Iowa Women's Basketball Star Ranking

Decided to look at this tear's team and what the future might hold for the Hawk women.

Our current team as a lot of star power in addition to Caitlin. I'll break it down.

Starters:
Clark - 5 star - ranked 4 - 5 in the class
Martin - 3 star - no top 100 rank
Marshall - 3 star - no top 100 rank
Stuelke - 4 star - ranked #45 in 2022 class (may have been higher if she hadn't committed so early)
Affolter - 4 star - ranked # 48 in 2021 class

Certainly talent there but also shows Iowa's coaches ability to develop players.

Next five in:
Feurbach - 4 star - # 71
O'Grady - 4 star - # 92 in 2021 class
McCabe - 4star - #89 in 2021 class
Ediger - 4 star - #47 in 2021 class
Gyamfi - 4 star - #76 in 2022 class

The 2021 and 2022 classes had a top 20 rank
Unfortunately the 2023 class was small and with Jone's injuries and now Johnson Etienne's knee they haven't contributed on the court. You certainly can't measure the motivation the players get from watching Ava's work ethic though.

The incoming 2024 class is ranked # 9 nationally. Unfortunately - USC, UCLA, Oregon and Michigan are ranked higher. I like this class alot.

Heiden - 4 star - #40 ranked center at 6' 5"
Guyton - 4 star - #58 ranked PG
Mallegni - 4 star - #64 ranked PF at 6' 1"
Stremlow - 4 star - #91 ranked PG
Levin - not ranked but Iowa player of the year. Reminds me alot of Affolter

Add in our current 2025 commits:

Deal - 5 star - 6' guard - #12
Houston - 4 star 5' 11" wing - #36

Targets:
Skinner - 5 star PG - #10 rank
McGaughy - 5 star PF - #15 rank
Speiser - 5 star SG - #20 rank
Jernigan - 4 star SG/WF - #45 rank
Hays - 3 star center - unranked

If 2025 can fill out with Hays and one more 5 star, the stars will align for many more years of the Hawks flying high.

Go Hawks!

LSU coach Kim Mulkey threatens to sue The Washington Post over rumored hit piece: 'I'm fed up'

"Reporters who give a megaphone to a one-sided embellished version of things aren’t trying to tell the truth. They’re trying to sell newspapers and feed the click machine. This is exactly why people don’t trust journalists and the media anymore. It’s these kinds of sleazy tactics and hatchet jobs that people are just tired of. I’m fed up."

Philip Haney: Obama Homeland Security Shut Down Probe into Islamic Jihadis

Philip Haney, the former employee–now whistleblower of the Department of Homeland Security–writes about his experience at the federal anti-terror department, which he claims has been hampered by political correctness from the Obama Administration.
From The Hill:

There are terrorists in our midst and they arrived here using legal means right under the noses of the federal law enforcement agencies whose mission is to stop them. That is not due to malfeasance or lack of effort on the part of these officers; it is due to the restrictions placed on them by the Obama administration.

I was a firsthand witness to how these policies deliberately prevented scrutiny of Islamist groups. The two San Bernardino jihadists, Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik, may have benefited from the administration’s closure of an investigation I initiated on numerous groups infiltrating radicalized individuals into this country.

f the investigation had continued and additional links been identified and dots connected, we might have given advance warning of the terrorist attack in San Bernardino. The combination of Farook’s involvement with the Dar Al Uloom Al Islamiyah Mosque and Malik’s attendance at al-Huda would have indicated, at minimum, an urgent need for comprehensive screening. It could also have led to denial of Malik’s K-1 visa or possibly gotten Farook placed on the No Fly list.

But after more than six months of research and tracking; over 1,200 law enforcement actions and more than 300 terrorists identified; and a commendation for our efforts; DHS shut down the investigation at the request of the Department of State and DHS’ own Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Division.

Comparing Iowa’s rotation to the top two teams in the Big Ten…

I think most, if not all, will agree this is a major down year for the Big Ten. So, comparing Iowa’s rotation to the only two Big Ten teams in the Top 25 (Purdue and Illinois), whom do you see on Iowa’s regular or somewhat regular rotation who could start or log 10+ minutes for either Purdue or Illinois?

I’ll go first.

Start:

No Way Reaction GIF by Hyper RPG

Log 10+ minutes:

Freeman: Possibly
Krikke: No
PMac: Lol
Dix: Slim chance
Perkins: Slim chance
Payton: Possibly
Dembele: No
Bowen: No
Brauns: No
Harding: No
Pryce: No

Did I miss anyone?

That means I got 4/11 who have been in Iowa’s rotation with just a chance to log 10+ minutes. A chance.

7/11 guys wouldn’t have a prayer.

Yikes.

Colorado .....

could be better than last year. Return four starters, we return three. Replaced the one starter with a very good three point shooter from Michigan. They now have two very good perimeter shooters and a strong inside game. Hawks will have there hands full. We need some solid minutes from Addie in this game. And Gabbie and Kate need to shoot better from the perimeter. Go Hawks!

Joe Biden’s Superfans Think the Rest of America Has Lost Its Mind

Bewildered by tepid enthusiasm for a president they see as transformative, these Democrats occupy a lonely place in U.S. politics: “I feel like I’m the only one.”

Andrea Russell is a fixture on Earp Street, the quiet strip of rowhouses in South Philadelphia where she has lived for 45 years. In the afternoons, neighbors come and go from her living room as her 16-year-old cat, George, sits perched above a television that is usually tuned to cable news.
Ms. Russell, a 77-year-old retired legal secretary, thinks President Biden would fit right in. “He’d come on by Earp Street,” she said. “I could picture going up to him and saying, ‘Hi, Joe.’ I can see him here.” She identifies with him, she said, and admires his integrity and his record. She also loves his eyes.

Her friend, Kathy Staller, also 77, said she was as eager to vote for Mr. Biden as she was for Barack Obama in 2008. “I am excited,” she said. “I hope more people feel the way I do.”
Ms. Russell and Ms. Staller are ardent, unreserved supporters of Mr. Biden — part of a small but dedicated group of Democratic voters who think that he is not merely the party’s only option against Donald J. Trump but, in fact, a great, transformative president who clearly deserves another four years in office.

They occupy a lonely position in American politics.

Mr. Biden, 81, has never inspired the kind of excitement that Mr. Obama did, and he is not a movement candidate, in contrast to his likely 2024 rival, Mr. Trump, who is 77. Historically, he has been far more skilled at connecting one to one on the campaign trail than energizing crowds with soaring oratory.

But his poll numbers have been especially rough lately. A New York Times/Siena College poll released this weekend found that just 43 percent of respondents would vote for him if the election were today, compared with 48 percent for Mr. Trump.

Forty-five percent of Democratic primary voters surveyed said they thought he should not be the party’s nominee — and just 23 percent of primary voters said they were enthusiastic about Mr. Biden being the Democratic nominee. That stands in contrast to the nearly half of Republican primary voters who said they were enthusiastic about Mr. Trump’s candidacy.

The Biden campaign dismissed the latest numbers over the weekend, pointing to strong Democratic performances in recent special elections and highlighting Republican divisions and cash problems.

Mr. Biden also has a slice of voters who adore him. They wave off concerns about his age and bristle at the suggestion that anyone else could meet the moment.

In interviews with nearly two dozen of these Democrats — many of them older, and most of them women — they sounded by turns beleaguered, bewildered and protective.

This is a rematch from last year's Sweet Sixteen, but for much of this year it didn't seem like it would be possible for Iowa and Colorado to face each other so early in the NCAA Tournament. In the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee's first Top 16 reveal on February 15, Colorado was ranked as a 1-seed. The Buffaloes were 20-4 at that point, with wins over 1-seed USC, 2-seed Stanford, and 3-seed LSU. They seemed more likely to compete with Iowa for a 1-seed than to miss out on hosting the first two rounds.

The problem for the Buffaloes is that their schedule got extremely difficult at the end of the season. They had three games in a row at 5-seed Utah, at USC, and at 2-seed UCLA. Colorado lost all three of those games and ended up going 1-5 to end the regular season. The Buffaloes did win a game in the Pac-12 Tournament, but then lost to 3-seed Oregon State in the quarterfinals.

In the NCAA Tournament, Colorado advanced to the Sweet Sixteen with an 86-72 victory over 12-seed Drake and a 63-50 victory over 4-seed Kansas State in Manhattan last weekend.

Overall, Colorado has had an up and down season. The Buffaloes have shown they can beat some of the best teams in the nation, but struggled late in the year, particularly away from home. On Saturday, they'll play on a neutral court, but they will be more than 1,800 miles from campus -- and dealing with a very pro-Iowa crowd.

Help with planning family trip to Japan (spring break)

Haven't done anything overseas with the family, and Japan likely has some unique considerations, so any tips or hints people have to help me avoid problems and maximize the expensive trip would be welcome.

Details:
- March 2020 trip (spring break)
- 2 adults, 3 kids (girls 13-17)
- looking to get passport work all submitted in next 2 weeks
- kids familiar with Japanese anime cartoons, enjoy culture, nature more than physical sight seeing
- 7-9 day trip probably
- can afford a bit of a spend, but no need to get crazy :)

Questions:
  • Which airlines and departure cities would you recommend (from central iowa)?
  • Which city or cities should we stay in? (wife gets anxious on trips, so simple may be better)
  • Can we pay a student guide to make getting around easier and who can relate to our girls?
  • Any chance our girls could spend an afternoon in a Japanese high school you think?
  • Gifts we could bring to share with anyone on the trip?
  • Currency recommendation / cards?
  • Electronic notes of any kind?
  • Social customs we should be aware of?
  • Generic eating tips?
  • Anything else?
Thanks in advance!!

NIL Salary Cap

If college athletes are going to be paid like professionals, why can't we just regulate fairness like the NFL? Put a salary cap on teams based on division. Better yet, base it on number of scholarships, so that a team punished with fewer scholarships also gets less salary cap.

This takes nothing away from a student athlete's rights to make money on their name, image, or likeness, but it levels the playing field, and would hopefully stop the free-for-all after every season.

Retirement

I’m curious for you folks that are near retirement or anyone in general. Has your outlook changed with the inflation that has occurred over the past couple of years? Is the number you now strived to retire on a lot higher?

Are you planning on working longer, hoping the stock market stays strong, or the past couple of years haven’t mattered and still feel good about your financial status?

Coach Bluder

What a run she has had the last 10 years, Iowa has won 245 games and hopefully still counting. 18 ncaa invites over 24 years, Big Tourney winner 4 of last 6 years. Three all- Americans (Logic - 1, Gustafson -2, and Clark - 4) Several Big Ten player of the year awards - Gustafson and Clark, multiple all-Big Ten players (Logic - 2 years, Gustafson - 2 years, Doyle 1 year, Czinano - 4 years, Clark - 4 years).

She has been named Big Ten coach of the year three times and Naismith National coach of the year.

But all the accolades do not tell the whole story. She and her assistant coaches have a mission statement beyond basketball of developing young women to be leaders of the future. The family approach and closeness of the team is apparent.

We are fortunate she is the coach at Iowa.
