Edit: This is intended to be a prediction poll. Not what should happen, or what you want to happen, but what you think will happen.

I see three possibilities:

1. He rebuilds with a new OC; Kirk 5.0. (are we on 4.0 yet? I've lost count)
2. He finds a friend as a stopgap for a couple years until he's ready to retire.
3. He takes his ball and goes home.

I don’t see it now. It sure doesn’t seem like this is Brian making the call….and that tells me Kirk probably isn’t on board with it.

There are a lot of changes going on right now in CFB….and I just am not sure Kirk is going to want to try to reboot at this point.

"The landscape of college football has changed; I have been struggling with ideals that I don't align with and feel that this would be the right opportunity for me to step aside and let a new face lead this program. <Snort, smirk> I have spent the majority of my life with football and feel that it is time to relax a little (if you will) and spoil my grand kids. Once a hawk (tears) always a hawk."

I voted yes, but I think it's really close.

On one hand, I think he's pissed about this and I could see him retiring in protest.

On the other, he has a lot of pride and I'm not sure he's willing to go out like that.

I've been predicting this is KF's last season since September. And I think he made the decision a while ago.

In other words, he's not going to leave just because BF was let go. It was already in the works.

No way he was leaving with Brian struggling.

It was his priority to right the ship for his son.

Zero chance he would have left him. Zero.

Explain - "zero chance he would have left him"? Like, KF wouldn't retire and leave Brian behind somehow?

Anyway, I think we are going to disagree on this one.

Kirk is the ultimate survivor. He survived big controversies in the past, but now is going to quit in huff? Please. Have you watched this guy for the last 25 years?

Kirk is something like 13 wins from the "Most Wins as a Big Ten Head Coach" that they note during broadcasts. He is 1.4 good seasons from getting his winning percentage from .596 to the .600 required for the college football hall of fame.

I don't see any chance he voluntarily leaves. And with his contract, I don't see any chance he is fired.

He has stated he has no hobbies and his dream "retirement" is being an OL coach. He isn't leaving football short of a health issue with him or Mary or just outright being fired.

He had most losses as a Big Ten Head Coach nailed down a long time ago.

Maybe He wanted it not to become news till after the Season and the recruiting Class was all signed ? Maybe He wanted to have it announced in a different fashion and from a different source or maybe He wanted to be the one to announce that BF had accepted an new Coaching position at - insert Your job here. Kirk has always controlled the narrative which is probably why He is not happy with this.

I think the timing of the Brian decision is, in part, to give Kirk time to ponder his options.

It's a smart move.
I think it's designed to clear the dance floor for KF to retire at the end of the season.

I could certainly be wrong, but the timing for KF to retire is also pretty good.

#2 shouldn't even be an option.
I understand the sentiment, but in reality he’s still the head coach and should have full authority to make the decision for the next hire (aside from family of course). If he wants a pawn to run the offensive scheme of his choosing, honestly that’s his purgative as the coach. If the AD is not ok with that, then the move needed to be about moving on from KF - not Brian.

I don’t think the issue was about the offensive system or style though. I think it is more about lack of player development (especially QB and OL), lack of fit in recruiting, lack of play action, and telling tendencies with formations and personnel.

Side note - does Barnett get a free pass now? The OL has been well below Iowa standards and a major (if not primary) contributor.

To me, a lot depends if this was a planned announcement, or if this was an internal meeting that was leaked (as has been rumored).

If planned, I think a major reason is to stem the avalanche of negative press Iowa was receiving on a weekly basis. Beth's #1 priority is to protect the brand and this announcement helps with that.

Her #2 priority is to give her coaches as much autonomy as possible. It is stepping on Kirk's toes to announce that his OC will not be retained, but it was necessary due to priority #1. It's full on meddling in his program to fire his OC mid-season, and creating a reputation as a meddling AD could inhibit her ability to attract top coaching talent in the future.

Good

Why wouldn't he?
Do we know the substance of the conversations between Kirk, Brian, Beth, maybe even the university president? No we don't. You don't either. If, as has been reported, Brian stormed out of the meeting talking about his future, did Kirk say he was going to retire at the end of the season?

My bet is this is a package deal allowing father and son to leave at the end of the season with some degree of dignity, particularly on Kirk's part.
