2024 Recruiting. Orig Post Updated Oct 2nd. 36 Offers So Far (incl. Chris Tadjo & Cooper Koch). 2 Scholarships Available (NOT counting PMac & Tony)

Chris was the MVP of the BioSteel All Canadian Basketball Games this year (top 24 high school male and female basketball players that are Canadian and/or playing in Canada). Sounds like he's a very good defender, too.

I especially like hearing that a player a very good defender, who can guard 1-5! Videos show size, athleticism, and explosiveness, but it's hard to assess offensive skills. I trust Fran's judgment.

Going back to the big question right now. Is Diggs still interested if Fran goes begging...

I don't think the Iowa staff is going to go back to Diggs.
I actually think this situation was more of the Iowa staff souring on Diggs than the other way around. But who knows, that may be more of someone trying to save face. All that is for sure out there is Diggs was trying to commit and the Iowa staff decided to not take the commitment in the moment.

I agree

Academics? That's what I usually think about when it comes to foreign recruits and lack of offers.
The last two times we went to Canada for recruits (Jamie Vanderbeken and Nathan Skinner), I believe academics were an issue.

Of course, both of those guys were during the Alford/Neal era, when there was a lot of shady stuff going on with our recruiting.

If you're going to be shady at least win.

We're all guessing, of course, but it does seem like Fran got tired of waiting on Caden Diggs to make a decision and pivoted to Isaiah Johnson-Arigu.

Here is an update to the timeline I posted on Friday, Sep 15th, of how things went down:

On Monday, Sep 4th Caden Diggs announced on Instagram that he would be announcing his commitment on Sep 15th. At that time, on Sep 4th, there were 2 crystal balls saying Caden Diggs was heading to Iowa. Diggs was compared to Devyn Marble; things looked good with his recruitment.

What's interesting is that 2 days prior (on Sat. Sep 2), Isaiah Johnson-Arigu officially visited Iowa. So, Diggs said on Sep 4th he was ready to commit, but was that school (Iowa??) ready to commit to HIM? Looks like the answer is clearly "no" and that Fran/Iowa had pivoted from Diggs to Isaiah Johnson-Arigu.

Then, on Wed. Sep 13th:

* both of the crystal ball predictions of Caden Diggs choosing Iowa were taken down.

* Houston Wilson (Rivals Recruiting Analyst for Pitt) forecasted Isaiah Johnson-Arigu to the Hawkeyes.

* Isaiah Johnson-Arigu said he would announce his college choice on Sat, Sep 16.

* it it was reported that Caden Diggs had reopened his recruitment and was 100% open for other programs to get involved.

Sat, Sep 16: Isaiah Johnson-Arigu announced his commitment to Miami (FL).

It would be interesting to see what exactly happened over those 15 days (Sep 2-Sep 16). I am speculating, of course, but it looks like Iowa got tired of waiting for Diggs to make a decision and when he finally did, on Sep 4th, it was too late.

Also, from some reports, it appears Isaiah Johnson-Arigu was going to pick either Iowa or Miami. There's speculation that NIL money might have been the deciding factor. But, again, it's only speculation.

I will eat a shoe if Pharoah Compton ends up coming to Iowa.

We lost out top target IJA because we got out-bid by Miami. We lost our top target last year - JP Estrella - because we got outbid by Tennessee. And I am sure we can't offer the same money for Mr. Compton's services that LSU is offering. The Swarm CEO even confirmed that NIL funds for Iowa basketball can't compete with other programs right now.

NIL is net-positive for our football program and is a net-negative for our basketball program.

LSU has hosted 3 different 4/5-star forwards & bigs these past few weeks. We don't know how high up Compton is on LSU's board. Not sure how close any of those other guys are to a decision, but if one of those guys were to commit that may change the equation for Compton.

We're 2 commitments behind the Class of 2023. Hopefully our luck changes.

When the Class of 2023 committed:

Oct 11, 2021: Owen Freeman
June 23, 2022: Brock Harding
Aug 6, 2022: Pryce Sandfort
Nov 16, 2022: Ladji Dembele

I'm thinking he stays out West. Has a San Diego St look to his game.

Compton no longer visiting Tennessee.

Lots of good info in this article from 2 days ago.

Compton was originally scheduled to visit Tennessee on Sep 23rd.

The Latest on Pharaoh Compton

Pharaoh Compton is the consensus ranked 88th player in the 2024 class. The Las Vegas native recently released a top-five of Iowa, LSU, San Diego State, Tennessee and UNLV.

Breaking Down Teams Involved

Iowa: “(I like) the way they produce their 4’s. They said I would be able to show what I have to offer vs. other teams.”

LSU: “Coach Hamilton has been showing a lot of love. They think I can play in the SEC and they need guys.”

Tennessee: “They think I’m strong and tough enough to play in the SEC. They’ve been very successful in the past.”

San Diego State: “They said I could fit in right away and fit their culture. I fit in with the guy they have at the moment. They like the way I play – attacking the rim and how physical I am.”

UNLV: “They been showing me love for more than a year and a half. They think I can make an impact right away. Dedan Thomas is my guy, so that would be cool playing with him.

Visit Schedule

Compton took an official visit to San Diego State in late August. He adjusted his schedule and will no longer visit Tennessee on the 23rd.

LSU: September 23
Iowa: September 30
UNLV: October 3

What He’s Looking For

“An established culture is huge for me. Being closer to home would be cool, but it’s not the end all be all. I’m looking for a place that will allow me to show out and show the work I have been putting in. Those are three things that will stand out for me.”

I have read multiple beat writers from LSU say that Compton is not visiting this weekend. They are getting crystal balled to land a high 4-star big man so it's not clear whether Compton will remain a target for them going forward. They have a lot of very highly ranked guys visiting this weekend.
