2006 Recruiting: Closing With Noah Clayberg?

He is 5'11 according to his profile and if he truly runs a 4.6 that is definitely fast enough for SS. He is also a winner which you can't get enough guys like that on the team even if they aren't scholarship players.

Didn't say we should give him a scholarship, anywhere. Please point out where I did. I am just stating that your over emphasis on height, for a freaking STRONG SAFETY who is seldom responsible for pass coverage in our scheme, is beyond idiotic.

What was Bob Sanders' listed playing height? He is the single greatest player that I have ever seen at Iowa, and it's not close.

Let's at least acknowledge that recruiting and projecting college and even pro success is a total crapshoot. TOTAL. So at some level all, proponents and naysayers, need to sit back and not take yourself so seriously. Ferentz and Morgan are not total idiots, they must see something they like about the kid, and they did offer a scholarship to him, albeit for next year. "Measurables" only get you so far, and it is always a best-case situation to have speed, strength, explosiveness AND a high football IQ, or an inner confidence that "we will win this game" and go about making plays to accomplish that.

I did some looking, and Tyler Sash was listed at 6'0 190, 4.57 40 coming out of HS. Everything I've read about what made him great had to do with intangibles and instinct, true? Bob Sanders had little interest coming out of HS, and while at Iowa dropped his 40 from 4.6 to 4.3, and increased his vertical from 33 to 42.. Still, it wasn't his "measurables" that served him as one of Iowa's all-time greats. Clayberg is listed at 5'11 and 202, with a 4.6 40. But his 10-yd sprint is a very impressive 1.53, and he was 38-1 as a starting QB, for what those things are worth.

Can Clayberg cut it? Time will tell, just as it will for all the super hyped kids. All I know is I loved watching a short, pudgy LB from Wisconsin of years ago and marveled at his ability to make football plays.

I thought I bread he was a 4.6 guy. Also, I saw him play. He wasn't quick or fast enough IMO (take that for what you will) to only be 5'10 and be a scholarship guy at this point.
Fair enough. I don't put much stock in reported 40 times. On video, he looks pretty damn quick, but we all know video isn't much good for measuring speed & quickness. I also think being short of stature is a plus for a RB. Harder to see, harder to tackle. Doesn't matter much for safety, either.

I see a lot of similarities w/ Snyder. A multi- sport Iowa athlete who due to injuries was not able to camp thus the short offer list. He is shorter than Snyder, but has great feet. If you think Lomax is a 4.45 guy coming out of his you are nuts. Lomax, Snyder, Taylor, and Clayberg all have mild differences, but more similarities. Instincts, intelligence, toughness, hardworking, and great leaders. I believe if he was a black kid from Maryland we'd all be excited. Because he's a white rural kid from Iowa we knit pick. I'd love to see him as a PWO or gray shirt. I've visited with his his coach multiple times. Coach McKinstrey thinks this kid is a hidden gem. Backup to Taylor/Snyder and future 2-3 year starter.

Hard-nosed, local, "program" guys are excellent fall-back candidates. There is a very low bust-rate with a kid like Clayberg. At the very least, he will work hard, show up on time, know his assignments, and be a good special teams player. Its likely he even makes the 2-deep as an upperclassmen. Better than taking a flyer on some "skill" talent from the South that nobody in the South wanted at the last minute who is at risk of transfer.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Drew003. Seriously, Coach Morgan always finds these guys that nobody wants and beats the drum for them and they almost always turn out as all-conference. One guy he "found" that we didn't give the final scholarship was a Running Back out of Clinton named David Johnson. No scholarship. Imagine him as the tailback being led to the hole by Weisman in 2012, 2013 and 2014. "but he takes plays off." "he isn't a hard worker." Trust coach Morgan.

Not saying he will turn out, but this kid is a FOOTBALL PLAYER. Get him on the bus and he will find a place to be special. Even if it is the gunner on Kick-off coverage. Compared to all the kids who get full rides and then quit, I would take it! Trust coach Morgan.

There was a 5'10" LB out of MN a few years ago who looked around the field at the other LB's and decided he would be OK with a switch to FB. Only way he would probably get on the field. Bush was his last name. One HELL of a great lead blocker. Didn't this season teach us how valuable guys like that are? Most programs don't have FBs these days. I think he would be a "considine-like" SS or a very good FB. I have been wrong before, but ... I think he will earn that scholarship.

Anyone on the board from Pella? Does he compete in other sports? An athlete like that is bound to be good at several sports, IMHO...

Ok so we are better off taking a guy like Truitt, Terrence Harris, Embry, Spearman, or Jinning. Ok - gotcha! This guys film and testing #'s are better than the list I presented and he's a winner. His shuttle and 10 yd time is ligit! Reese Morgan has a great eye for in state talent!

He has been a very active athlete in hs. I know he was a 4-yr starter on some great Pella football teams, and was moved to QB just prior to the beginning of his sophomore season, was also brought up to varsity as a freshman in basketball and is in varsity rotation on Pella's #1 rated bkball team, and also started on very good soccer teams since a freshman. The attribute that has set him apart has been his exceptional speed burst that creates separation and/or closes distance. You can see that on his film by noting how many kids end up diving at him and missing.

Speed is important but instincts allowing you to anticipate can mitigate that. Let's say you're a tenth of a second faster than a guy who always seems to be in the right place at the right time, does that extra speed you possess matter when you're out of position? Or maybe you're a burner but your toughness doesn't quite match a slower guy. I don't know what the future holds for Clayberg and Iowa, but sometimes the staff takes a flier on a guy. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes not. Recruiting doesn't come with guarantees, just ask Blake Larsen.

I'm from Pella but my kids go to a different school.

He's a great kid, a great athlete, an extremely hard worker, very tough, and comes from a great family. He is the type of kid that matches the Iowa football foundation. I believe he has the raw abilities to become a very good safety at Iowa.

His athleticism is apparent on the basketball court, but the his basketball fundamentals/skills - and his shooting ability in particular - are pretty average. In that regard, he is no Tyler Sash.

I'm glad he's a Hawkeye and I expect him to make some noise on special teams and, eventually, the two-deeps.

My brother coaches in the area. He tells me that the main hang up with Noah is his injury history, particularly a knee. He's apparently got D1 ability and is an awesome kid from a great (and very athletic) family. If Iowa can get him as a greyshirt or walk on it could turn out to be a HUGE steal.

Knees are fine, but he did dislocate his elbow last game as soph, which kept him out of bkball, and played last few games his jr year with a stress fracture in his foot, which kept him out of both bktball and soccer, and he missed all summer training and wasn't able to do any camps, etc. I don't think he has ever missed a football game that I know of.

Thanks I thought he said a knee, but I may have confused his situation with the Kakmarinski kid at Pella Christian. He definitely tore an ACL. At any rate I know he thinks that coaches are worried about him being able to stay healthy.
