Was ELO better than the Beatles?

no man GIF

Where’s all this influence today? Country seems to have blown up and rock has imploded.
Because teen and YA females love listening to drone country while dressing up and getting drunk and guys go along with it because it leads to sexy time....................

That is literally the sole reason country music has existed and expanded in the last 20 years in the U.S.

Personally I'd put the Beatles over ELO but IMO Jeff Lynne's overall musical talent exceeds any Beatle including Paul or John.
Quite often, talent is one of the lesser factors in rock n' roll. I agree Lynne's talent is enormous, but NOT better than McCartney. How much actual classical music has Lynne recorded?

Popular music today is awful across the board imo. And rock is nowhere near the charts. Seems like whatever influence the Beatles had is gone now as far as what actually sells today.

Good video on what Lynne has done for others as a producer. Video description lists the songs individually. Just read the names in that list.

That is the reason I've been making the argument. Neither Paul or any other Beatle did that work for others.

Clicking play on some of these videos made me realize how lucky I was to grow up with the music from the 90s/2000s/2010s. ELO is pretty mid

This is pretty close to where I'm at. Beatles > ELO but McCartney v Lynne is a different conversation.

There's no denying how many other artists benefitted from Lynne's genius; and McCartney may not have been as willing to share his. Bottom line, for me, is that trying to decide which of the two was the bigger musical genius is impossible, especially given their stylistic differences. We are so fortunate to have been able to experience both of them.

Agreed. But if I said Paul McCartney and Jeff Lynne to my kids, they would only know one name
Valid. Though I usually take those opportunities to educate them about the one they don't know as well. The “musical journey / exploration” that I've had with my kids is one of my most treasured memories as a parent. That's been especially true with my youngest who is 17 now.

That's probably a whole ‘nother thread but I will just add that in the past year, I actually had the opportunity to spend an hour or so with her on this exact topic (ie the underappreciated musical genius of Jeff Lynne). So there's that.

The Beatles came about, existed, and thrived in the absence of ELO,.. the opposite did not occur.

Question: Do you ladies and gentlemen think that there has been a thread like this elsewhere?

Probability is minimal

Just wait for me start a Warren Zevon thread....;)

A thread like this on HROT or just anywhere?

Can't say I recall a similar discussion on these boards.

And I think I'd hate to live in a world where the comparative geniuses of McCartney v Lynne and The Beatles v ELO were not discussed with some frequency.

She's sweet on Wagner
I think she'd die for Beethoven
She loves the way Puccini lays down a tune
And Verdi's always creeping from her room
