What are you paying for tamales?

I love tamales and wouldn’t hate the idea of making some if I had a free weekend to put them together. However, I think some local families in almost every town sell some through friends/family connections, and even through FB marketplace.

Any of you pick up some tamales through local households? Road side stands? Grocery stores?

What kind of cash are you dropping on tamales?

We have a store in North Liberty that sells them on the weekend. I have been meaning to get over there to get some but still haven't found the time or just plain forgot to do it. Love a good tamale!

Weird. I just saw a white chick on Facebook selling tamales on Facebook a couple days ago. Apparently she's had an order-based business selling them for 2 years. Forget the rate though. I thought it was an oddly specific single item only operation for a non Hispanic person to be doing. Didn't know that was a weird niche thing many people do.
Wish we could do more cool stuff around the house but the step kids won't eat stuff like that. They're 50 percent Mexican (their biological is literally a full fledged anchor baby born here after his parents came here illegally) and won't eat anything but generic taco meat on a tortilla and some cheese. Weirdest damn thing.

They are insanely expensive. I paid 42 dollars for one dozen.

I pay $20/dozen from my tamale connect. Doesn't make them often and limits how many she makes because they are a pain to make (or so I've been told).

I believe I have only had tamales once and that was at Portillo's as a little warm up for my Italian beef sandwich and my Chicago dog and crinkle fries. I know, I'm fat. It made me not interested in trying them at my favorite Mexican restaurants, but I'm guessing Portillo's aren't very good.

Mine (white guy) are free. My ex wife's(who is Mexican) Gma always texts me instead of her saying she has tamales or food because unlike my ex I went out of my way to learn Spanish during the relationship so I coukd speak a little bit with her Grandmother.

I just always seem to forget the part where her Gma tells me to drop some off to my ex.
