Wagner at Practice Today...

Dude nice knowing you, you seem like a great guy. But I assume you are now getting the banhammer.

Meh...I can handle it.

Ragaini looks like the kind of kid KF gets late that comes in under the radar, and ends up being a really solid player. That would be nice of course to add an impact player to the WR room. Big T Wirfs the FIRST Iowa frosh to start at tackle for the Hawks under KF. This was no fluke. I'd see him 2nd team all BIG next year, 1st team junior year, and AA 1st team senior year, and a first round draft pick after that season. Good to hear Stanley's foot work progressing. Definetly something he need to improve on from his solid first season.

Didn't Ragaini come from same prep school as Tevaun Smith? Least same neck of the woods. Smith was the perfect under the radar guy who came in who was great over looked from being from Canada and not playing a lot of football prior. Only thing I wish about Tevaun is like Ott didn't waste and pull his red shirt during the dreadful 12' season.

Yeah jelly much appreciated. I really hope this doesn't get you in trouble this is by far one of the best threads I can remember. CAN WE GET THE DUDES SOME NEW PRACTICE JERSEYS?

Nah...there are a lot of coaches there, different opinions, different perspectives, different points of emphasis. The only thing I know definitively is that that practice unis need to catch up with the modern era...everything else I was told came right from KF’s mouth so it must be true.

Nothing great really and some I just can’t share.

The wr beating

The most important thing tho, and something that I’ve been sitting on, is that Iowa’s practice jerseys are dated, baggy, and just kinda gross. Man it feels good to get that off my chest.

We talkin' about practice...............jerseys?

Wirfs and Aleric probably BOTH jump to the NFL as juniors

Just my guess. The last 3 guys I remember getting playing time at OT as freshmen: Bulaga , Reiff and James Daniels. All 3 jumped early.
I'm pretty sure all those guys played guard as frosh for the Hawks, and I'm certain that none of them started at tackle, because it had never been done before this season. It's certainly possible that Wirfs or Jackson won't be here as seniors, but I'm hopeful they'll follow in the footsteps of their great predesssors, Gallery, and Scherff, who came back for their senior years, and BOTH won the Outland trophy, and were top 5 picks in the NFL draft. Sounds like a winning recipe to me......:D

Ragaini is going to make an impact. Great to hear hes competing hard. And good to hear that coaches are keeping him humble about it too. motivate the DB and the WR.

Reiff spent most of his RS FR year playing OG ... he covered LT when Bulaga had the whole thyroid scare though ('09). The examples of Bulaga and Reiff aren't necessarily representative ... because LTs have long been considered on the OL money-positions. Of course, subsequently, dominant athletic DTs have caused interior O-linement to get more props these days.

Mike Jones played and started at OT initially for the Hawks as a FR ... he stayed through his SR year. Vandervelde started from his FR season and he stayed through his SR year too (he primarily played at OG ... though he practiced some at C). Scherff was essentially a dual-starter with Tobin at OG back in '11 ... had he not had health issues in the pre-season that year he may have won the job outright. As we all know, Scherff stayed through his SR year.

Whether guys jump to the pros or not will entirely be predicated upon how they're projected by NFL teams. If they're likely a first round pick ... then Ferentz will advocate for them and they will have the opportunity to leave early. Both guys have high ceilings, but at this early juncture I'd say that Wirfs quick ascension points to him being the guy more likely to be able to leave early.

The 2 I remember clearly were: 1) Reiff starting for Bulaga in the rain at PSU where Clayborn had the scoop and score. IIRC he was head up on an all-conference DE and it looked like a bad matchup on paper but Reiff held his own. I believe he was a RSFR at the time.

2) James Daniels being pressed into tackle in the 2nd half of the Illinois game when he was a true Freshman. He could run block, but every time we dropped back to pass the Illinois DE just torched him. Several sacks IIRC. So, in the 4th quarter we decided to run the ball every.single.play. IIRC, Canzeri took all those reps and ended up with 240 yards on 40 carries or something. They knew we were running it and still couldn’t stop us! Smash-mouth football at its finest.

I must be mistaken about Bulaga. I know he started for the lions share of his true freshman year at LG, but I thought he may have had to take some reps at LT, just due to injury. I tried relying on my memory, which is always a really bad idea.

I stand by my prediction of both Aleric and Tristan jumping after their junior years. Tristan will get 2 more years at the coveted LT position. I am hoping he is our next 1st round pick from the OL. Now, Aleric played LT for one year and projecting 2 years as the starting RT. Pro teams love that kind of flexibility and even if he doesn’t grade out as a Top 10 pick, he will probably get a 1st or 2nd round grade. Especially since he is coming from a program well known for churning out NFL ready OLinemen. Oh, and he is 6’7” 320 (+)? with NFL ready skills.

Selfishly, that should also mean we had a kick-ass OLine for both 2018 and 2019. Let’s hope!

My Brother was an officer in the Navy on a nuclear sub that called Pearl Harbor home base. He said the most impressive cusser he ever heard was a 30 year old female civilian Electrical Engineer contracted to help on their sub's refit while in drydock. She was about 4 foot 10, maybe 90 pounds and could cut loose with terms and phrases that made the old Chief (Petty Officer) blush. Her face would get beet red and you could almost see the blood vessels popping in her eyes when she decided to vent. My Brother said the sub's Commander would just turn away, shake his head and try to keep from giggling whenever she started dressing down a member of his crew for screwing up.

She had to be of either Scottish or Russian decent

I'd like to thank everyone that actually had something intelligent to add to this thread. It's too bad I had to skip about every third one because of the the obsession with profanity of this board. And no I'm not a prude and yes I do

I'll ask the next time we talk. He also mentioned their sub had a crazy Filipino cook who had a quick temper and would even light up the Commander and XO if something pissed him off. I asked how the skipper and XO would take that. My Brother said, "often laughing hysterically". This was over 30 years ago, so these interactions may not represent the modern Navy of today.

I haven't read all 5 pages before this, so sorry if this has been asked before, but is there some rule against AW participating in spring practice? Every minute of football practice he can get at this point would be invaluable. Even if he decides to leave Iowa after the semester, what could it hurt?

Not sure, if he practiced with Iowa in the spring then decided to transfer would he have to then sit out a year? He’s probably not practicing because he’s visiting other school(s). He’s pretty much a recruit at this point.

I think in order to practice he would have to commit. (What happens if he gets injuried while practicing?)
I don’t know if this is true or not, but I would guess they are allowed only a certain number of players on the roster. 105? It could be that they would have to eliminate a player for him to participate, which wouldn’t be cool. I don’t know if that is true, but seems possible.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter until he decides he wants to play at Iowa.

Possible rules aside, It just seems to me spring would be the perfect time for both sides to evaluate if it's a possible fit. My guess is he'd like to stay a Hawkeye. Without changing schools, he'd be able to get an idea of whether he's completely in over his head at this level and the Hawks can see what he can contribute.
