Honestly, they really rushed the ending of S1, and I don't think they could really recover in S2 even if it took place in the modern day. Jared Harris was phenomenal though.

Putin doesn't have an end game. 91% of Ukrainians voted for independence 30 years ago. In 2014, one million protestors overthrew Putin's puppet who violently attacked them, killing hundreds. If Russia takes Kiev by force and kills their elected leaders, how long will Putin's new puppets last? How long until three million people take to the streets and hang them? How many Russian troops will have to permanently occupy the capital and other cities? Everyone under 35 have only known independence from Russia. How likely are any of them to fight for Putin against their own families? What possible end can Putin imagine here?
The longer this drags on the worse it will be for Putin. Stories like Snake Island resonate with the rest of the world.
Southeast Asian countries which are generally loath to support the United States or NATO are referring to Russia as an abusive ex-boyfriend.

Most of them are conscripts. So, no, they don't want to be there. Alcoholism and drug addiction remains a large problem in their armed forces.
