Iowa Baseball #3 starter and Back end reliever

I am not that frequent of a poster but I follow Iowa baseball very closely. I pretty much watch every game through BTN plus. To say I’m excited about the 2024 team would be an understatement. I truly believe this team can do something special and even end up in the college World Series. Yes I think we will be that good.

My question about the team. After Marcus and Brody who does everyone anticipate will be our number 3 weekend starter. The easy answer to this is Cade obermueller makes a huge jump like Marcus and Brody did last year and is our number 3 starter….but one thing concerns me. As we saw in terre haute against Indiana state (I was there) you still need the shut down guy at the end of the game to close it out. This is what cost Iowa against the sycamores and nearly cost us in the first game against UNC. I liked the progression of Jack Whitlock and Aaron savery last year towards the end and I think they’ll be good relievers for us this year too but neither are guys with elite stuff that you can almost count on late in the game to slam the door.

Would Rick consider maybe using Cade the way he used Zach Daniels in 2018 to slam the door in the late innings? Maybe bring in Cade on Friday nights for multiple innings and then bring him back for a couple innings on Sunday? Obviously that would mean Iowa would have to find a solid number 3 starter. whether it’s Voelker? Maybe even savery or Whitlock or one of the newcomers?

In my opinion that’s the only thing about this years team that worries me come postseason play and that’s what cost us last year. Losing dorighi and Keaton Anthony will hurt our offense but with essentially the whole rest of the lineup returning along with the transfer from Utah and Guerin providing a potential power source as a true sophomore I think overall our offense will be fine. Besides the above two mentioned the only other bat we lose is hojnar and while it would be nice to have him back I expect gable Mitchell to be an upgrade defensively and also have great bat to ball skills. He won’t hit for the power hojnar did but I think he’ll be a serviceable potential number 9 hitter to roll the lineup over. With guys like seegers back, raider tello getting comfortable in year 2 as a starter, Sam Petersen potentially breaking out big time into a star, wilmes as a good on base guy and huckstorf doing well as a senior I think we will score enough runs most games. Also if those closer to the program could let us know what newcomers to the program you expect to be big contributors besides Davis Cop from Utah it would be appreciated. I know we had a few pitchers transfer in and hopefully they can help us and one or more of them can help with my concerns about the bullpen in the late innings and allow us to use Cade as the number 3 starter.

On Iowa and go hawks! 2024 is our year!!!!

Majority in new poll say Biden, most members of Congress don’t deserve new term: Gallup!!

A majority of registered voters in a poll released Friday said they think President Biden and most members of Congress don’t deserve reelection.

The Gallup survey found 61 percent of registered voters said Biden doesn’t deserve reelection, while 38 percent said they think he deserves to stay in the White House for another four years.

Additionally, only 24 percent of respondents said most members of Congress deserved reelection, and 67 percent said they do not.

Despite voters’ opinions regarding most of Congress and Biden, 55 percent of respondents said their representative in their congressional district deserves reelection. Thirty-four percent disagreed.

A CNN/SSRS poll released Thursday found that 34 percent of respondents said the president deserves to be reelected, while 66 percent disagreed. Thirty-eight percent in that poll also said that they approve of the way Biden is handling his job, with 62 percent saying they disapproved.

The CNN/SSRS poll also found former President Trump leading Biden by 4 points among registered voters, with 49 percent saying they would be more likely to vote for Trump, while 45 percent said they would be more likely to vote for Biden.

Trump is leading Biden by 2 points in a national polling average by The Hill and Decision Desk HQ.

The Gallup poll was conducted Jan. 2-22 of 1,011 U.S. adults. T

Layoffs surged 136% in January to second-highest level on record

The pace of job cuts by U.S. employers accelerated at the start of 2024, a sign the labor market is starting to deteriorate in the face of ongoing inflation and high interest rates.

That is according to a new report published by Challenger, Gray & Christmas, which found that companies planned 82,307 job cuts in January, a substantial 136% increase from the previous month. However, that is down about 20% from the same time one year ago. It marked the second-highest layoff total for the month of January in data going back to 2009.

"Waves of layoff announcements hit U.S.-based companies in January after a quiet fourth quarter," said Andy Challenger, senior vice president of Challenger, Gray & Christmas. The cuts were "driven by broader economic trends and a strategic shift towards increased automation and AI adoption in various sectors, though in most cases, companies point to cost-cutting as the main driver for layoffs.

Financial companies bore the brunt of the job losses in January, with the industry shedding 23,238 employees. That is the highest monthly layoff total for the financial sector since September 2018, when it announced 27,343 job cuts.

The technology sector followed with 15,806 layoffs, the most since May 2023 and a stunning 254% increase from just one month prior.

"The impact of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence adoption is beginning to be felt from a jobs perspective, particularly in media and tech, but truly across sectors," Challenger said. "That said, companies are not outright blaming AI for many layoff decisions."

Food production companies also accounted for a large swath of the job cuts in January, slashing 6,656 positions – the highest monthly total for the sector since November 2012. Challenger said that "high costs and advancing automation" are reshaping how the industry operates.

The sector is battling headwinds like climate change and immigration policies that affect labor dynamics, according to the report.

Another source of layoffs in January was retail stores, which trimmed 5,364 positions in January, a significant increase from the 110 layoffs announced in December.

The top reason cited for job cuts last month was restructuring; companies blamed stores closing and artificial intelligence for the layoffs, as well.

The labor market has remained historically tight over the past year, defying economists' expectations for a slowdown. Although economists say it is beginning to normalize after last year's blistering pace, it is nowhere near breaking.

The findings precede the release of the more closely watched January jobs report from the Labor Department on Friday morning, which is expected to show that employers hired 180,000 workers, following a gain of 216,000 in December.

The unemployment rate is expected to inch higher to 3.8%.

Question About H&R Block Tax Returns Iowa State Form

Maybe it is due so some state changes but the Iowa form is not showing a place to enter information for Iowa Income. If I go to the next screen for Adjustments to Income, I can pull up the copy of the actual state form and it is filled in from the Federal information. But usually there are additional questions the state wants answered. The other difference is that in past years there was a place to deduct licensing for our vehicles but that has not come up yet either. The form does seem confused because the checking for error screen tool bar never stops flashing.
I have also deleted and re-added the form per instructions. Now the Federal section that worked is in a continuous checking the return loop. And their phone help robot is worthless.
Wondering if anyone else has found this and knows the fix for it.
