Unusually persistent cold weather dominates central Florida....

You ever consider solar? I know a guy😉

I don’t know if it’s same in Iowa, but here in Florida, hardly a day goes by without a door-to-door solar power salesmen darkening my doorstep.

I would like to add solar panels. I haven’t pulled the trigger yet because I am apprehensive about signing the long-term contracts that are needed to finance them. It’s like a second mortgage.

There were also concerns about how solar panels affect your homeowner’s insurance, which is already a touchy subject here in the Sunshine State.

I’m in Tampa Bay, we service most of the state. If you‘re interested in solar shoot me an email. I’ll answer any questions and will give you the best price possible.

Our solar panels added $16.86 to our homeowners premium....$16.86!

I think panels in Iowa depend a lot on who the electrical provider us….Here in DSM area MidAmerica is pretty “pro-solar” and the process was pretty straight forward and easy….I have heard in a town just NW, the electric provider is not as “solar friendly” and installing solar can be quite trying and frustrating .

This week’s cold temperatures mean that manatees are back in abundance at Blue Spring State Park in Orange City, which logged a daily count of 705 on Thursday, according to the park's Facebook page.

That approaches the park’s previous record daily count of 729 manatees, set on Jan. 17, 2023. The previous high was 721, logged on Jan. 29, 2022. It also represents an increase over Wednesday’s count of 685.

On Thursday, representatives of Friends of Blue Spring State Park and Save the Manatee Club were slated to be at the park offering manatee merchandise and manatee adoptions, according to the Blue Spring State Park Facebook page.

With forecasts that call for warmer temperatures, it’s hard to predict how many of the creatures will remain in the 72-degree spring waters through the weekend, but the park will be open from 8 a.m.-sundown throughout the holiday weekend, including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Here’s what you need to know about manatees and how to see them at Blue Spring:

Why do manatees flock to Blue Spring?
The spring run is federally protected and closed to recreation during manatee season, which runs from mid-November to March, as the marine mammals flock to the 72-degree waters when temperatures drop.

The St. John's River was a chilly 61.7 degrees on Wednesday, according to Save the Manatee Club, but manatees can swim into the river for short periods during cold weather to feed.

How cold is it expected to get this weekend?
Nighttime lows are forecast to dip to 57 degrees on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne.

Nighttime lows are expected to be in the low 60s through Christmas. Inland areas could be a bit colder.

What are tips for visiting the park to see manatees?
Blue Spring State Park, 2100 W. French Ave. in Orange City, is open from 8 a.m.-sundown daily.

Admission at the gate is $4 for single-occupant vehicle, $6 for per vehicle of 2-8 people, $2 for pedestrians, bicyclists.

If the park reaches capacity during winter manatee season, it remains open to visitors on a one-in, one-out basis. Biggest crowds typically arrive between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when waits can range from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the day.

Is Florida still feeding them in order to fight their population decline?

Is Ft.Myers getting cleaned up? I was in Punta Gorda not long after the storm and it was pretty torn up.
I don’t really spend time there. In Marco.
Getting better all the time I guess. I have only been here since Dec 30 this winter. I guess I was here late October and early November.
I have talked to some people in Sanibel and it has been improving rapidly.

I had never seen so much “bleaching” of mangroves before. I was out on one of the barrier islands for an hour or so and there was plenty of devastation.

This fall has been unusually cold and what's really unusual is that it's been persistently below normal here at Tradition Manor. Yeah, we can get an early cold snap but it's usually warm until well into December.

Of course, this is the year I went all-in on Fall gardening. It's been colder than normal for weeks and the weather forecast doesn't see it getting any better any time soon. I finally gave up on the basil today and pulled it to make way for some broccoli. In most years November is plenty warm for basil, but not this year. It's all stunted and sad, so.... goodbye. The tomatoes and the green beans are fine so far and I got great production out of the cukes so I can't blame that for declining in the cold, but the basil was a bust.

Thanks Global Warming?
Record warmth this December in Chicago!

It’s x1,000,000 times better but still a long way to go. Tarps on roofs still and lots of distressed properties in need of rehab.
My nephew (who must be up the road from you in Englewood) just got his roof and other repairs finished. Lots of neighbors have as well but he said people are still finishing up some small DIY projects/repairs. It’s a neighborhood of older homes where some of the houses still had a jalousie window or two and “terrazzo” floors so many of us Floridians grew up with.

MWP is storm chasing this morning. Note that I stopped following him for weather forecasts after the hurricane that went 150 miles offshore past Tampa and hit Perry/Crystal River. He hypes too much though I don't think intentionally. He isn't a pro and doesn't have the knowledge to put storm risks into the proper context. Seems like a good guy and is a very good marketer.

Heavy overnight rain across the Panhandle and now the sun is out. 75 and beautiful today.
Tuesday forecast not so great though.

Rain just ended in Tampa. There was probably 4 hours of light rain and about 30 minutes of heavy rain. The heaviest storms were south of Bradenton.

I’m in Tampa Bay, but we do a lot of work down that way. When insurance money is involved, nothing gets done in a timely manner unfortunately.

Quite a bit rain in Marco yesterday.
So far today it has been a steady rain for a couple of hours and will last until around 2:00.
Not a good beach day.
