Under preforming again

The guy literally said “keep fighting for 6-10.” The truth was they NEVER have been fighting for 6-10.

As far as top 5 goes, it isn’t the primary goal, but it would literally make every single school but PSU and Iowa elated if they never finished outside of it…
(Checks Hawks hoodie) Well, we’re Iowa, so there’s that.

It’s not our fault that you competed for such a s****y team.

To some fans just finishing 2nd-4th and getting a trophy is fine because they are so conditioned to it. Meanwhile the PSU train is going to dismantle all of Gable's records. And it is definitely Tom Brands' fault to a degree.
Lmfao. How exactly was Tom Brands supposed to stop it? Carl was always a better recruiter going back to even ISU. As soon as he landed at PSU he was given every resource possible to become a juggernaut.

I am fine with every Iowa fan wanting more than what Iowa has done the last 12 years. However, comparing them to PSU under Sanderson is an exercise in stupidity..

Depends when you’re comparing to and how you think about injuries.

If you compare to our seeds coming in and think all injuries are just random freak accidents that coaches have zero control over, then we’re not underperforming.

But if you compare to expectations one month ago or more (or to traditional expectations for the program) and you believe coaches can have an impact on limiting injury severity and frequency, then we are WAY WAY WAY underperforming.
I've questioned the injuries past few years myself. Definitely felt like there was "over training" or something going on. Don 't feel that way this year. Teemer's hammy injury early season was brutal, and even when he came back, I didn't feel confident the rest of the season would go how he wanted it to. Shoulder injury threw up another hurdle. Parco injury was something that can happen to anyone unfortunately. Years past, it's been frustrating to see some of our wrestlers just "look dead" come tourney time. This year sees to be more of a bad luck/we can't have nice things type of deal imho. Sucks to see Teemer and Parco end their careers this way.

Fair enough. But it’s way easier to finish top 5 with Iowa’s resources (tradition, fan base, conference, and now deep NIL pockets) than it is literally anywhere else. Therefore, not consistently threatening for team titles (yes, regardless of PSU) is unacceptable. Top 5 is a given at Iowa with our resources. Failing to consistently compete for team titles is failure at Iowa with our resources.

I literally said DT last year before he was hired by OSU and now we’re here and you’re still asking for someone who could possibly just maybe do better. Good grief.
That was NOT a possibility at the time. The only reason he even ended up at OkStste was Smith deciding to retire. DT was still competing and wasn’t actively looking to coach. But keep being you…

Yeah, who knows, but it seems reasonable. Don't know how Teemer hurt his shoulder, but with the hamstring injury, have no idea how he was able to stay remotely close to being in wrestling shape.

I'm a finance/sales guy, so my medical expertise is on par with Cosmo Kramer when he was a dermatologist. Think it was Dr. VonNostrand lol. Whatever the reason, it plain sucks.

It was possible. If TNT had been relieved of their duties and we had inquired, who knows. But you keep being you…

So fire Brands, hope you can hire a guy that had shown zero coaching experience, let alone any interest, so far and then what if he says no?

Again, you guys are so Anti-Brands you don’t live in reality. You just don’t fire someone like him unless there is a CLEAR road to someone visibly better…

Not quite. Inquire with DT to see if he’s on board first.

But let’s keep doing it your way and be content with consistent top 5s and just pray we didn’t miss out when it comes to DT (or whoever it may be next).

Brands has had every resource sanderson has had. Plus the legacy of iowa and gable. Hell there was a period of time brands ignored alumni, pissed gable off for not taking advice and pushed great legacy guys out! Yes he had a huge part of what we have been watching last few yrs

You guys can argue and complain all you want and I can agree with you but the fact of the matter is that Tom Brands is sitting on one of the coldest seats in all of college sports. There is no way without a massive Sandusky sized scandal that Tom Brands leaves the head coaching job not under his own free will. It's just not going to happen. Since Cael won his national championship in 2011 he has lost it twice, once to Iowa and once to tOSU. There is a very real possibility that he would have lost it to Iowa twice if Covid had not happened. During that time Iowa has been the second most consistent program in the country. Have they gotten first or second every year? No but they have always been in the mix of the top 5 and had the best overall results aside from PSU. In addition to having results that just about any college program would love in any sport they have also managed to sell way more tickets then any other program in the country including PSU. They have also essentially self funded a new state of the art training facility which is something that so very rarely happens. In addition to that they have produced a couple Olympic medal winners and in the past few years have nabbed some of the best recruits in the country. In addition they have had one major scandal and that was university wide and in the court of public opinion was a big nothing burger that mostly garnered sympathy nationwide. In addition to all of this the Brands Brothers I believe are probably given a lot of credit for starting the first power five women's program in the country that has gone on to win two national titles in its first two years. Beth has got 99 problems as the AD but believe me she does not see wrestling as one. Iowa Wrestling is still an extremely bright spot in the galaxy of Iowa athletics. With all of that being said I would love to see some new blood at the assistant coaching level.

Not nearly the amount of Alumni money and also not centrally located for the best high school wrestling talent in the country.

What!?!? OSU was meeting with DT in State College 12 days after the Trials. That could have been Iowa. It doesn't matter whether Brands or Smith were ready to leave or not, the school is ultimately in charge of when a coach leaves.

That's why it needs to be Morningstar to recruiting coordinator and Terry to the HWC. That opens up two spots for new blood. If you want to move on from Telford you got 3 spots.

Lmfao, didn’t Taylor approach OkState AFTER Smith’s retirement was announced?

As a PSU fan, I’m enjoying Brands doing Brands things over and over.

But on a serious note, yes I agree they should have kicked tires on Magic Man, but why is Doug Schwab not on the top of the list??

Iowa alum and seems to develop the hell out of kids. IMO coach of year this year

Imagine Schwab with the resources Iowa can offer??

He is making a good case for himself.

I guess I could have read to the end before I replied...

I would be happy if Schwab was the next guy, but I honestly don't see any guy being enough to take down PSU right now. And the leap from taking uni to where they are is smaller than taking Iowa to where PSU is, unfortunately

If TnT can land blue chips like raneys and mocco and miller, etc, I think they give Iowa the best chance still. If they can't, then it might be time to think about moving on.

(In reality the real /only important criteria is what the big boosters think, not a chump like me on message boards)

Ill give you the slight edge for $$ but the recruiting excuse no way. Cael immediately ripped the crown from iowa overnight on attracting kids. Just by professionalism and character. In todays landscape kids are going everywhere. Brands has not put the effort in to attract like cael has. Brands was handed a 30 yr plus legacy. Sanderson would of done this from Ames.

Schwab is a beast and I love that guy, but if our long term goal is to hand the keys to Spencer after LA, then Schwab wouldn't be in the mix.

I realize it's all speculation with Spencer but many ppl have indicated that is a real possibility after Tom's contract is fulfilled.

Brands brothers have to go. That'll happen when they decide to retire. Until then Cael will reign supreme with little to no competition.
