WBB opens season with first practice

From the box score, looked like Peschel started but only played 3 minutes. Still in the doghouse, it would seem. Hope she can regain her 6th player form from last season. No minutes for Till again, wonder if her season is basically over.

I was surprised Kali started. She was pulled quickly & played only a minute later in the first half. She didn't even take her warm up off in the second half. Was it just a bad match up or something more? Was nice to see Hannah Stewart get some playing time, she is a more physical player than Kali but just lacks experience.

Coach Jensen said in the post-game interview that they messed up something in the starting line-up that prevented Coley from starting. Maybe the mistake was putting Peschel in the starting line-up sheet?

Watched last night's game vs. Michigan. Overall Iowa played a good game. Both Coley and Gustafson had double doubles, and Tania Davis shot lights out. She also held Flaherty to 7 second half points (though she scored 31 for the game). Buttenham grabbed some big rebounds. I think Iowa should continue to play Coley and Gustafson together. Jennings did not play a good offensive game, but did shoot 8 for 8 at the free throw line in fourth quarter to seal the game. Perhaps Tania can be our 3-point specialist from now on.

A few things: Gustafson gets double and triple teams too easily. She needs to be decisive on her moves. She's best suited around the basket. Disterhoft looks quite slow, which was especially obvious on several occasions when she led a fast break. Coley's baseline jumper is deadly. Buttenham plays hard, but she needs to have better court vision. There's one occasion on a fast break with Buttenham a the point, Disterhoft was wide open for several seconds. Instead of passing to her, she held on to the ball for too long and ended up turning it over.

Megan needs to work on getting her shot over the rim as she's been short several times lately. Ally D is not slow and she has one of the quickest first steps of anyone when taking it to the basket. Jan Jensen said they were going to put Tania on Flaherty in the middle of the second quarter anyway and when they went to the team before they could tell her, Tania told them " I want her". and the first 15 minutes she had 21 and with Tania on her the last 25 minutes, she had 7. Gotta love her.

She ended up with 31, but your point is still good.

As frustrating as Iowa has been lately, at least we're not Northwestern! They returned everyone from last year's tournament team and started 11-1. Then they go 2-9 in the B1G!

Jennings got going in the fourth quarter today, making two huge shots when the team needed them. Perhaps the 8 free throws against Michigan did it! Today Iowa played with confidence, behaving in the way that they knew they were better than Northwestern through all four quarters.

Disterhoft does have a quick step going to the basket. What I wanted to say was that she's not the fastest at running the full court. She gets caught up from behind by the opponents. Jennings and Davis are better in that aspect.

... and today's starting lineup was 2 freshmen, 2 sophomores and a junior, folks :)

The Hawks can be much better. Missed FT (14), some lazy passes, low #pt pct.
But they won. Mostly due to the inside play of Chase and Megan.
Megan needs to get the ball up on her fingertips on the FT. Today she had the ball flat on her palm, was only 3-11. Other than that she played very well, 15 points and 13 rebounds. Chase continues to be money with her face-up game.
Ally was a state track champion in HS. If anyone catches her it is because she is surveying the court as she dribbles.

I really like the double post lineup they have gone to. They are finishing well & they aren't turning the ball over as much as Peschel was/is now even in her limited minutes. With NW lacking height wasn't sure if it would work against them, especially defensively. Will be interesting to see if Chase starts to develop confidence out past the 3 point line, she has a nice looking shot.

Yep on the double post. Not only did we have success with Doolittle and Johnson, but Ohio State did it a few years ago with Lavendar and the other big who was not mobile but was an excellent passer in the high post

The IU team does have some girth...but is still quicker than Iowa. This year's women's team is hard to watch. Poor fundamentals and very little athleticism. I don't think I've ever seen a slower reacting defensive team. And...weak coaching. Another 4th quarter collapse.

Wish Whit would go back to the little 10 ft jump shot that worked so well against Indiana. Instead she (and everyone) else charges (literally & literally) into the lane. We have close to double-digit charges.

Again, Gustafson gets double teamed too easily. And, Disterhoft does not dribble too well. Maybe that's why she looks slow to me, and have so many turnovers through all the games.

Played hard but not well. Peschel & Kastanek 3 min each, and the only reason Peschel got that much was Buttenham picked up her 2nd foul toward the end of the 2nd quarter. Some real head-scratcher turnovers.

They fought hard at least & Lisa is going with those who are producing right now. Kastanek is hard to figure out, she was playing so confidently early then essentially became a turn-over machine who looks lost out there. Peschel is likely digging her way out of the dog house still but wasn't bringing much positive production in the weeks prior to her incident either. Hopefully next years recruiting class, especially the guards are ready to contribute right away... lets hope Tyasha Harris see a great opportunity for playing time and commits!

Team is lacking fight right now. They really miss the intensity that Logic brought for four years. Also, really struggle with focus IMO as they turn the ball over a lot and miss lots of lay ups. Need to get tougher

Very much disagree. They are playing their hearts out.
I agree they lose focus, but that is due to fatigue not lack of desire.

The Future is now! No production from the seniors. Now only ally for the junior class.
Megan gpt a couple of cheap fouls that took her out for most of the first half. Meanwhile Hines for MSU was allowed to shove, hack, push, ram and hold the Iowa posts with now calls.
The officials definitely allowed MSU to win with the way they called it. A bunch of the charge calls were wrong. MSU had two hands on the Iowa players all game long, that is a foul.

I agree Oakhawk. Overall, it appeared MSU was pretty dirty. A lot of cheap shots.

The most obvious problem with this team is what Oak pointed out, two lost classes except for Ally. That's on the coaches. As far as blaming the game on officiating, let's just say that last year's team wouldn't have had nearly as much trouble with the way the refs were calling it.

Does anyone know what the 10-minute holdup near the end of the game was? The refs kept reviewing something and nothing was changed.

Tough to blame the coaches. Two seniors are not playing at least in part due to injuries. Who knows where this team would be had Carly not gotten hurt. And who knows how much of Kali & Lex's drop-off can be blamed on the coaches?

I think at this point Kali and Lex have to play more. Frankly they have been awful, but they've very well in the past and at this point I think we have to go with them and hope for the best. Playing just five or six people is not going to cut it. There's just not enough juice in tank in the fourth quarter. It's especially tough when two are freshmen and two are bigs who need more breaks.

What they lack is athleticism...plain and simple. Peschel and Kastanek struggle because they are slow. The rest of the team plays hard...but they just get out played by much better athletes. And they are fundamentally weak. That is a bad combo. I will say that the future looks bright if they can learn to take care of the basketball and play defense and some of the new recruits are athletic.

I agree with this. Also, they are trying to compete with some very physical teams and we are definitely lacking in brawn on this team.

Sorry, I may have worded that wrong. I'm not saying that they are not playing their hearts out. I'm saying they do not have a player with the intensity of Logic. Till is the player that really comes with fire when she can play but losing that energy she brought is hurting the team too. Logic would never back down from anyone at any time and even if she was not bigger or faster than the player against her, she would play defense to get that stop. I don't see that same intensity from this team at this time. Ali is the focus of every defense and we are just not getting anyone else stepping up on a regular basis to help her (as mentioned in other post, the physical play being allowed is also tough on Ali too). Whitney had a great game at Indiana and the posts had a couple good games last week, but the last two games the posts have struggled. It also hurts that this is not a very good team defensively. I have been a season ticket holder for 25 years so have seen the many different teams over that span too, but this team is laying it on the line every game, but my opinion is they need that one difference maker. Logic was pretty much able to do that for 4 years so it may take a couple of ladies to provide that now.

Just for the record, I think we will see the same thing from the men's team next year. We will not have Sapp to take the best offensive player on the other team or Woody patrolling the middle. We have already seen a glimpse of this in current season when Woody was in foul trouble against Rutgers and Maryland, the defense looked completely different. I am hopeful that this will develop over the summer from someone. Baer and Wagner seem most likely to bring this kind of intensity and energy based upon their play this year.

I knew Kayla Timmerman had an even bigger temper than Till when they were both freshmen, even got a couple technicals during games. She might have become the fireplug of the upper class players. But, she left after just one year. Never learned the reason why she left.

Logic was a once in a lifetime player, but look at who she joined.
Kamille Wahlin- senior
Kelly Krei- senior
Jaime Printy- Junior
Morgan Johnson- Junior
Theairra Taylor- Junior

Add one of our current freshman or sophomores to that mix, and I believe she would look a lot better because any flaws would be covered up. Do I want more success? You bet, but don't judge our younguns by the same yardstick you use on Logic's freshman year. She simply had time to grow. And I am not blaming the current upper-class teammates. Things just don't always work out as hoped.

Not arguing at all about Logic being once in a lifetime player which she was. However, Peschel & Till played with her for 3 years, kastanek and Ali for two years and even Coley and Jennings for a year, but none of those players have taken on this role. But as you noted, it is not a role that every player can or will do as you can't change the stripes on a zebra so not likely to change this in a player. My point, we were spoiled by that type of player but we are missing that dimension now.

I agree 200% with your assessment. I think the leadership role is more critical than any lack of talent and experience. And I want to stress that I am not criticizing anyone for "not being a leader." That is a tough role for an underclassman. And Disterhoft is more a lead by an example than whup 'em into shape.

I think they are really missing Carly Mohns. She was going to enter the starting line-up, then got hurt. "Beef" was the physical type of player they needed. A beast on the boards, good defender, range out to three. I think they would have at least two more wins with a healthy Carly.
I hope the team watched the OSU-MD game the other night (and not the Bachelor) because they would have seen an Ohio State that swarmed Maryland like angry African bees, and took them completely out of their game. The Hawks will have to be ready for full court pressing and swiping at the ball and arms. OSU got away with a lot of contact and Iowa will have to be strong with the ball.

I suspect we'll be seriously overmatched vs OSU. Will be pleased to be proven wrong, however.

Fraid you're right. No amount of preparation will be enough tonight. OSU is too good. I don't think LAST year's Iowa would beat this year's OSU.

This except from hawkeyesports.com bares out some very encouraging statistics...

BIG DIFFERENCE
• Since altering the [starting] lineup to include [both] freshman Megan Gustafson and sophomore Chase Coley, the Hawkeyes have seen an increase in production offensively.
• In the last six games, Iowa has had five players average double figures in scoring rather than three in the previous 19 games. Leading the pack is junior Ally Disterhoft (18.7), followed by Coley (13.3), sophomore Whitney Jennings(12.0), freshman Tania Davis (11.5), and Gustafson (10.7).
• The team has also increased its points per game average from 73.0 to 76.8.
• Gustafson, who has led Iowa in rebounds in five consecutive games, has seen her rebounds per game average spike from 4.8 to 9.0 in the last five games, while Coley has made the jump from 5.0 to 7.0.
• The 6-3 duo accounts for 46 percent of the team's rebounding effort and 31 percent of Iowa's offensive production.
• Gustafson posted three consecutive double-doubles, the first of her career, in the five game span (vs. Michigan on Jan. 28, at Northwestern on Jan. 31, at Indiana on Feb. 4), while Coley logged the third of her career against Michigan on Jan. 28.
• Gustafson added her fourth career double-double in the last five games, led Iowa in rebounds for the five consecutive game (11), and scored in double figures in the fourth time in the last five contests (13).
