2024 Recruiting. Orig Post Updated Oct 2nd. 36 Offers So Far (incl. Chris Tadjo & Cooper Koch). 2 Scholarships Available (NOT counting PMac & Tony)

His Rivals recruiting profile has him wearing the Iowa gold from his visit which doesn't mean anything but is interesting. Other P5 interest is Marquette, Xavier, and VaTech. A 6'7 SG certainly fits the bill for Fran.
Where have you been? Pretty sure that ship passed after the 15th.

Scroll up a few posts to see what the 2024-2025 roster currently looks like. 8 forwards/centers (Compton would put that number at 9) and 3 guards. Hopefully Tony comes back! Are we getting a little too forward/center heavy?
Agreed. I assume a guard would be targeted in the portal if there is a spot available. I like our two young PGs, but they are very unproven at this level of competition at this point. If he stays healthy, Dix is going to be a very solid all-round guard for the next 3 years. Can Pryce Sandfort play some 2 guard, or would he be a step slow?

I, too, wouldn't mind getting a shooting guard in the portal; the only worry is if they want a nice NIL deal, that is something Fran/SWARM currently can't offer

Pryce might be able to play the 2, if needed. IIRC, Payton has practiced at the 2, 3 and 4, so there are options....

I actually saw Williams in that role. He either decided to be a Shocker or Fran let him know his scholly was gone. We'll never know.

And big man depth because Mulvey ain't it.
Well going into next year we will have Brauns, Freeman, and Dembele returning. All of those guys are probably best suited as a 5--Dembele is a bit undersized, but he's built in a way that he'd be a perfect small-ball 5. So I don't know, I don't think a C is really necessary but to your point, I do wonder if Fran has had some conversations with Riley about his future. My hope is that if Riley still has not shown progress after this year then we politely ask him if Fran can help him to find a place where he would play. If that's the case, that could be a reason as to still go after Compton to add another C to the mix.

@seer_hawk , what's crashing this thread? The videos?
I tried several times, to read page 16, and I kept getting an error message. It said "aw snap we have encountered an error", and indicated it was out of memory. I've never had the message on my computer, and only on page 16. I don't have similar issues with this page, so it's probably not affecting the whole thread.

Weird; I am not getting any error messages. I also just tested the highlight video in post #620. Granted, it started up at the very end so I had to click on the time bar to make it start at the beginning but other than that, all the videos are working for me.

If Fran can get a legit 5 to replace Mulvey then he should. I think true centers have lost their value on the court over past ~5 years across college basketball but it's still important to keep a 7+ footer on the roster for practice purposes and certain in-game situations.

As noted, additional 2024 recruit priority probably depends on whether Tony will return. I would guess that decision has not been made. If he isn't coming back, Fran definitely needs to find another guard. We are pretty deep at 3, 4 and 5.

And the nice thing is that the portal gives you a lot of flexibility. If there's a high school guard the staff likes, that's great. If not, then you try and convince Tony for year 5 and go out and get a transfer guard that is okay with coming off the bench. From my understanding with following a lot of national CBB recruiting, guards are just in a lot less of demand than bigs are in the portal (and therefore the depth guards aren't demanding nearly as much money as the depth Big men). If you look at the transfer hauls that teams in the Big Ten brought in, a lot of them brought in guards from low-major conferences that are pretty good and they aren't expected to start. I'm hopeful that Fran & staff have realized this and is trying to move away from constantly looking for portal bigs every year to being okay with adding portal guards every year.

In B1G play, especially....

I think Owen is close to 6'11 and he's a rebounding machine....those 3 extra inches (compared to all of our 6'8 players) will come in handy

Since Kirk doesn’t want to utilize the wide receivers he got in the portal, can Swarm start channeling funds to basketball recruiting? @Tx_Hawk?

Seriously, what a waste of money.
No kidding.

One thing you can't knock Fran for - he squeezes every ounce of offensive potential he can out of low caliber recruits. Rarely, do we have basketball players leave the program then perform better at other places (i.e. Charlie Jones effect).

I asked @Tx_Hawk about this in a thread on the football forum and he replied that the big time donors dictate where the money gets channeled. For example, all that new money being generated from beer/vodka sales goes to football, too (that's what Exile Brewing wanted).

I just looked up that comment, because that worried me. I think you are misinterpreting what Brad said, he said:

"Alcohol money goes to the Collective. I allow Exile to choose where the money goes (just like anybody else who contributes $1000+), and that is their choice. The donors decide where the money goes."
Meaning that the money is going into the Collective portion of the money pool that is divided by the 3 main sports--NOT just football.

my bad; the alcohol money is going towards volunteering; I just wish it could be used to help Fran land a stud high school player or transfer

Fran has been adamant to not participate in pay for play with high school recruits. He has been quoted to say, he feels existing players and/or transfer portal players should not receive less than a incoming high school players. Don't disagree with his philosopy.

Unfortunately, one or two top recruits can really change a team's win-loss record. The downside is, those top recruits don't stay long.

Hope Pharaoh sees the Iowa City I know and love on his visit this weekend. Come to Iowa, you'll love it!!

Pharaoh has some Kwahi "claw" Leonard mitts on him from that picture. Would be a huge commit if it happens.
