Update: Noah Shannon CLEARED TO PRACTICE. 26 UI student-athletes investigated for online gambling, incl in FB, Men’s BB, Baseball, T&F & Wrestling

Even if this was brought to court it wouldn't be heard for quite some time and players affected wouldn't retroactively be awarded eligibility. The NCAA probably doesn't give two shits unless it hurts the upper level pocketbooks. I'm actually surprised they've managed to release all recommended punishment now, and not drag out each group until their respective season is underway or finished. That's more the speed I'm accustomed to from that organization.

yep; and, as noted above, players would still be withheld from competitions during the entire appeals process.

i hope lessons are learned and every student athlete is paying attention

No I don’t know. That’s why I’m asking. I would think if the school is compliant they’d be okay but if they try to hide something they’d be in trouble. I don’t know if they were to find out a player “should have been ineligible” would be enough.

I just don't recall the NCAA ever before vacating wins, championships, etc based on bets that were placed by participants. Hopefully this is not an issue.

From what's being reported:

Shannon apparently bet on one of Iowa's other teams (ie, he bet on an Iowa basketball game or Iowa baseball or some other Iowa sport).

How many bets he placed and how many dollars he wagered has not been revealed as of now.

Here is an important reminder from a month ago, which indicates at the very worst Noah Shannon would miss 6 games (but the way KF sounded, it would be less).

Possible penalties Noah Shannon is facing:

* Football players could lose half a season if they bet on ANY college football contests.

* For other wagering activity:

--- they would face a loss of 30% of the season if they wagered more than $800

---20% of the season if they wagered between $501 and $800

--10% of the season for $201 to $500

---and gambling education (no games missed) for $200 or less.

so much for that hope!

well, at least the football team can now move forward....

I think the broader question what do you think about the DCI excluding EVERYONE but male athletes? I think some heads are going to roll on this one. I'm no lawyer but this seems like Bias-Based profiling. I wonder if the DCI wanted these guys to be punished beyond more than just civil law. I think the state of Iowa should send the NCAA a bill for their services.

I have yet to see anyone, with the exception of one defense lawyer, asking about this.

Next man in, and I heard his back up is Aaron Graves, so we should be fine.
Yep Graves and Anterio Thompson the juco transfer who's 6'3" and 295 lbs. Said to have excellent quickness. Opposite Lee and Black on the other side along with Allen playing inside some as well, we'll be fine. Freshman Brackney listed at DE is 6'4" and 290 already so he may move inside some as well, along with classmate Borcherding-Johnson.

Just a tremendously corrupt organization. I’d love to see one of the big streaming services do a documentary series on just how venal they are.

You can say that again.

Look at Kansas as an example. The NCAA said Bill Self was in on the the Adidas scandal and Kansas gave the NCAA a big "f u" and rewarded him with a lifetime contract.

Iowa plays by the rules and guys like Noah Shannon are the ones the NCAA hammers.

The sportsbooks have Geofencing around the athletic buildings at Iowa and Iowa State, they saw the activity and ran to the DCI to investigate
Everything I've heard has said one of the baseball player's Mom noticed charges on her credit card for a gambling site and reported it as fraud / identity theft. Turns out it was her Son using her name and cc.

Zero sympathy for Noah Shannon. The players are explicitly warned about illegal gambling. You have to be a dumbass to gamble when your eligibility is on the line

That said, if the speculation about bets placed is true, I do believe a shorter suspension (maybe 4-6 games) is more appropriate.

Also, I don’t see the value of making a big deal about the supposed gender specific LE targeting. None of that is a defense to the male athlete’s alleged illegal conduct.

This would confirm my other theory that it’s not actually Mom’s giving their sons the go ahead and gamble. They’re falling on the swords for their kids so they don’t get charged with more serious crimes like identity theft.

Nope they arent. Those tax $$$ put to good use. Can thank your county attorneys in Johnson and Story County as well. Heavy hitters coming down hard on such criminal activity

This whole investigation has pretty much gutted the Iowa wrestling program with 4 wrestlers suspended one year and 2 others facing multiple meet suspensions

I think Fran and Kirk have to be breathing a sigh of relief because the damage done to their programs sucks but it's nothing compared to what's been done to Iowa wrestling; they're in for a long year.

And, I know, the athletes knew they couldn't gamble yet they did it any way.

Did he turn himself on or did the DCI give his name to the Athletic dept for not comittomg a crime?

Correct.

It's semantics, actually, but right around the same time both the Iowa baseball player (Christensen maybe?) and Hunter Dekkers were getting caught for their mischievous activities and that sparked the geofencing of both universities.

It's an either/or as far as who triggered it.

It wasn't just some random act by the Sportsbooks, because otherwise they would've flagged the activity around the sports facilities as soon as it happened. Not sat on it for months, or years, in some cases...............

And, why in the world would the sportsbooks have any interest in reducing their revenue. I just can't see that happening.

Just think if they turned in all the kids sporting fake ID at the bars.

Loads of charges on those poor bastards. I mean what are all the serious-sounding charges they're hitting these players with for what amounts to "using their parent's account"?

Christ, if they really wanted to deter underage drinking at the bars, just threaten federal prison for fake IDs...........

My gosh, do you think KF is breathing a sigh of relief AND hammering it home once again that you don't gamble when you are a student athlete?

Hell, all it would take is a jealous ex-girlfriend to report you for participating in an NCAA Tournament pool.

NCAA is dying and doing this to pretend it still has teeth.

Not sure if you are a wrestling guy but you should know that quite a few wrestlers dont wrestle the whole season. Woods took several meets off last year. The program isnt gutted. Arnold will replace Brands, kueter replaces Cass, Riggins replaces siebrect Assad is tough to replace but he hasnt been exactly a world beater.

So now the natural question is which sports books and what other states did they operate in? Why wasn’t this done in the other states?
I could start another thread about that so it doesn't get lost in all this scuffle....

P.S. though.....every state has a "Department of Criminal Investigations" so to speak. They're just not all called that. I believe some states also have separate divisions solely for gaming/gambling.

It's just that the jurisdiction in Iowa falls to the DCI.
