Updated Playoff Grid as of 11/7 with New Poll

If MSU, OSU and Michigan take each other out over the next month how much does that affect us even if we win the big 10? would us undefeated with a win over a 1 loss east team get us in if LSU, Clemson, TCU/Baylor/Okie St ( 1 of the 3), Houston/Memphis (1 or the other) are undefeated and ND/Stanford have only one loss?

ND worries more than Stanford with one loss due to common opponents. We beat up N/W at N/W Stanford loss to them at N/W advantage us. if N/D beats Pitt by more than 3 at Pitt that could be viewed as a better win than us winning by 3 at home and put them in front of us. Yes I know many things would have to happen for that sort of scenario o come up but just wondering thoughts on it
I'm not good with all of the math, but if we have to get left out vs. a one loss team (which I highly doubt we would), I would much rather it be Stanford than Notre Dame.

Pitt beating ND would do us numbers as committee looks at common opponents and their SOS is based of opponents and opponents opponents record

Great work on the spreadsheet.

But 6 teams (the green 6) cannot "control their own destiny" for a 4 team playoff.

"Control your own destiny" has a long-established specific sports meaning (which Kirk tried to blur late last season), which is that, if a team wins out, they get the given destiny being discussed. Iowa "controls its own destiny" right now, that being the Big Ten West title, in that if Iowa wins out, they win the division. No one else "controls their own destiny". All other teams need Iowa to lose once or more.

Truly, no team "controls their destiny" for the playoff, since the 4 playoff teams are selected by a committee, and not strictly by the outcome of remaining games.

There are a total of 8 teams that control their own destiny....but it's mathematically impossible for more than 4 of them to do so:

B1G: Iowa, tOSU and MSU cannot all win out - at least 2 of the 3 will fail to maintain control
Big 12: Baylor, TCU and OSU cannot all win out - at least 2 of the 3 will fail to maintain control
SEC: LSU can control their own destiny, everyone else needs help. Because the SEC has almost no chance of being left out of the playoffs, Alabama probably controls their destiny as well, since they still have a game against LSU on the schedule.
ACC: Clemson controls their own destiny

The undefeated teams from non-power 5s need help. All of the 1-loss teams need help (except maybe Alabama). If the B1G, ACC, Big 12 and SEC all have undefeated teams after conference championship games, those teams will be in the playoffs. Sure, there's the human element, but I think it's really unlikely that even an 11-1 Notre Dame team or an 11-1 Stanford team beat out a 12-0 Iowa team or a 12-0 Oklahoma State. tOSU, MSU, Clemson

Updated with the new CFB ranking order now instead.. Not sure how to handle the color thing because I'm not sure Alabama controls their own destiny if Ole Miss wins out?

Might I suggest that you add North Carolina to the grid? If they win out, they will have a 12-game winning streak with their last win vs. #1 Clemson. Would be a lot of noise coming out of Chapel Hill.

Unfortunately I think you can change Alabama back to green. Pretty safe that they control their own destiny now. Win out and they are in.

Notre Dame and Stanford have 1 loss. I don't get it, not like they have beaten a top notch team

Not sure when I took them off.. Or maybe never even had them since they weren't top 25. Will add in tonight

November 9th Playoff Prediction (IF...IF Iowa were to get in):
1) Clemson
2) Alabama
3) Notre Dame
4) Iowa

Iowa vs Clemson. I would take that...I think the Big 12 beats each other up and no team walks out of there undefeated. ND beats Stanford. Bama runs the table. Clemson wins a very close one to N. Carolina in the ACC title game. Not a prediction but just a hope that Iowa wins the next 3 and beats Khaki pants and Rudock in Indy after they knock off OSU...
