The White House is calling on former vice president Mike Pence to apologize for “offensive and inappropriate” jokes he made about Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s parental leave and about postpartum depression.

While speaking at the Gridiron dinner Saturday, an annual black-tie gathering of Washington politicians, journalists and public figures, Pence joked that nationwide transportation woes were prompted by Buttigieg taking two months of “maternity leave” to adopt newborn twins in 2021 with his husband.

“When Pete’s two children were born, he took two months’ maternity leave whereupon thousands of travelers were stranded in airports, the air traffic system shut down, and airplanes nearly collided on our runways,” Pence said.

“Pete is the only person in human history to have a child and everyone else gets postpartum depression,” Pence added.

In a statement Monday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre blasted Pence for making a homophobic joke about Buttigieg, who is the first openly gay Cabinet secretary in U.S. history, and for using postpartum depression “as a punchline.”
“The former vice president’s homophobic joke about Secretary Buttigieg was offensive and inappropriate, all the more so because he treated women suffering from postpartum depression as a punchline,” Jean-Pierre said. “He should apologize to women and LGBTQ people, who are entitled to be treated with dignity and respect.”

Buttigieg’s husband called Pence out on Monday as well, addressing the former vice president in a Twitter post that included a photo of the transportation secretary holding one of their newborns in the hospital.

“An honest question for you … after your attempted joke this weekend,” Chasten Buttigieg tweeted. “If your grandchild was born prematurely and placed on a ventilator at two months old — their tiny fingers wrapped around yours as the monitors beep in the background — where would you be?”

Pence, who has been exploring a run for president, has not publicly addressed his remarks since the dinner, but his former chief of staff, Marc Short, doubled down on them Monday, scoffing at the White House’s call for an apology.
“The Biden administration should spare America the faux outrage,” Short tweeted early Monday afternoon.
He noted that Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who also spoke at the Gridiron dinner, had joked Saturday night about yearning for “the old days” when “Jews did all the work.”

“The hypocrisy is especially rich,” Short added. “The White House would be wise to focus less on placating the woke police and focus more on bank failures, planes nearly colliding in midair, train derailments, and the continued supply chain crisis.”
(Blinken was born to Jewish parents and is the stepson of a Holocaust survivor.)

Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., and Pence, the state’s former governor, have previously clashed over Pence’s record on LGBTQ rights. During his run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, Buttigieg criticized Pence for not explicitly denouncing conversion therapy. On the campaign trail, Buttigieg also often cited his ability to win reelection as mayor of South Bend “as a gay dude in Mike Pence’s Indiana” as evidence of his political appeal.
The nonprofit group Human Rights Campaign once rated Pence “the worst vice president for LGBTQ people in modern history,” noting his long record of voting against LGBTQ equality as a member of Congress and then for supporting Trump administration policies that undermined LGBTQ rights.

Liberals are so much fun.

Ummm…that’s pretty funny.
Really?
It’s really a stupid thing for a public figure to say publicly. But...I guess it shows that ol’Mike is just one of the Boyz.

Why is it stupid? As soon as he had a kid we had a string of instances that Pete caught hell for. It was the exact correct joke that wasn't demeaning and only went after how well he's doing his job. Like every other political joke ever. I guess Obama shouldn't have made those 10,000 jokes at the correspondence dinner about Trump and Bush, eh? You must have been pissed about that.

Can't wait to find out the difference.

Stupid? Sure....something to get outraged about...no.
Pence can say whatever he wants...it’s a free country. It is still “stupid” to say shit like this being who he is and knowing what he wants to do. That’s all.
I Am not voting for the sumbitch, come he’ll or high water. Seems strange to ne that a self-confessed Christian like Pence finds it necessary to talk like this of others. Of course, Penske is a member of the Capitalist Christian Church....and that congregation has some unique ideas of what a Christian should be.

Are you really asking why joking about hospitalized kids is stupid? Really? On the heels of Dobbs? This is your angle?

Key thing here is “joke” everybody is aware it’s a joke… laugh, don’t laugh… whatever but it’s a joke move on.
“Joke”...sure. But “a joke” in bad taste. Said in the privacy of a locker room, ok...said where there are media gathered....expect some blow-back.
He has every right to say whatever he wants...just don’t act surprised when folks criticize what he said.

Are you that stupid to think the joke quoted was about hospitalized kids? Here's the joke again. I'll give you a chance to re-assess:

Making a joke about a dad having post-partum is homophobic?

My biggest issue with the commentary is the lazy political point Pence thinks he’s making, when really all his point is is an implicit condemnation of taking personal family time. Paternity leave shouldn’t be a partisan issue.

Who is making it a partisan issue?
Sure seems like Pence is:

While speaking at the Gridiron dinner Saturday, an annual black-tie gathering of Washington politicians, journalists and public figures, Pence joked that nationwide transportation woes were prompted by Buttigieg taking two months of “maternity leave” to adopt newborn twins in 2021 with his husband.

He lays out a clear path to transportation woes being “prompted” by Pete taking 2 months of leave…which of course implies that he should not have taken the leave.

Yeah I dont care about that.

It was just a crack.

But lets not forget.

Do you think the joke would have been different if he went on vacation for two weeks instead of paternity leave. The inference was about him "being off the job" not paternity leave.

The joke wouldn’t have worked if it was just a vacation. Also, paid parental leave has different rules than vacation does….but either way, Pence was clearly implying that Pete shouldn’t have taken time off and/or that it was his leave that directly caused the issues.

I don't think that is what he was implying at all and by you think that is your Team Blue blinders getting in the way. It is ok to take them off from time to time.

This is certainly not the biggest deal in the world and Pence is not a guy I would vote for anyway (I appreciate him being less MAGA, but he’s the type that brings too much religion into politics for my taste)….but if he’s not implying that, then what’s the point of his comment? He literally said that the transportation woes were “prompted by” the time off.….so not sure what else to read here.

You know it was a joke right? Hes a boring evangelical Christian male, he's not funny. He was trying to be funny. He was not being critical of Pete. This was his version of a joke he would tell at a roast. Why get so worked about by the Biden Administration is what people are wondeirng?
