Tyson v. Paul fight

I don't care how old he is, Mike Tyson is still former heavyweight champ and one of the hardest, fastest hitters of all time. Paul is an internet personality who has a passion for boxing that has won a few exhibition matches. Tyson is going to freaking break him, and it's not going to be pretty. I can't wait.

Tyson was gassed in his scripted exhibition against Roy Jones Jr. He got knocked out and threw in the towel against journeymen in his last two professional fights. That was 20 years ago.

It’s not 1987. Mike is in great shape for his age, but he’s nowhere near being a competitive heavyweight boxer.

I saw it differently. I saw Tyson deliberately taking his foot off the gas against Jones, and he could have easily KO'd him if he wanted to. In any event, he looks to be in really good shape for this fight. How will it play out tonight? I cannot wait to see!

He could have KO’d him for sure. Jones was in worse shape and Tyson didn’t go for the head.

I still saw Tyson breathing heavy and lumbering in a way I hadn’t before.

This. Good lord, Tyson could have done a lot of damage. Jones was slow and doughy. It must really suck to take your foot off the gas when every instinct you have is to hit those open spots.

I watched several of Paul's fights today. Woof. Tyson should crush him, but Vegas numbers definitely aren't indicating that. Not sure what is in it for Tyson except for a payday. If Paul wins, he beat an old guy. I guess he still has his internet personality whatever the fook.

I don't think this goes long enough - in either direction - for anyone to get tired.

Great job by that young lady keeping her head about her.

This is a question he hates and he is sick of. Because he is as big a student of boxing as any fighter ever. Without his demons, he would have had a long wonderful career as a analyst, because he knows more about boxing than 99% of boxing media.

Because of that, he knows his legacy is what Tom and I said. He knows he isn't the best ever, or close to it. He knows he doesn't have a proper legacy of an all time great. He knows maybe he could have, or maybe he knows deep down that he never had it. But its's a very unusual situation for the subject of evaluation to be basically a historian himself and have a brutally frank assessment of his shortcomings.

Counterpoint - he owns a tiger.

Could be having tragically lost his daughter as well being part of it. He has studied philosophy and I find his answer kind of haunting considering his daughter.

Not only did he not go for the head, he was soft on his body shots. A few combo body shots and those hands come down leaving his head exposed, it would have been good night for Jones, especially with the shape he was in.

Good thing that he's not fighting a competitive heavyweight boxer. He's fighting a YouTube influencer. Tyson's been a boxer for what, 45 years? Paul picked it up a few years ago because he thought it looked cool, and he's fought some hobos and wrestlers.

Tyson in 2, and he's gonna mess Jake up.

Yes indeed.

The guy is a true enigma and contradiction. He is a more thoughtful and introspective guy than 95% of celebrities, with a remarkable ability to look at himself. And...he's also a vicious and cruel and chaotic person.

Tyson will run out of gas in the 2nd after that he'll stumble around, get semi knocked down/fall until the fight is stopped in the 4th. I hate Jake Paul and would love to see Tysin KO him but Mikes a 58 year old with frail lower legs, and a very damaged body and brain. He's not beating a strong in shape 28 year old unless he catches him in the first 90 seconds.

The Shavers knockdown of Holmes might be the hardest punch I have ever seen a guy recover from and win a fight.

Yep. Pretty incredible.

I heard an interview with Holmes years ago talking about that fight and that punch. He said that when he came to his senses after the punch, he told himself "just stay down...don't try to get up from that", but then he realized that he was already standing up and the ref was counting his 8 count. He had gotten up on instinct in the couple of seconds when the punch had separated his consciousness from his body LOL. He said that's the only reason he continued because he was basically unconscious when he climbed to his feet.

Anyone who hasn't seen it should watch the Holmes Shavers highlights.

I just watched the Holmes-Tyson highlights again. I mean, I think Holmes was beginning to have something there. He was diminished, but he wasn't totally washed. It's not impossible that fight goes differently if he survives the knockdowns and gets a gassed Tyson next round. But Tyson did a great job finishing a guy with legendary recuperative powers. Really good win.

He has quit before.

Exactly. Literally nothing about Tyson, even in his prime, indicates blaze of glory, courage, overcoming adversity, etc is part of his makeup.

He is absolutely a front runner, and quit in fights that he had much more on the line on than this. The guy never lost a decision...when the going is against him, he will find a way out.

There's a first time for everything, maybe he's found a different place in himself, but if he really does "blaze of glory" this, it will be far different than anything he's shown before.

Wow. I had never seen that punch from Shavers. Dude hit like a truck apparently.

Holmes Shavers II became a war. Holmes was cutting him to pieces and Shavers had to do something. Shavers had the shoulder in and whole body behind that right hand. Holmes hit the mat like a sack of potatoes and that is when the real fight started.

Classic fight.
