Similar to the old would u rather win the NIT or lose in the first round of the NCAA question in hoops (btw I always say lose in first round, cuz no one cares about the NIT)

In this case, I would have to say it depends on how bad the CFP loss was. Being in the national conversation for the rest of December would b awesome, but it would all b nullified IMHO if we got waxed in the playoff game. But if we fought hard and lost close, I would definitely vote for that option.

Either way, getting the rose takes a lot of the sting out of the msu loss. And win the rose and the pain of Saturday night becomes nothing but a distant memory imo.

You can only answer that question accurately with 100% certainty if you are looking in retrospect.

We were asking that question as Buckeye fans before the Conference Championship when Barrett was injured and before we knew what type of performance Jones would have in the playoffs.

Of course in retrospect, we were glad the way things worked out. And that doesn't happen if the Buckeyes went to the Rose Bowl instead.

I do know that Wisconsin and MSU looked pretty happy after their Bowl Games last season.

Have a great trip,to Pasadena for those going out and good luck to the Hawkeyes.

Go Big 10!

CFP, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is future recruiting. West coast games do almost nothing to further the future of Iowa football.

i would rather win the rose bowl than lose in the semis. it would be great to win the last game on a big stage with much of the team back for another year.

Beings 3 monts ago I was just praying to get a bowl birth this year. I had no expectations and honestly didn't think Iowa would win more than 7 games.

Yeah it sucks to lose and not be in the final 4, but the Rose Bowl is the Granddaddy of them all. I don't care what people say, to play in that stadium on that kind of stage is unreal. Its been something like 20years since Iowa has been there.

I'll take a Rose Bowl win any day of the week. As a kid in the midwest that is what you grow up wanting and now these hawks have a chance to make it happen.

Was asked last week (scenario of losing first round.) I said winning the Rose Bowl x1000. Making the finals would be different.

Have to agree with this. Not being in the CFP = just another bowl game......
I think that's being a little harsh, but I would say that a CFP loss is head and shoulders the better situation.

Hayden Fry's Rose Bowl teams:
'81 - 8-3
'86 - 10-1
'91 - 8-3

Under current structure, only the '86 team would have been a potential Final Four CFP contender (Iowa was #4 and Michigan was #5 and Iowa beat Michigan that year head-to-head). Therefore, any contention that the current playoffs are what the Rose Bowl "used to be" is quite misguided. Iowa in '81 and '91 would be exactly where Stanford sits today. Rose Bowl eligible as the conference champ but not in the Final Four playoffs.

Honorable Mention: Fry's '90 team went 10-1 but ended up in Holiday Bowl.

Notable? Fry's teams went 0-3-1 in those bowl games.

Ferentz's "BCS/CFP" bowl teams:
'01 - 10-1
'09 - 10-2
'15 - 12-1

Honorable Mention: Ferentz's '03 team went 9-2 and ended up in Capital One Bowl.

Notable? Ferentz's teams are 2-1 thus far in those bowl games.

EDIT: Wrong thread. Sorry.

I would rather lose a thousand semifinal games than win a single Rose Bowl. A CFP berth would be another month of the impossible dream being alive. It would raise the profile of the program in a huge, gigantic way.

The Rose Bowl is an exhibition game. A really nice one, but an exhibition nonetheless.

The way I feel right now, I just wish the Hawkeyes won the Big Ten Championship game. Everything else is nice, but the loss of that opportunity stings. I seriously wonder if the team can bounce back from it, so given scenarios, I'd rather Iowa be undefeated as long as possible.

I would much rather make the playoffs then make the Rose Bowl because the dream of a NC is still in play.
But to the original question, I would rather have a win in the Rose Bowl than a loss in a semifinal game.

But the question includes losing in the playoffs, so no, the chance at a national title is not in play. Not knowing what will happen, yes, of course you take the playoff, but in this scenario there is no chance to even make the finals. Again, the scenario given had no chance of a national title. That makes winning the Rose Bowl a no brainer, and you likely end the season ranked higher as well.

Birky, agreed. That was what I was trying to say.

Would you rather feel like you did after Saturday's game for a year or flyin high all offseason cause of a big win? Winning the rose bowl would do wonders for our team heading into next year and beyond. Look what it did for Michigan State. They still haven't come down since winning. Just keep stacking blocks.

Losing on the semi-finals would mean a B1G Championship. Much more important than winning in the RB.

This.

Winning that CCG would have been one of Iowas best wins ever.

The national conversation will now revolve exclusively around the 4 teams who's seasons are still alive.

No one cares about the rest but the fans of those particular teams.

This isn't even a question IMO.

Conference championship > Roes Bowl.

That's is IMO the no brainer. Ferentz has never won an outright championship.

You only get to the Roes Bowl by losing.

I agree with the off-season momentum argument but long term the CFP would mean we would have won the Big 10 championship and that would have been huge.

I believe we will be in the CFP next year. This year all we can do is put everything we got into winning the Rose Bowl. Something we have not done in 57 years. If we pull this off, and I think we will, all of us will be happy and proud of the 2015 Hawkeyes.

Can't bring myself to say I'd ever prefer to lose any particular game instead of a win in a different game, but I'd still prefer to have been in the CFP. Big Ten championships are obviously very tough to come by, so I would have taken the championship and let the chips fall where they may in the CFP.

You are in the National conversation for 26 days with the playoffs. With the Rose Bowl you are thought of an afterthought except for NYD. So give me the playoffs.

This

However had we made the CFP and lost in semis I would then rather have won Rose Bowl. Like someone said this question cannot be answered without hindsight

This is an absolute no-brainer. Win the Big Ten Title, remain undefeated and take a shot at winning a National Title. Everything else sucks in comparison (no need to expound further).

Well, since winning CFP is impossible, I will choose winning the Rose. The idea that winning the Rose bowl is equivalent to the NIT is so f'ing retarded that I think you should be kicked in the balls at least a dozen times. By an East German speed skater. Who is wearing "her" skates. Douchebag.

There is obviously some romanticism that not every will appreciate about the Rose Bowl, but I have a feeling that when I am watching the Hawkeyes forming the Swarm at the Rose Bowl I won't be thinking "Man, I wish we would have lost to Alabama yesterday."
