Uhl/Wagner/Baer

So important as the season rolls on. As they get better/more comfortable, everyone gets a blow and more minutes.

The thing is when you watch them, They get it, They all know their roles and they all exude confidence. I am impressed with how quickly Wagner has picked up things, He is just playing and you can tell he isn't having to think of what he is supposed to do or where he is supposed to be, He knows. We wondered before the season really got going which freshman were going to grasp it and have the light go on, Wagner is there IMO.

Today we had the Baer Minimum....he was solid of course.

Uhl and Wagner looked great. Wagner is the type of quick defender in post that we never have, and how we have.

There seems to be a lot of that lately. We never have shooters all over the court, now we do. We never have a massive athlete like Cook commit, now we do. I like this new trend to have things.

Uhl was a major question mark coming into the season. Had my doubts but no longer. Dom is getting better almost every game. His shot is u-g-l-y but it drops and that's all that matters. The Bulldog Baer is a baller. Knows what to do. Wags is an instinctive athlete and played well today. All three look like they belong and know they belong on the court. The result all three kids play under control and good things result.

I think Wagner is a bulldog. A scrapper and gifted athlete.

Baer is a hustler/shooter who is always in your face. Great presence.

Uhl shows that he could be really special. As he learns the game and instincts kick in, he could be a Uthoff. No crap. Not the same, but as effective.

The development of our bench has just been phenomenal. These 3 guys in particular bring the energy each time on the court. Love to watch them get better and contribute to the team.

You are looking at 3 future starters... Assuming they do not get beaten out. Love our depth!

These 3 Hawks have been solid players during this 7 game winning streak. They played better than that today. They played fluid, with good quickness.

NOW, imagine Baer, Wagner & Uhl with each having another 10-20 pounds of muscle on them next year. Sweet!

I want to see more Williams. He looked solid earlier in the week. And we need him with more big game experience. Tough with 2 senior PGs who deserve the minutes. Still, a lot of season left. I imagine/hope he will get it. Fleming too.

On Iowa!

Wagner really impressed me today. Hard to describe his game. He is an explosive jumper and creative around the hoop. If we need a rebound, he seems to get it. He is just quicker to the ball than anyone else.

These three are why I wouldn't be surprised if Iowa is even better next year...and...Jok...and all the others yet to be seen or used much.

Next year's team, the small lineup, were in the game a long time in the second half...and pushed Mich back...and recreated a nice lead.

Odds against it? Sure...but if Iowa is better would anyone be totally stunned by it?

Just wondering how much better Iowa could be right now if Dale Jones was also playing. Jones seem to be coming on quite well when he went down with his season ending injury. A deep bench that can create difficult matchups can go far in the NCAA tournament. Still, glad to see Uhl, Baer, and Wagner grow as the season wears on.

As much as he was the popular whipping boy for 3 years, finding a capable replacement for MG is going to be a huge part of how good next years team can be IMO.

Yes I would be amazed. I do think we will be much better then I thought before league play started.

The roster really looks quick a foot...much more so than I can recall in many, many years...Uhl, Wagner...very quick...long.

I honestly don't recall Jones that much, not have watched a whole lot of the games he was in prior to his injury. If he is as good as many say and can heal up...very nice addition as well.

As has been said thousands of times...MG is playing great and is much "better" with players who can shoot. And...he doesn't seem to feel the need to score, thus forcing shots and drives that he is unable to make on a regular basis.

He's not going to be as skilled as Jarrod but he's more athletic and a good deal quicker off the dribble.

I expect next year were going to see allot more of his game attacking the basket off the dribble.

Yes.

You're not going to be better with a bunch of new ballhandlers and bunch of guys who haven't developed chemistry.

We might end up pretty good by the end of the year.

If Bulldog Baer's shot remains reliable or improves I could see him as a career 6th man type that comes in and creates havoc on D and hits shots on a tired opponent. He could be a Jok or Ute type shooter than can never be left which really opens up the court for some of the potentially good scorers that we may have.

Exactly.

Williams, Moss, Hutton And Fleming are going to be good but there will be a significant learning curve.

There always is unless you're a lottery pick type.

Baer is scrappy...with good smarts...skills...and also seems pretty fearless. His minutes are increasing, which is good to see.

A career sixth man? Nice to have a good guy come off the bench who has the psyche to do it and confidence.

That goes for any PG.

Spacing is key in basketball, period.

Today, against Michigan, Uhl, Baer, and Wagner gave
the Hawkeyes 51 minutes and 22 points. Coach Beilein
of Michigan said that Iowa's bench play was the difference
today.

Wagner us growing each time he steps in to the court. Can't say enough about Baer. But, damn if Wagner leta it all hang out just to tip a rebound or shot. Very impressed. Last year we saw guys provide a lot of empty minutes off the bench; this year is a total 180. Guys are coming off the bench and doing anything to contribute.

I'm not sure Baer will ever have the skills to be the focal point of an offense, but he already a very good #3 or 4 guy who knows his role, keeps the ball moving, and punishes the defense for helping off him.

Having several guys who can really shoot makes a huge difference. Uthoff and Jok can hit shots that aren't guardable and Uhl is starting to get there.

Ellingson had 2 minutes...he will get less and less, it seems, in minutes that matter.

In terms of next year...well, we got a good glimpse today:

Jok 28

Uhl 20

Baer 20

Wagner 11

And this in a game where "next year's players" played a major roll in stretching out a lead that had disappeared in the second half.

Many of next year's players will be pretty hardened at the start of the season...integral...already.

Yeah, i hate to bust on the kid, but i have always said i just don't think he is D1 material. Honestly, how is he different than some of the kids on Wartburg's or Upper Iowa's roster?

What does he bring? If he is just not crazy deadly (which he is FAR from) from 3 point range, then answer is absolutely nothing.

I think he gets phased out soon. Might be the scholarship that opens up. I just think this is the wrong level of competition for him.

I know, bash me, and I'm sorry. Just one man's opinion I guess, and that is all it is. He would be a good player for Grinnell and that style of basketball I think.

Yeah...that's a pretty tall order. We had four turnovers today against a very, very athletic team. That's what we are going to miss...Gesell and Sapp. Man, we are tight with the ball in big games.

Hawks do have a really good three guard rotation with the starters. Its pretty obvious that we are looking to keep 2 of Jok Mike and AC on the floor at all times. Smart move since they are much better than any other option.

My guess is Andrew jumps Brady during the season and definitely next year. Of course Brady hasn't been bad in his role just not independently productive.
