In listening to coach Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz, it seems “indefinitely” means through at least the regular season. During Tuesday’s Big Ten football coaches teleconference, Ferentz said VandeBerg “might have a chance” to be back around the bowl game. In other words, VandeBerg’s injury is on more of a monthly timetable than weekly.

Ferentz also said he would consider redshirting the senior if the receiver was interested, but the conversation hasn’t gotten to that point yet.

Marc Morehouse of The Gazette (Cedar Rapids) said VandeBerg would be eligible for a medical hardship, even though VandeBerg has played in four games this season.

I posted this in another thread, and I'll post it here too. The bottom line is that if VandeBerg does not play in another game, he will meet all the requirements for a Medical Hardship Waiver.

I looked into this more: the maximum allowable games played is calculated with a 30% threshold, and you round up to the nearest full number. See bylaw 14.2.4.3.6.2. The maximum allowable games any FBS team can schedule is 12, and you get to add one game for the conference championship, regardless of whether your team competes in the game. See bylaw 14.2.4(d). The calculation does not include bowl games. See bylaw 14.2.4.3.6.1.1.1. Thus, for every Big 10 team the maximum allowable games is 13.

The math then goes like this: 30% * 13 games = 3.9 allowable games played. You then round 3.9 to 4 and thus VandeBerg can play in 4 games.

If he were to participate in the bowl game, he would not harm the 30% calculation, but it would still make him ineligible for a medical hardship because per bylaw 14.2.4(b) the injury must have resulted in "incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season" which does include the bowl game.

I just hope everything works out for the best. Maybe he'll come back late this year, if not, hopefully a successfully hardship. It'd be such a sad way to end a career.

Hopefully this means Rutgers' Janoris Grant can come back next year.

You round up from 13 games and it's 31%. 33% for 12 games. Maybe math isn't a determining factor

This confused me at first too, but essentially you back into the calculation of how many games an athlete can play based on 30% participation. Thus, if 30% is the threshold, then the formula looks like this:
  • 30% * total team games = allowable games played
  • 30% * 13 = 3.9
  • You then round 3.9 to a full number to calculate 4 allowable games played
My first instinct was the same as yours, look at how many games he played, divide by total games, and compare to 30%. Under such a calculation, VandeBerg would have been over 30%. But this is not how the NCAA calculates it.

We all know the second that he can put pads on, Kirk is going to do it. Which means Kirk will blow any chances of him getting a red shirt by putting him on punt block against Illinois, just to see him get reinjured.

Is Matt set to graduate in the spring? It's possible he might just be ready to graduate, get married, and move on
