Usually I’d chalk his nuttiness up to attempts to distract, but he’s making much worse the very thing he’d want to distract from. He’s self-sabotaging himself.

This lead me to believe he’s rapidly declining but this time there are no guardrails and the adults are definitely not in the room.

I think you're pretty spot on. I think it's a combination of things. I think he expected Canada to bow down, not stand up and fight back. I think he's losing his mind, and I also think he likely had these idiotic ideas during his first term but was surrounded by folks that at least knew how to keep him somewhat under control.

Now he's surrounded by even bigger idiots that won't tell him no. He's making impulsive decisions and just ****ing winging it right now. There won't be anyone to take the keys from him. Elon may try and grab the steering wheel a bit even though I still feel like Elon is in his ear about a lot of this shit. Maybe not the tariffs but definitely about the Russia/Ukraine situation. And attempting to get some more government contracts to his companies.

I think most financial analysts would say we ended the Biden presidency eerily close to a stock market correction, and most of them would have agreed it was bound to happen within the next 1-2 years. So instead of it happening to Trump mid-term, he took the reigns and control and is helping to flush it out now, early in his presidency.

It's not how you start, it's how you finish. I think he'd rather have more control over when it happens so he's stimulating things so it happens now. If might take a year to flush out, but we'll be smooth sailing in year 3 and 4 of the Trump era.
