What We Learned

1. This team has some serious grit
2. Our O-Line has switched from run blocking to pass blocking strength, needs to keep improving
3. Our receivers can get open, but MUST catch the ball/make plays
4. Our defensive line CAN get to the QB....
5. While young, our DB's proved that with adequate pressure on QB they can hang with quality receivers

According to @hawkeyegamefilm on twitter:

Some interesting numbers from PSU game: PSU blitzed ~40% of time; stunted/blitzed nearly every 1st down of 1st H; hyper-aggressive D

Tough to run on that...

Agree on most points. Except I think that our O-line IS good a BOTH run and pass blocking. They just can't run block against 9 in the box. It's a math issue. We need to throw more, which we can be successful at with Stanley.

Yup this x1000. We can't run block with 5 guys vs 9. I mean PSU was coming hard on 1st and 2nd down. We didn't run a single PA or screen to get them to back off. Hard to run in that situation.

I think our Line will get stronger on both sides.

It took us awhile (too long?), but we adjusted. I think sometimes our staff is intentionally slow to adjust or adapt when we're still right in the game (ie only behind 5-0). As such, they are content to go in at half & be more clear with the players about the exact changes we are going to make, given the blitzes they were seeing.

Iowa has a TE and FB to add to the Oline blocking we should be able to run some and PA the rest.Iowa has the tools to get fix.Penn St was messing with Stanley big time and he was confuse a lot but that will get better

2 questions:

* why didn't we adjust until the 2nd half?
* what do you think we will see from Mich State? Won't they do the same thing since Iowa likes to run so much on 1st and 2nd downs?

but shouldn't KF tell BF to change things up in the 1st half and run some pass plays that are effective when you have 9 defenders in the box?

agreed. Stanley will get better. just hope we stay free of injuries....

- IMO the piss poor field position in the 1st half made it appear as though IA wasn't adjusting
- I'm sure Mich St will try to emulate Penn St's strategy. I hate to say it, but maybe now would be a good time to throw some of those GDGD very short passes, which would hopefully stop the safeties from coming up to the LOS every 1st down.

Hayden was always making the adjustments at half because he felt the other team could fix his adjustments at half if he try it during the 1st half and I think this is the approach KF uses

All good points ... Go Hawks!

(I'm really excited to watch AJ continue to develop. Holy cow this kid has raw talent and will only get better. Scary to think how good this kid is going to be) ...

While our Dline did play exceptionally well, almost all of their impact plays came against the RT who was struggling mightily. Perhaps we will see the Dline breakout again, however, I would temper expectations until we see it happen consistently.
