2022 Recruiting (1 Scholarship Left): Jaxon Kohler & Josh Dix VISITED Sep3, Tyler Nickel Sep17. Aidan Shaw VISITED Jun23. Kyle Filipowski to Duke

Kohler has an official to Michigan State this weekend.
I fear MSU much more than Illinois !
I hope Tiny Tom is too late to the party.

Jaxon Kohler was scheduled to visit USC on Sep 10 but, as noted above, he is now heading to East Lansing instead.

Based on the official visits he has planned, his commitment might not be for a while.

His upcoming official visit schedule:

Sep 10: Michigan State

Oct 8: Nebraska

Oct 29: Oklahoma

Date Yet to be Determined: USC

how many scholarships do the Illini have left?
Illinois may be too late with this offer although they feel they have an “in.” If he visits, I will take it seriously.

Illinois likely has 3 scholarships available. They have two 4-star guard commitments so far. They lose Frazier, Williams and Plummer for sure. Grandison has an extra year due to Covid year but he might want to move on and play somewhere for money. What will Kofi do? Curbelo is already being talked about as a first rounder. So, who knows.

Sorry Combes but MSU has the chops to offer late on one of their fallback prospects ,the Illini are not yet at that level.

I'll try and be optimistic on this one and say that allowing Drake and Wake in-homes is just him being nice and telling them in person, but the rub there is making them come all the way just to say no thanks isn't exactly respectful to those staffs.

So now I'm back to being of the belief that he isn't as sold on Iowa as some are saying.

I still think it is down to Iowa and Wisconsin and I think Iowa is in the lead at the moment.

Well, he seemed excited about the Illinois offer and he is visiting Oklahoma on October 29th so you would think he would be able to fit in Illinois somewhere along the way.

How many scholarships does UNC have left? Seems like they already have a big class
I think that's a bit muddy. Brady Manek will open up one. Leaky Black would open up a 2nd IF he decides to move on after he graduates and not use the extra Covid year of eligibility. So it appears Hubert Davis may be signing more players than he has scholarships for, and assuming it will work itself out with players turning pro or transferring at the end of the season. Caleb Love, Armando Bacot, and Dawson Garcia are all potential early entrants.

Shaver is enrolling early, redshirting, and taking the open scholarship on this year's team.

Washington and Trimble would hypothetically be taking scholarships vacated by Manek and Black.

So I guess Nickel would need someone to go pro or transfer to get a scholarship.

Hmmmm, that doesn't sound great.

Recruiting is crazy, isn't it?

Just 14 days ago, on the Aug 26 Hawkeye Report Podcast, at the 31:30 mark, Tom and Matt Randazzo talked the latest on basketball recruiting.

This is where things stood 14 days ago:

Josh Dix was in Iowa City Sep 3 and in Madison Sep 10. Tom said that these are the only 2 OV's he's scheduled so far. Tom said he may make OV's to Drake &/or Utah. Tom discussed that Iowa & Wisconsin might be Josh's finalists.

Tom said to plan on Josh being deliberate about the decision process (ie, he won't leave Iowa City & commit the next morning)

Tom also discussed Jaxon Kohler and what he would bring to Iowa. Jaxon also plans on visiting USC, Oklahoma & Nebraska. Since then, of course, he's gotten offers from Michigan State & Illinois.

Tom gave an update on Aidan Shaw. One school apparently has a 0% chance of landing him. Guess which school that is. Hint: Kansas. Aidan is gonna decide by Sep 17.

Tom gave an update on Tyler Nickel as well. He visits Iowa City on Sep 17. Virginia Tech & Iowa (the schools he's scheduled OVs) seemed to be in pretty good shape.

Sep 17 could be a big day/weekend for Iowa when Aidan Shaw & Tyler Nickel make/could make their choice.

They then discussed if Iowa would take Dix, Nickel and Shaw with only 2 scholarships remaining.

Lots of good stuff here.

Not sure how many they have left but they have signed 3 so far.

Strictly speaking, UNC is out of scholarships for the 2022 class. However, as mentioned above they are anticipating several early entries into the NBA draft next spring. Also, if I am not mistaken, Whitmore is on an official visit to Villanova this weekend, and the mood on the Carolina board isn't exactly positive about that.

I keep reading that a program/coach that can help him reach the NBA is really important to him. North Carolina, perception wise, would have the advantage there over Iowa & Virginia Tech.

Another interesting tidbit: 2 Rivals analysts/publishers have Tyler committing to Virginia Tech.

* Jamie Shaw predicted that on Aug 31. His page says he is right 87.6% of the time.

* Tim Sullivan (HokieHaven.com Editor) predicted that 3 days ago, on Sep 6.

What do they know that we don't?

I have a suspicion that some were thinking that Nickel would commt to Tech on his OV last weekend. FWIW, it would appear that a few on the UNC board breathed a sign of relief when he didn't as they aren't as confident about Whitmore as they were two weeks ago. Lots of dominoes yet to fall, and I imagine Whitmore's will be a key to Nickel's. As a side note, keep an eye on the recruitment of Noah Clowney, a PF out of South Carolina whose stock has been rising. He has a prior relationship with Coach Mike Young at VT (when he was HC at Wofford), and if he picks them, it might make Tech more appealing to Nickels. That said, Clowney has better offers on the table, Indiana being one of them.

Busy day for Iowa coaches.

Today is the first day of the recruiting period, in which college coaches can make in-person, off-campus contact with prospects.

Yeah, Whitmore will be attending Nova next year.

It's getting down to crunch time......I am always nervous until they make a commitment. I hope that we at least get Josh Dix......Dix and Bowen improve our backcourt next year...where we lack depth.

I am also very high on Kohler and hope that we land him....but, he is an out of state guy and we are loaded with talent in our front court so he's not as vital...that said, the kid is very talented.

If we don't get either of these guys I think that Fran will most likely still pursue a guard for this class and IF the right forward is available he would obviously take them as well.

Tom K projected Josh to Iowa on June 8. I still like our chances.

Probably so. I know the Illinois coaches think they have an “in” with him. Might be too little too late. If they get an official visit, there’s a chance. If not, no chance.

It looks like Cam Whitmore is heavily favored to go to Nova. I think Kakert said on his podcast last week that he heard Nickel was leaning toward iowa.

Dont feel great about the UNC development though.

In other developing news, Adam Zagoria is reporting that Nickel is taking a 2nd OV to UNC this weekend.

At the 50:35 mark of the Sep 9 Hawkeye Report Podcast, @TomKakert talks basketball recruiting.

Tom discusses the 3 basketball prospects who were on campus last weekend.

(1) Luka spent an entire practice talking with Jaxon Kohler. Tom said Jaxon "admires Luka to death." Tom said that and the fact that Luka and Jaxon have similar games (below the rim guys) has really helped Iowa.

As has been discussed, Jaxon visits Michigan State this weekend; he will also visit USC. He has not made a decision on his last 2 visits (Oklahoma, Illinois & Kansas are in the mix). Tom said Jaxon will take all 5 of his official visits.

(2) Tom reminds us that Josh Dix is officially visiting Wisconsin this weekend. As Tom said 2 weeks ago in the Aug 26 Hawkeye Report Podcast, the feeling is that it is between Iowa and Wisconsin. Tom said we might see a commitment decision from Josh by the end of the month.

(3) Tom also discusses Cooper Koch (Class of 2024; on an unofficial visit), who was the 3rd basketball visitor last weekend. Tom said Cooper will likely end up being a Top 50 prospect in the country. Tom said that Iowa is a clear favorite for him.

Additional note: on June 25 Tom forecasted Cooper to Iowa.

Lots of good, current info!!

@BBHawk , I know you saw this 2 posts above, but you keep trolling away by asking stupid questions in other threads when you had already got the answer in this thread.

As I stated 2 posts above, in yesterday's Hawkeye Report podcast, @TomKakert reminds us that Josh Dix is officially visiting Wisconsin this weekend.

As Tom said 2 weeks ago in the Aug 26 Hawkeye Report Podcast, the feeling is that it is between Iowa and Wisconsin.

Tom said we might see a commitment decision from Josh by the end of the month.

See my post above. He's visited Iowa. He's for sure visiting Michigan State & USC.

Of the 2 visits he has left, it will be between Oklahoma, Kansas & Illinois

Just heard that Josh Dix is no longer officially visiting Madison this weekend.

Apparently the Badgers are going with another shooting guard, Connor Essegian, who visited Madison last weekend.

On June 8th, Tom Kakert projected Josh to Iowa.

@perryhawk , as I have stated ever since, I think Josh is heading to Iowa.

Didn't I just read somewhere that a company in Michigan has promised to pay every MSU football and basketball player $500/month? Can Iowa match that?

Here's some more info on the players getting paid $6,000 per year at MSU.

It will be a nice sales pitch this weekend when Jaxon Kohler visits them.

From the Detroit Free Press:

United Wholesale Mortgage is putting the "green" in the green and white.

Michigan State basketball and football players will receive a stipend funded by United Wholesale Mortgage, which former MSU basketball walk-on Mat Ishbia now leads.

The company, a top wholesale mortgage lender over the past half-decade, announced via news release Wednesday that it will sponsor all 133 MSU men's basketball and football players starting this upcoming school year.

Each student-athlete will be paid $500 per month during the duration of their playing career, Ishbia told the Free Press on Wednesday.

A United Wholesale Mortgage spokesperson updated the release, stating that football and men's basketball players will be paid year-round, not just in season.

In return, the athletes will market UWM on their social media pages and get the word out about home-lending options, he said.

Ishbia donated a record $32 million to MSU athletics in February, but the stipends are a "separate" effort, according to the release. Some Spartans have already begun sharing messages about United Wholesale.

As long as Tyler does not commit this weekend we are good to go for next weekend's visit to Iowa City
