Well we didn't grow much

I've never thought Wagner is slow, but I've also never thought he could possibly have the "quickest first step" or whatever Jok said. If Wagner really had such a great first step, Fran is doing a terrible job of putting him in a position to use it productively. I would guess you'd agree with my opinion that Fran is not an idiot.

Wasn't the discussion about future development?

I guess it was. Well, I'm not expecting much of it from Wagner on the offensive end. He has the size and passes the eye test, but just doesn't have much of an offensive game for whatever reason. I'd love for him to be a 7 ppg / 9 rpg type. He won't get enough minutes to do it though... rounding up, he has 5 ppg and 4 rpg this year to date, and his big scoring games came against some bad teams, so I'd guess his averages will fall from here.

I'm not trashing him, I believe he can be a defense / hustle guy. I'd just prefer to see him on the court with scorers since I'm not viewing him as much of a scorer himself. And if he has this awesome first step, he needs to learn how to use it soon.

I think I've seen him use it a few times, but it's been against big dudes and mostly through their chest (thinking Burton from ISU and Haas). I could definitely see him develop a two dribble drive after suckling post defenders out a bit.

In order for that first step to work, you have to keep defenders honest with an outside shot. He doesn't have a jump shot, so it's probably not worth entertaining.

Actually the quicker your first step the less you need a jump shot to set it up.

Not that i think it matters with Wagner, he doesn't have the ball handling to even think about blowing by people.

What? I don't think so. Players will just give you a step or 2 and dare you to shoot from outside. A quick first step doesn't do you much good if your defender is waiting for you at the elbow or 15' from the basket. That's scouting report 101.

Its an inverse relationship, the slower footed you are the more you need a jumper to keep defenders honest.

Theres guys that are fast enough to still blow by a defender even if you play 2 or 3 steps off. Derrick Rose won mvp without much of a jumper.

Tony Parker was another who dominated without much of a jumper.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.
