I know most of you dislike Willie, BUT, on his show this morning he mentioned that Terry Brands put in for the NC job.

Interesting if true. Ready for new warmer nearing-retirement scenery with Nelson apparently done now? More money? Internal tensions with Tom? Or just wanted to give Willie and the Cesspool something to talk about. Regardless, I'm sure we can turn this in to a political thread as well.

There has to be a lot of pressure to win at Iowa. He could have an occasional top 5 or 10 finish at UNC and be viewed as successful. At Iowa finishing second is considered sub par and a failed season. It would probably be more enjoyable in that respect.

Is the plan to have Spencer Lee assistant working with Tom for a few years before taking over the helm? Would hate to see Terry go, he is a great asset in recruiting and training but also think he would be very successful as head coach at one of the top wrestling schools.

Spencer has repeatedly said that Terry was one of the primary motivators for him to come to Iowa. What if he follows Terry?
Would probably require Terry's new spot to have pockets deep enough, but certainly possible.

When many of us hoped for some new faces on the staff, not sure too many expected Terry to be looking.
Do you think he is really looking hard or he just thought the the UNC job was a potential gold mine? I can see it having the impact of a PSU type program. Close to PA. A highly coveted destination for many people.

Let's face it, there are more people moving into NC than Iowa or Illinois or Oklahoma. North Carolina is kind of sexy right now in terms of those migrating to warmer climates and young people looking to start careers etc....

How desirable do y'all think Terry is as a head coaching candidate?
That is a good question.

Another good question would be what schools would he be a good fit for as a head coach. None of the Ivy's - that is for sure. He seems like a midwestern, blue collar type of guy and that is where he will be best suited I think. Oklahoma may have been a good place for him. An SDSU or NDSU maybe a good fit. I am not sure he would be highly sought after in the east coast. Just my thoughts.

There aren't many programs that could turn down Terry Brands for a better option. Even if it doesn't go right, I think you'd have to give it a shot.

Just my opinion, but given that Spencer's whole family moved to Iowa and put down roots, I think he staying and will become Iowa's next head coach. His knowledge of wrestling in general, particularly mat wrestling and par terre, is world class and unique in this country. Nobody is going to let him get away.

I think, much like Gable, he will be a better coach than wrestler. And, that's saying something.

The radio silence on the topic leads me to believe things are happening.

Not very as a head coach. Pick of the litter as an assistant.
I thought Terry did well at Tennessee Chattanooga while he was Head Coach there.

Maybe he feels he let Iowa down somewhat after his own son got caught up in the gambling probe.

Maybe he's hearing about 'bad optics' from within the Iowa Athletic Department.

Maybe he's looking for a face saving graceful exit before Iowa's new Athletic Director ratchets up the pressure in an attempt to make a statement on how Iowa is taking actions and moving forward.

Lots of maybe's could be in play.

Maybe he bleeds black and gold enough to know that the biggest contribution he can make to the resurgence of the Iowa wrestling program is to make room for a upper weight coach who can strengthen those weights?

I would lean more towards somebody has to be the fall guy for nearly half the team getting suspended by the NCAA. Including his own son. That’s not insignificant.

I can't see Tom letting his brother take the fall for something like that, unless Terry was betting along with them or encouraging it. I see Tom as the kind who takes responsibility for anything that happens under his watch and throws NO ONE under the bus.

I agree. But I can also see Terry testing the waters elsewhere so he lands softly and can take the fall for Tom.

Someone has prolly already mentioned it, but isn’t Tony Ramos still there? Not sure why I seem to remember an interview with Ramos where he talks about being right with Terry… as in within the past few years? I could be remembering things incorrectly tho… Been a ton of wrestling info that’s gone through my cranium these last few years… an almost maddening amount and it’s hard to keep track of sometimes lol..

Tony is/will be on staff with Koll. Koll actually tried to hire him on at Stanford.

Tony has never had a problem with Terry. Very specifically Tom - but he has said that they've since made up.

Right on, thank you for clarifying.

Man, I bet that whole situation was a nightmare from a coach’s perspective. Seems like one of those situations where no matter the outcome, you have to worry about someone who is an important representative of the program’s history itself would go home angry. I hate those situations and do not envy the coaches out there who have to facilitate that sort of thing.

There's a lot of maybes in this thread.

I'll add a maybe.

Maybe Nelson was making bets under an account Terry or his mom set up for him??

Would be pretty stupid but we are all humans and make stupid decisions almost on the daily.
