Now this is a fu low blow even for you Pistachio!!!

I'm sure your parents didn't know anything about your underage drinking???!!!!! And most coaches don't know about their ass. coaches illegal recruiting....
Analogies aren't your thing, Chuck. His Mom admitted to actively participating.

My Mom didn't provide me with fake credentials and encourage me to go to the liquor store over 500 times knowing it was an NCAA violation that would get me kicked off the team and embarrass the program.

so far we know this is impacting a handful of individuals here in Iowa— but I have a hard time believing all the culprits were from two universities. It seems like someone went out of their way to look into the two most prominent ones and dig and dig until they found something. Where are the others— UNI, Wartburg (bunch of gambling degenerates there), Loras, Coe, Kirkwood? I understand not all these fall under the NCAA rules, but these charges are outside of NCAA.

No one is saying this.
There are 26 individuals and so far the ones we know about are all from Iowa and Iowa State are they not? Part of that makes sense since Iowa is the most prolific university in the state and Iowa State is a very distant second.

The majority of these bets happened in 2021 and 2022. Dekkers turned 21 last July. Investigations take time.

And it's still illegal by NCAA rules for athletes to bet on any sport they sponsor a championship in, let alone their own sport or their own team.
Iwas talking about noah shanon. You will notice that he wasn't listed among those who are charged. Shanon was 21 years old in 2021.

So it seems that using someone else's account is now called "tampering", and that is what the state is using to criminalize the people? That is ridiculous. They broke college and NCAA rules, and will be dealt with accordingly, but criminal charges are stupid

Financial transactions are regulated. Gambling is also regulated. Using someone else's credentials to do either is illegal...particularly if you're underage and using an adult's account to circumvent the law. The term "tampering" may not seem to fit, but the action is clearly illegal.

I am going to withhold judgement on the parents here. Not saying this what happened but perhaps the legal ramifications are stiffer if the parents said they didn’t know about it and their son stole their personal information. Thus they ultimately were trying to protect their son from further damage.

So you’ve basically responded to your own “concern”

Who cares about what happens at the baby colleges, so, Moving on… Let’s play big boy football and worry about the big boys.

So let me get this straight, illegal recruiting doesn't effect the outcome of games? Supposedly getting the highest rated players to come to your school is the way to ensure future success, but your saying swaying the top players with enticements doesn't effect games? o_O
Players getting paid to come play for a program does not compromise the integrity of the outcome of games; players placing wagers on what is going to happen in their own games does. This shouldn't be hard to comprehend.

From what I understand the state was looking into underage gambling overall and one way they did that was to pull all uiowa and iowa state email addresses as there is a higher likelihood students are underage. They sent the list of emails to the schools to confirm the details. This is when Iowa and Iowa State identified those that were athletes and self reported the violations which kicked all of this off with the NCAA. This is why the initial number was something like 250 students of which 26 were athletes.

I could be off a little bit but I believe this is how it all started.

This is from a Jul 12, 2023 article. You can't tell me what they are finding at Iowa and Iowa State is not happening at other schools where sports betting is legal in their states. Here is just a sample of those schools: LSU, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kansas, Kansas State, Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Ohio State, Cincinnati, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Rutgers, Oregon, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, West Virginia, UNLV, UMass, UConn and Wyoming.

Where Is Sports Betting Legal?

Use the links to jump to your state.

Are you saying that these students would have used their uiowa email addresses when signing up for the gambling apps? Not exactly a smart move...

My pardon, I initially thought you were talking about Dekkers.

Shannon has not been in contact with any criminal investigators, however, I still don't see the issue with him being investigated by the NCAA, because as I said before, Iowa self-reported the violations to them. Nobody had their name given to the NCAA by criminal investigators.

Then shouldn’t it be illegal if you buy an underage person a lottery ticket for their birthday or a holiday? You are clearly purchasing that ticket for someone you know is under age and knowing they may win money.
Would they be in trouble if they told mom or dad what bet to place? They still have the inside information.

Unfortunately, I think anyone who placed bets will get a suspension of some sort.

It is illegal. Rarely enforced at the point of purchase or redemption unless it's a big win. A 17 year old could probably cash in a $5 winner, but I doubt a 10 year old could. Hit the powerball and you can bet your ass they're checking your ID

In statement, the Iowa Racing & Gaming Commission is still saying betting markets were not compromised in light of criminal charges filed against Iowa & ISU athletes.

Interesting defense.

In case the tweet info gets cut off:

"The defense believes that the State used Geofence, or similar data collection methods, as well as phone pinging data to capture data on the Iowa and Iowa State campuses after which students and other athletes were eliminated as targets unless they belonged to specific male athletic teams, which if true, would be a violation of the Defendant's constitutional rights as the State is not allowed to use discretion when choosing who to apply the law to."

Well this is certainly interesting. Just male athletes. No students, no females. Seems like a potential issue frankly.

Your honor, I fight this speeding ticket based on a Constitutional right that requires all speeders be ticketed.

But if the police recognized 1000 speeders and only gave tickets to football players and let everyone else off the hook, how would you feel? I am not saying they did not do something wrong but this was clearly targeted. Something else going on here behind the scenes that doesn’t smell right.

I would think it's weird...like they don't have the resources to charge and prosecute every violator so they chose to make an example out of someone. It's great when officer discretion works in your favor but sucks when it works against you.

According to Cory from From The Hawkeye Of The Storm, there is one more football player that is expected to miss time this year, and he considers them more significant than Noah Shannon.

Are we talking Nico Ragaini? Cooper DeJean? Xavier Nwankpa? Kaleb Johnson? This makes me pretty nervous.

posters on here have said this will involve our defensive backfield. but it continues to be just rumors & speculation.

Let’s say a corvette and a civic are both going 90 on interstate 80.
Everyone is going to expect the corvette to get the ticket if cop can only pull one over.

Realistically, how many Iowa Women’s sports had ANY bets placed on them for the year other than BB in March Madness.
If they were trying to find potential bets on own sports, that is realistic way to reduce data set. Eliminate 53?% of data that contains potential of 2% of crimes.

Your analogy is a good one. Cedar Rapids still has the speed cameras on I-380, correct? Imagine if they caught 1,000 speeders and threw out all the female drivers and targeted just the male drivers who were student athletes? According to one of the defense lawyers, this is what appears to have happened; only male student athletes were targeted in this gambling investigation. The other males and all females were excluded.

So are you going to put pictures of all the parents who's kids are being investigated? I'm sure your live in a glass house ass.

I wonder how many more tickets hot young girls get out of versus middle aged men?
