Tyler Cook entering NBA Draft and hiring an agent

I think it’s a safe assumption that if they put together one of these Instagram edited things, they’re gone gone, whether they go to the NBA or not.
I just see a lot of players declaring but then there is the side note that they could return.

What's the new rule? If they don't get drafted they can return to college?

Nevertheless, with Cook, I have seen it reported several times that he is gone regardless.

He's hiring an agent and thus is ineligible to compete in the NCAA again.

Good luck to Tyler. Go get paid.

I believe the rule is if they get invited to the NBA Combine and then don't get drafted, they can still return to school even if they've hired an agent. However, if they stay in the draft even after NOT getting a combine invite, they're done with college. Basically no combine invite is the NBA telling you to go back to school.

When they hire an agent, it's bye-bye. Simple as that.
I don't think it will apply to Cook - he seems ready to move on regardless - but players can be with an agent during the NBA Draft process and still return to school now under the new rules.

Agent representation for college students
College basketball players can be represented by an agent beginning after any basketball season if they request an evaluation from the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee.

This rule change is effective immediately.

Agents can pay for expenses
Agents can pay for meals and transportation for players and their families if the expenses are related to the agent selection process. Also, the student cannot miss class, and the money must be spent where the student lives or attends school. Additionally, once an agreement is signed with an agent, high school and college student-athletes and their families can have meals, transportation and lodging paid for by the agent if those expenses are associated with meetings with the agent or a pro team.

Because the Uniform Athlete Agents Act, Revised Uniform Agents Act and relevant state laws regulate expenses provided by agents before a contract is signed, those rule changes are effective immediately after those laws are changed. The changes allowing agents to provide expenses to student-athletes and prospects after a contract is signed are effective immediately.

Agent agreements
All agreements between agents and high school or college student-athletes must be:

    • In writing.
    • Terminated when the student enrolls in or returns to college.
    • Disclosed to the NCAA (for high school students) or the school (for students already in college).
This change is effective immediately.

Agent certification
To work with a high school or college athlete, agents must be certified by an NCAA program with standards for behavior and consequences for violations. Family members of the high school recruit or college athlete or those who act solely on behalf of a professional sports team aren’t required to be certified.

The deadline for agents to become certified is undetermined but will not be later than Aug. 1, 2020. Until then, NBPA-certified agents will be considered NCAA certified.

Making informed decisions
Since 2016, college athletes who are interested in going pro have been able to declare for the draft and attend the NBA combine but have been required to withdraw no more than 10 days after the combine to stay eligible. Now, students who wish to enter the draft also must request an evaluation from the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee, which will provide valuable information to assist student-athletes in making the decision to turn pro or stay in school.

This rule change is effective immediately.

NBA draft flexibility
College basketball players who request an Undergraduate Advisory Committee evaluation, participate in the NBA combine and aren’t drafted can return to school as long as they notify their athletics director of their intent by 5 p.m. the Monday after the draft.

This change is effective if/when the NBA and NBPA make an expected rule change, which would make undrafted student-athletes who return to college after the draft ineligible for the NBA until the end of the next college basketball season.

I assume Cook hasn’t received a combine invite?

thanks for clarifying the agent rule.

thanks Blair.

there are several players out there declaring and hiring an agent & then the reporter talks to the head coach and the head coach says "well, he may be back; we'll see."

one example is Amir Coffey, Minnesota. he declared, hired an agent, but I bet he returns to school based on what his head coach and others are saying

Huh, TIL. Thanks, Blair.

I think it's good for all sides. He had a solid career and his big dunks were fun. On the flip side, look at his advanced stats. WS/40 and PER are well below average and not in the top 3-4 on the team. His limitations on defense, turnovers and shooting range diminished his power game.

In my opinion, we'll be a better team next year with a rotation of Garza, Kriener, Nunge and Pemsl. PMac can play the 4 against smaller lineups too.

It sure beats this season when we had to go to Riley Till in a couple of games when either Cook or Garza got in early foul trouble and we only had 3 legitimate post players.

Cook was the best defensive big on the team this season and it’s not even close. I’m hopeful that Nunge can be an impact defender, but I am very worried that Iowa’s defense will return to 2017-2018 levels without Cook.

TC wasn’t the sole difference in a 100 spot improvement in team defense.

In my opinion, the defense will improve again next year, and the offense will good enough to mask most of its shortcomings.

Good luck to Tyler. It was a blast watching him play for the Hawks. He’ll have to change his game and mindset a bit, but definitely has the potential to find a role in the league.

You’re right- Wieskamp and Connor were important parts of the improved defense simply by adding a couple guards/wings that were adequate defensively, rather than having to play Pemsl or Nunge on the perimeter. Cook’s versatility and ability to switch onto opposing guards was a big part of Iowa’s success defensively this year though.

No doubt. I think Pemsl will actually surprise a bit on defense, especially if he’s kept his weight down.

More than his defense, I bet the Hawks will miss TC’s rebounding. It wasn’t as good as it could have been given his athleticism, but replacing 7.6 boards per game will be no easy task. Going to have to be a team effort

At the very least Pemsl will provide toughness and decent scoring/rebounding off the bench. Luckily Iowa has a guard/forward who is a fantastic rebounder in Wieskamp. Garza was an awesome rebounder his freshman season too before regressing significantly this past season. Hopefully with a full offseason he can return to where he was as a freshman as far as rebounding goes.

It's gonna suck without Tyler and Joe next year. Hope we can replace their production.

Go Hawks.

It actually was pretty close. Luka is a horrible defender but Kriener's defensive box per minute is comparable to Cook's.

Pemsl also has a better career DBPM than Cook so that should help. Plus you add the length of Nunge.

Cook hustled but his defense was still mediocre.

I worry more about losing Baer (DBPM twice as good as Cook).

Baer will be a bigger loss than Cook defensively.

Overall it’s going to really hurt this team without NB next year. I think people really underestimate his all around game.

Repeating myself from yesterday (its probably not early onset but with me....), but if, and its a big one, if the Big C has not lost his hops and lateral quickness, he is going to be a very good 4 on next season's Hawks.

Cordell is a good interior defender. Like Jack on the 17-18 Hawks the coaches had Cordell playing far too many minutes at the 3, trying to guard much quicker players.

Jack has a nice upside but Cordell has great inside moves. If he's added the 15 footer, from both the line and roaming around an arc defined by the line, his offensive game is great. Kid's tough and played a much smarter game than TC. In the end, a two point layup counts for the same 2 points as a thunder dunk.

I have no idea if Iowa will be better with or without him next year.....but I do worry that there is absolutely no one on next year's roster that can bring the skill set that he brought. Therefore, that worries me....especially with the style that Fran wants to play.

Therefore, in my eyes, this team just went from a top 4 B1G team to a bubble team.
