Trump on grocery prices: "It's hard to bring things down once they're up."

I'm not the person who took him at his word on this. I'm the person who was laughing at his claims he was going to bring down prices "fast," and now four months later we're getting a very different story. This was all incredibly predictable.

Depends on how you heard him,.. Prices, in general, never come down, and the negative inflation required to actually make that happen would be very bad for the economy as a whole,.. But one way to make higher prices feel acceptable is to put more money in people pockets via wage growth... A bottle of domestic beer used to be $1 whereas now it's more like $5, but it actually feels less expensive to me now than it did back in the day...

Talk about mental gymnastics.

You say spin, i say hes a LIAR.
I lean more towards spin personally. He usually has always delivered massive word salads that deliver just enough kernels of accurate information that his followers could latch onto those as to what he actually meant. See rifler’s last few posts.

So trump lies to get elected and people call him out. maga bitching about prices for 4 years tells us people voted for trump for prices to come down (supposedly) since he told us they would. Now the truth comes out and maga still defends that fat orange twat. You people are delusional. I figured the cult would’ve slowed a bit post election. But nope full steam ahead on the dumb ****ness.

So once again we libs were right that Republicans like Iowa's MMM were running on a BS narrative, that Biden and Democrats caused prices to rise, that Republicans will never ever attempt to fix, in order to help everyday Americans, and this BS was accepted as fact. It's always so easy to point this out but right wingers refuse to acknowledge it. We all KNEW Trump wasn't going to lower costs...because he can't.
You are correct, no one can lower prices on groceries outside of a few items. The goal is to stop or drastically lower the price increases that the democrats created by spending 1.5 trillion dollars on pet projects and Trump will lower energy prices which have an effect on prices of everything.

From the transcript of Trump's interview with Time magazine:

If the prices of groceries don't come down, will your presidency be a failure?

"I don't think so. Look, they got them up. I'd like to bring them down. It's hard to bring things down once they're up. You know, it's very hard. But I think that they will. I think that energy is going to bring them down. I think a better supply chain is going to bring them down. You know, the supply chain is still broken. It's broken. You see it. You go out to the docks and you see all these containers. And I own property in California, in Palos Verdes. They're very nice. And I passed the docks, and I've been doing it for 20 years. I've never seen anything like it. You know, for 17 years, I saw containers and, you know, they'd come off and they'd be taken away—big areas, you know, you know, in that area, you know, where they have the big, the big ships coming in—big, the port. And I'd see this for years as I was out there inspecting property and things, because they own a lot in California. And I look down and I see containers that are, that are 12, 13, 14 containers. You wouldn't believe they can hold each other. It's like crazy. No, the supply chain is is broken. I think a very bad thing is this, what they're doing with the cars. I think they lost also because of cars. You know, there are a lot of reasons, but the car mandate is a disaster. The electric, the EV mandate."
Just one more lie the maga cult was a dumb enough to buy into. Can you spell " let's build a wall and Mexico will pay for it?" Bone spurs is already going back on his promises. Did anyone think he would do differently? The cult members are such dupes it's laughable.

Promises made, promises kept, for the oligarchs.

How exactly will he lower energy prices?

Let the backpedaling begin.
Just curious when he said he would make eggs cheaper? Gas, sure, because he knows by increasing supply it can go down.

The current administration simply took credit for prices not going up as much as they were, but if you can have policies and actions that limit inflation (which is there every year) then that's a win

He won't. It was just one more lie he was willing to sell to the cult members to get their vote. And they're morons enough to believe it. It all comes back to land on the dupes that voted for him because they believed his outlandush lies, again. His failed presidency will rest on the morons that elected him.

In fairness, as a general matter, we've had what, like 2 periods of deflation in the last 100 years? (And neither of them were good.)

Now of course, when you get to the level of individual components of the economy (eg, food prices or more specifically, say, "eggs"), some go up and down. (Indeed, I read an interesting piece the other day about the "Waller Rule" - a focus on individual economic subcomponent prices rather than broad-based indices - that Fed governors and observers may be looking at more when considering interest rate decisions.) Aside from dietary changes affecting things like demand, my wild guess is that distribution costs may be as big a driver of food prices as production costs are. Those can be influenced by everything from merger policy, to tax policy, to energy policy, to trade policy, and beyond. Plenty of levers to try to pull.

I don’t know about eggs alone. But he absolutely said he would make groceries cheaper. Hell in the quote I provided he said he would make the price of everything come down fast.

I don’t know why Trump is immune to accountability, but he sure as hell seems to be given how many morons are accepting his hard pivot away from his campaign promises.

I'm guessing a lot of people heard things like this and took him for his word.

Quote of relevance to groceries and thus eggs: "So when I win, I will immediately bring prices down." -Donald Trump (August 16, 2024)

Starts at :50

Your second sentence is a lie. I feel sorry for you.

Republicans constantly campaigned on the issue of high food prices and people believed they would lower them, EVEN THOUGH WE TOLD YOU THEY WOULDN'T. Now they will do what we said they would do AHEAD OF TIME. But none of that mattered to you because it was democrats saying it. We're constantly correct, ahead of time, and you guys ignore it. Funny and sad.
