I've been seeing that Taxi unions are protesting Uber. How does Uber get away with less fees and licences required than what a taxi service uses?

IIRC do taxis need medallions and special license from like the city or something like that?

I had my hotel call a cab for me in Houston this morning. They assured me it would be no more than 10 min. 25 min later I ordered an uber. Wait time was 6 min. Cab never showed.

Price was 30ish bucks to hobby. Cab ride from hobby to my hotel was in the 50s. Uber wins accross the board

Cabs and Ubers will both have to meet state and
city regulations. From that point it will be a level
playing field. However, Uber has a more efficient
operation and service. This is what scares the
cab business. Also Uber plans to use woman
drivers as much as possible.

What did the cab company say when you called to cancel after the Uber showed? Were they apologetic at least?

Just curious?
