Anyone who has watched Purdue over last few years knows that if they get off to a good start at home, the visiting team is in deep trouble and may get blown out. With that in mind, I wonder why the Hawks didn't take several time outs early in the game to stop the momentum. They don't do you much good when you are down 20. Also, a good butt chewing was in order because of the lack of effort on the defensive glass.

Said the same thing when it was 7-2, 10-2, 12-2. Time out Fran. But he just waited till 17-2, game over. Not good effort on both ends of the court w/ poor close outs on the 3, no box outs on the rebounds, and Purdue was manning up shooters so no open 3’s in Iowa’s end. Game was essentially over from the get go. From the coaching to the effort of the players, it appeared everyone wasn’t ready to go.

I just don't understand Fran's use of timeouts. Why not call timeout with 10-2, then 17-2, etc.? We lose by 30+ and have four timeouts remaining at the end of the game. I swear he is the only coach that does this. I wish a reporter would ask him to explain this a little more. Sometimes I think he knows he will lose and he just leaves the players out there to try to figure it out on their own as a lesson. But what are you teaching them?

coaches know their teams. Honestly none of this mattered last night so why not just get it over with?

It really hurts giving up 18 points to a guy who looks like a 50 year old Y league player. We didn't defend, we were very slow on moving the ball and slow getting back in transition. Effort?

I thought the likelihood of Iowa winning that game was in the 10% range, so I'm not surprised by the loss. But it is very disappointing the way in which they were completely run out of the gym in the first few minutes.
Fran should have used at least 2 timeouts before it got to 17-2. I would have also sent Till in and told him to do nothing but defend, rebound and foul. And I mean go out and hard foul without making it an intentional. Slow the pace and make them shoot 1 and 1 from the line. They would still be unlikely to win but it could have kept it from being a debacle.

Purdue finished shooting 63% from the field, 56% from three,.. that wins games.

I think the game plan was probably not to run Purdue's "shooters" off the line . They are the worst shooting team in the conference.

The first one should've likely been used sooner, but the last four should've been traded to take time off the clock to end it sooner.

He should of called to and chewed ass after that 3 or 4 offensive rebound possession.

That possession was pretty much game over from there.

I have been wondering about the game plans recently. Obviously, there is a Plan A to defense a team, but when that does not work (like last night) it does not appear there is a Plan B in place. IMO

Really, Iowa only needed to win one against either Illinois or Purdue, and they got it against Illinois. Now, if they can beat Nebraska, then either Minnesota or Indiana on the road, they should be well positioned for the closing stretch

Let’s be honest, too much youth in the backcourt and not enough quality depth in the backcourt to win the Big Ten

The dude was 26.9% from 3 coming into the game. He shot 4-6. I think Iowa was fine letting him shoot threes.

You just don't win when a team shoots 20% above their season average from 3 on high volume. It happens, flush it and move on.

It's fun and interesting to talk about, but I'm too pragmatic to have thought they had any reasonable shot at the B1G title. Even in a crazy year like this.
I'd consider it relatively quite successful if they can go 11-9 and finish in the 5-6 range in the league.

Looks like the NCAA only allows each team 4 timeouts for the game 1 60 sec and 3 30 sec timeouts and they are only allowed to carry over 2 of the 30 sec timeout into the 2nd half which is why they refer to the use it or lose it timeout.

There are multiple TV timeouts so most coaches conserve their timeouts and wait for the TV timeouts most of the time

Fran probably should have pulled the trigger earlier but most coaches won't use 2 or 3 team timeouts in the 1st half.

A lot of coaches like to see their team work their way out of the funk they are in.

Yep, that was the equivalent of Pemsl, Tousaint, Evelyn and Cmac hitting 15 combined 3s in a game.

That's how bad of shooters the guys hitting those shots were.

Iowa would beat any team in the country by double digits if that ever happened.

Kind of a bad day to be poking fun at the guy. Say what you want but the guy is a baller, and he's played pretty well for Purdue.

He was inserted in the starting lineup after Haarms injured his hip. He has been playing quite well in the 4/5 games hitting 3's, rebounding, and floor play. Iowa sure could use him.

It’s part of the growing process. Iowa is ranked #17 & firmly sitting in the NCAA tournament as a 5-6 seed. You don’t call a timeout because you want to see how your guys will respond and who does what. It’s an opportunity to grow for him & the players & will help him better adjust to a run like that moving forward. If the team was 13-9 and more desperately needed a W he would’ve likely called one much sooner.

Agreed, 11-9 / 12-8 would be about what I’d expect based on what we’ve seen thus far. I’m really hoping they can pull out a 6 seed in the NCAA’s. One of the best shots to make a run IMO

If I’m coaching Iowa vs Purdue or Michigan St—especially these two—I might call timeout after the very first second chance opportunity those teams get. The number one priority versus any team, but especially those two, is limiting second chance opportunities. Call timeout, reinforce the importance, coach them up on matching physicality. And I don’t think coaches encourage good fouling enough. Connor is undersized in most lineups, playing 4 a lot. If I’m Fran I’m telling Connor to get a foul a game just being super aggressive boxing out. I think in this forum during Aaron White’s junior and senior year, during which it seemed like he was uninterested in crashing the offensive glass like he did the first two years, reward him for getting an offensive foul trying to tip dunk. Like you get an over the back call trying to get somebody on a poster—you get a prize.

I did this when I coached in SF high school. Had a kid who if he just aggressively boxed out would lead the league in rebounding. He had instinct and great hands so he did well even with bad habits. So we had a deal where if he got called for a foul boxing out on the defensive glass he got a Kit Kat. It became a rallying cry for the team. And that shit is fun.

And HORRIBLE rebounding. Iowa gave up so many offensive rebounds early in the game I couldn't keep count. Hell, they gave up three offensive rebounds on multiple possessions.

Yep, the lack of effort had me ready to turn it off 2 minutes in :(.

Also is there any kind of stat on fast break conversion %? Is it just me or is this team pretty bad at finishing them? Or just scoring when they're at the basket(other than luka obviously)

yeah, they do seem to have trouble finishing at the rim on breakouts. Weiskamp and CJF have collected a few charges on plays like that this year.

EDIT: There was a lousy charge call given to Purdue's balding old man guy. He flopped like a fish but got the call. Still, Iowa should be less out of control going to the basket.

and stuffed like a turkey too many times :(

Also JT seems to just throw anything up when he gets within a few ft of the basket. Never seen so many "low % shots" that close to the basket.

It may have mattered. Calling timeouts in middle of runs is the smart play. Waiting after a 15 point run does nothing. Purdue had momentum and confidence at that point. Fran is the only coach in the country that doesn’t believe TO’s can stop runs.

On the play were JW hit the top of the backboard on his shot attempt he complained that his arm was hit. Anyone see if it was? With all the whining Weezy was doing throughout the game I just figured it was just a horrible shot.

I get your point, but doubt it would matter.
He could have called a TO a minute into the game, but that wouldn't have been enough to stop the 90+ they score after our first TO :). Also he doesn't have infinite TOs....
