UNI Iowa basketball

I used to care whether or not Iowa played UNI, not any more. I’m watching the Iowa-North Florida (whoever they are), looks like a rousing, packed house. It is so loud I’m surprised the players can hear the coaches. Games like North Florida, Cal Poly, Kennesaw State are what makes Iowa Basketball what it is today.

You do realize that Cal Poly and North Florida are part of the Las Vegas Invite right?

Evansville lost by 17 to East Carolina tonight
and yet they still have a higher RPI than Iowa or anyone Iowa has played. It's early in the season so these numbers are nearly irrelevant, but UNI has an RPI of 31 right now. To say that UNI is not a worth while opponent is a joke.

Again who cares.

In order for Iowa playing home-and-home with UNI to be in the interests of the program, there would have to be a good chance that UNI would serve as a quality win (or loss) for us.

But over the last few years, UNI has been just another mediocre midmajor. They haven't even made the CIT. We blew them out of the water when we played them during that stretch, and those games clearly did not serve as quality wins for us.

In the 2010s, they've finished better than 11-7 in an increasingly weak MVC once. Once! This is during a decade that both Creighton and Wichita State left the MVC and the conference basically became a one-bid league.

In the 2010s, UNI would have been a potential quality win on our NCAA resume for two of those years -- and they needed a run in the MVC tournament one of those two years to qualify as such.

Based on how their program has trended, the reality is that we're not missing out on a game that's llkely to be a quality win or loss by not playing them -- and if that's not the case, we're better off either scheduling a home-and-home with someone that would be a quality win / loss, or scheduling home games against weaker teams where we don't have to play at their place.

If they were willing to play at Carver exclusively like other midmajors do, I would support playing them for sentimental reasons, but I assume they're not willing to do that.

of course I never said that so

Yes, they are “preliminary” games. The outcomes of the preliminary games have no bearing on the matchups for the real tournament. The 4 main teams: Iowa, Texas Tech, Creighton and San Diego State. If Tennessee State would have beaten TT on Thursday Iowa would still be playing TT. We’ll know a lot more about this team when they play a Power 5 team.

If they are trending down, you must not look at projected standings at all. Furthermore, if you are going to schedule easy wins, why not make it a guarantee sell out?

North Florida is a better team this year than UNI.

Iowa did fine this year with the scheduling. However I’m guessing I’m going to be annoyed down the road at some point when Iowa has one of those crazy bad schedules again. Hopefully Fran/Barth prove me wrong.

I don’t feel Iowa is above a 2 for 1 with UNI, and I would think UNI should snatch that up at 1st chance. The extra tickets sold for the 2 home games should make up the road game once every 3 years compared to the duds we have each year with horrible teams with no crowd.

I don’t need to be reminded of the ‘incident’ as a reason to not go. I’ve said before, if we never went to a place where we got hosed at some point we would never play a road game. I would never believe that Jacobsen and UNI set up some sort of plot to have horrible officiating that game to have Fran go nuts and embarrassed. It was terrible, but Fran didn’t make the situation any better.

Just my 2 cents.

Jacobsen has said more than once that in his mind, UNI has earned a home and home series. Baring tournament matchups, the two teams won't play again until he and Fran are both gone (if then).

Wondering if Drake might be more pragmatic, I don't know if their current coach has weighed in on the issue.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion I guess. I bet UNI caves in on this down the road. That seems like a no-brainer to me for UNI. Apparently Ben J thinks he has the best mid-major in the country to earn a home and home with a solid B10 school. I’m not an AD so what do I know.

I wouldn’t mind playing Drake, but they won’t fill the seats like a UNI game would.

no. UNI is pretty damn good this year. They will lose some games on the road when the shooting is off or Phyfe is in foul trouble but otherwise they will challenge for the MVC title.

Kenpom has them at #99. We got blown out by DePaul and we're 45 spots higher.

I'm sure they're better than the last few years, but I very much doubt that they're "pretty damn good."

The last time UNI came to carver the attendance was 10,667. That is half way between the attendance of the Oral Roberts and North Florida games the last week.

Well if that’s true, never mind. It Clearly doesn’t matter who they play. Iowa fans have clearly made Iowa basketball low on the priority list. I’m always jealous I don’t live closer to Iowa City as I would have loved to go to the Cal Poly game today. Maybe I wouldn’t go as much I think.

Maybe if Fran didn't throw a tantrum it would have never got that way?

I'm usually pretty quick to criticize Fran's behavior, but I never have for this one.

I used to like the game, I went up there for several in the UNI-dome, and there were a couple we'd lost prior to 2011 fair and square. And I can live with that.

This game was different, it was the turning point. I don't want to see us go back, and we're not going back up there, probably ever.

Iowa isn't playing UNI because UNI is a bad opponent or hurts the SOS or whatever. Iowa (and Iowa State) aren't playing home and homes against Drake and UNI because they don't want to. Period. I'm an Iowa fan, and from their standpoint I understand where they are coming from. None of their peers in the Big 10 or Big 12 are agreeing to home and homes from Valley teams. Of course Iowa stands a decent chance of losing when going to Cedar Falls especially and even Des Moines, there is nothing to be gained from an Iowa standpoint by giving UNI the chance to play a Big 10 team on its homecourt and selling out the McLeod Center.

Going to 20 conference games gave Iowa the cover it needed to end the series with UNI and Drake. It's not the end of the world, it's not Iowa's job to prop up the UNI or Drake programs.

Feel free to read the write up ESPN gave about Iowa the bubble team and come back to discuss whether or not playing a Northern Iowa team is worth while. Adding to that fact, the NET rankings give more weight to playing a team away from home.
