Petras tried to game the system, being handed a starter gig and serious some serious weapons at skill positions (a rarity at Iowa) for three years at a Big 10 school without having to compete for it. He graduated two years ago, then took a year off while keeping his football scholarship at Iowa because the Hawks landed a better QB from the portal. A year after graduating then sitting out a year, Petras was given yet another year of eligibility, his 6th, to play another season. Since Cade was already promised the starting position at Iowa, he decided transfer to a lower level school in Utah State, where he assumed he'd be handed the starting job the way it was handed to him at Iowa. After all, he was entering the Mountain West with 3 years of Big 10 starting experience.

Doh, it turns out, Utah State wasn't sold, as they just signed their second grad transfer portal QB. The difference is, this guy can actually play. Utah's QB is transferring in to take the starter job from Petras. For the Utes, the guy threw for 2,000 yards, 17 touchdowns, a 60% completion percentage...and he ran for 400 yards.

Petras seems like a nice guy who benefitted from privileges most would never dream of (like starting ever game year after year despite ranking last in the conference in every major stat). His luck appears to have run out at Utah State. Best of luck to the guy. Many believe he will go into coaching so perhaps being a backup might be helpful to his career prospects.

Tried to "game the system?" Seems to me the system was there to be used. Funny how for some it is viewed so differently.

I assume you think Petras can't beat out another QB with a better line to block and give him more time to find a open receiver. Not going to give you a like here until that plays out. So many different scenarios that can happen.
Amazing how negative people hang onto negative opinions in new situations. Going to have to wait for that to play out in my opinion. If nothing changes, then I will give you a like.

Game the system? Gaming is what Lawyers do in the judicial system, not nice young men starting out.

It will be fun to check back on this next year…you are the rube of message boards!

I agree here. How would Petras have done if he had a little time back there. He could throw a good ball on occasion. He was not a good fit for sub par oline. Needed some mobility. And accuracy. And pocket awareness.

Says one of the biggest dumb asses on these boards.

What I thought would happen is that Petras was going to "hang out for a year", hope that Cade McNamara had a great year on his way to the NFL, and be welcomed back by Kirk with open arms for that 6th year. It would be interesting to see what SP can do with a competent offensive line and receivers that can get open.

As we've discussed here numerous times, Petras NEVER had the option of playing again at Iowa once he took the medical year off......

For all the shit he took here he was a good team mate and Hawk. Frankly had we been better up front he'd have had a much better, and healthier career. No Iowa fan should have an anamosity toward SP.......
Very true, unfortunately they view it as their right to come on here and bitch and complain about activities they would not have the abilities to dream about. I guess that makes them feel better, so we have to put up with it, instead of respecting the athletes for their hard work and effort.

This is pretty stupid, even for you.

Petras was not a good QB for us. But to say he "gamed the system" or exploited his situation at Iowa is just dumb. He was given the reins by his coaches, and he did the best he could. He lacked accuracy, lacked mobility, got rattled in the pocket too easily. That said, he showed good leadership qualities and seems like a quality young man who handled a tough situation with a lot of poise and grace IMO.

You celebrating the fact that he might not get to play at Utah St. is frankly just weird and kind of gross.

Petras like almost every QB that leaves this system will be better than at Iowa! I watched his game film in HS and he could really spin the ball. His game fell apart at Iowa, and like most QBs that come to Iowa it's generally coaching that has been the biggest issue with our starting qbs. IMO

You seem bitter, OP. Regale us again with your Sam Laporta predictions.
The OP sounds like a jock sniffer who has probably never even thrown a football let alone put on the pads and played in a real game. He was probably captain of the debate team though. He uses this forum to practice his debate “skills” perhaps (he just wants to argue, pretty obvious).

KF really seemed to like Petras. Played him w/o subbing when Petras was really struggling. Maybe KF could do Spencer a good and try to get that Utes QB to transfer to Iowa, thus saving SP's position and helping himself at the same time. ; )

Nate told us there was never any QB development once at Iowa. None. That is why he went with Tony the private QB coach as did Petras and also Lainez I think.
And then KOK retires and there is not any QB coach at all!
petras suffered a severe throwing shoulder injury in the 2021 Wisconsin game as I recall and that was the start of the slide. He missed a few games while Padilla was then thrown to the wolves with a turnstile O-line. that didn’t work out too well so Petras still went in again and gave his best for the team.
the OP is a real dbag for sure. he contributes nothing positive here it seems…why dwell on the past…must have a pretty sad life yet he thinks he knows it all. What has he done for the team? Big NIL contributor? Doubt it.
what a joke. The sentiment here re the OP says it all.
does the op know the Utah coach? Doubt it. just spewing made up bs.
I support all current and former players for Iowa…they are the ones on the battle field.

Except he almost never replies to anything, just refers to himself in third person in an initial post but spells his own username wrong. Then barfs on the page never to return again. Such a weird cat.

Who says Petras won't earn the starting job? He has skills that were never displayed in our shit offense. If he's healthy, shoulder and all, he'll compete well and have a chance to play a lot. Capable of putting up good numbers at that school and against that competition.

Petras will be successful in life beyond football. That is assuming football is not his career choice.

He sounded as coach ready as any player I can recall. He fielded tough questions and continued to say great things about Iowa football. I wish him only the best.

There is only one common element with all of these failed Iowa QB's over the last 7 years, and that's been the Iowa coaching staff.

That Utah transfer qb is not a good player. I will predict right now that Petra’s will be the starter. Maybe not to begin the year but he will replace the guy eventually

So, Petras nailed your daughter?

Like it or not, he was the best option in the the roster. He struggled, but any QB would have with his line and wr corps.

Give it a rest, he's gone.
The revisionist history on Petras is comical. It's like looking back at Todd Lickliter and saying "ya know, he really wasn't that bad."

Petras cannot blame his woes on having terrible lines and WR corps. You forget Petras took snaps for two years from the Remington Award winning center, who is now an all pro offensive linemen. He threw passes to playmaking WRs Smith-Marsette and Charlie Jones...both of whom are Iowa's only two NFL caliber WRs in the past decade. His TE was Sam LaPorta, in the league, and his RB was Goodson, in the league. If you take off your revisionist goggles, Petras was gifted a TON of firepower on offense and simply failed to do his part.

While Petras was not coached up at all under Brian Ferentz, his family had the means to hire a private QBs coach for him and he still struggled mightily with accuracy and awareness.
