Welp….

When did the rumor of this all start and did anyone representing IA reach out to DT or did we just assume he would let us know if he wanted to be a hawk?

Does OSU have more money than us? We had to look just as attractive if not more to DT.

Fortune favors the bold

And OKST AD appears to be a basketball guy. I think no joke the early discussion on this board kicked this off. Then the Gadson tweet. Some boosters at OKST must've been paying attention and made the correct decision to not hand the keys to Coleman Scott but instead pursue DT. I wonder if John Smith gave input as well. Would be really interesting to know the behind the scenes details of how that decision got made and how the AD was informed and who he was consulting. Home run move by OKST. Disappointing for Iowa, but hopefully OKST can help chip away at the PSU dynasty.

Can Iowa at least make some moves at assistant coach?

Answer to all of this.......no

OKST had the advantage that John Smith was retiring. Iowa hiring DT would've required firing Tom Brands when he has years left on his contract. That would've been an extremely bold (but potentially legendary) move by the new AD at Iowa. And she's already stirred the pot by firing Brian Ferentz. I would have liked to see it tbh, but don't blame her for not. I just hope this lights a fire under Tom's ass and he makes the necessary changes to turn Iowa around.

DT is a home run hire and I expect him to win a lot in Stillwater. Congrats to the Cowboys 🤢

But don't worry, guys! Just remember, TNT are making changes - they just aren't visible lol.

While OKST is out there hitting home runs, I still haven't heard an interview from Tom since the season ended other than a 3 minute one after nationals and the new facility "tour". Not even anything post trials. No recruits landed. No portal landings. Is there any good news in sight?

As someone has said they are both too stubborn to think their way won’t work. They are not going to change. And our concrete bunker is not going to out recruit DT at OSU if they put their wrestling room in a barn. Imagine the palace of a new facility they promised and how much yearly OIL money he is guaranteed to have to use similar to the 5 million a year NIL Callipari has to use going to coach ball at Arkansas.

I think this is more orchestrated by the money than the AD. Nichols should have made a call, even if brief.

No.

Everyone acting like Taylor walks on water and parted the Red Sea. Guy has no coaching experience and never recruited. Let’s just wait and see. Could be a home run, could be a flop. IWC should stop creaming itself.
He's a big name Olympian who is young and is the shiny new toy. He's worked in and been around the best room in the country for over a decade and coached legit kids at M2. This is a BIG job, no doubt. However, He's going to be able to relate to younger kids and recruit. If you think otherwise, you're nuts. He's going to make a splash on the trail and, if he's smart, he got assurances that he'll have NIL resources to do it.

I agree. I doubt the AD was up to speed on this without some serious pressure and input from wrestling people and wealthy boosters. The AD made a great decision though. Coleman Scott was the safe pick, but the wrong one.

I'd love for Spencer to be on staff, but Iowa needs to bring in outside blood. The program is inbred and anemic. Even the HWC has failed to bring in any meaningful talent from outside the program.
Yep, would honestly be best for Spencer to train at another RTC for 2025-2028 to get some of a different perspective before returning (or 2029-2032 depending on when he wants to coach full-time).

When Spencer is done competing he can coach the HWC under new Iowa Coaches.

Spencer has stated many times he prefers freestyle anyway. This seems like the ideal outcome. Let him compete until he wants to hang it up. Make him HWC coach. Hire an Iowa head coach from outside.

Spencer Lee will compete for as long as he wants and he will be Iowas next head coach. I feel this plan has been well known within the University and those who call the shots. He’s got the right personality and respect from all involved in the sport across the nation.

So wait with years of getting worse? Minimum 4 years?

Spencer will not stay at Iowa if they fire the brands.

Can the program survive waiting and by the time he is done what will be left for him to want?

Nice only 5-6 more years of poor recruiting, no offense, cement feet and zero scrambling ability. 🔥

Whether head coach or an assistant we need Dake, Nolf, Snyder, Zain, or hell I would take Askren. We need a name for this generation of recruits to relate to. TNT aren’t it anymore. Time for Beth to earn her salary and cause a shake up like she did with Brian Ferentz.
How much money did Brands just convince boosters to hand over for a new facility? That is clout. Brands isn't going anywhere, and none of the people you mentioned are going to come in and be an assistant for him. I personally don't think he would want any of them anyway. He wants assistants who buy into the way he does things, and honestly that makes sense. You don't want a conflicted message or a power struggle. You either have to get rid of him (not happening soon) or deal with the crappy coaches he feels comfortable working with.

Get rid of Dan Dennis put Terry as HWC coach until Spencer is done then to become coach or he becomes the HWC coach. But this program doesn’t have 4 years of not making any changes in the staff. If we do it will be us in 10-15th place at NCAA’s. Recruits and families see all the turmoil in the program, if they don’t see some type of changes occurring they are not coming here or sending their kid here.

While I understand “buying” into the “Brand’s ” style he preaches but hasn’t gotten us far lately. Maybe those guys listed might not want to come but can’t hurt to ask. Especially considering all of them used “their” style to beat everyone on the team with the “Brand’s” style. Maybe it’s “their” style that is now working in this era.

I'm really curious to know what went down behind the scenes with all this, but I'm sure we will never know. Seems like the iron was hot for the striking with DT, but all we have to go on is conjecture and Twitter rumors. DT is not proven as. D1 coach, but taking a big chance on him makes sense as much as any other possible top name. I have not been happy with Iowa's results lately but not calling from TnT's heads just yet either. Things do need to change at some level though, and soon.

One name that doesn't get brought up very often is Jake Varner. 4x finalist, 2x champ, world bronze, Oly gold in 2012. He's a California native which might help with that pipeline, especially with Sunkist shutting down. Upper weight expert we could use. Late 30s I think. And PSU assistant and now recent head of NLWC. I would have thought him leaving Happy Valley was a pipe dream, but I never thought Taylor would leave either.

Also J'Den Cox for sure. He would be a great addition to the HWC.

Wouldn’t it be funny if Coleman Scott came to Iowa and took half the team with him? Tom should try to get Coleman as his number 2, he must feel so betrayed right now. All in all, this is good for college wrestling and Okie State. David is a great wrestler, coach and ambassador.
Something tells me it would be very small list of people.

He didn't have any coaching experience. 🙄

Terry or Dake to HWC, Cox for Telford, Coleman to Terry’s spot if Terry to HWC. . lol
