2025 MBB Recruiting Thread

Iowa offered 7'1" PF Malachi Moreno on August 24, 2022.

He unofficially visited Oct 2, 2022 (Michigan game).

His AAU team for 2023 was Indiana Elite (same as Cooper Koch).

He officially visited the weekend of Oct 7, 2023 (Purdue football game). He and Cooper Koch were hanging out together during this visit.

Malachi and Cooper Koch were two of the 20 that Adidas selected to go to Italy in June, 2023 as part of their Eurocamp.

Fran and Matt Gatens watched his AAU game on April 22, 2023.

Here's a story on his recruitment.

Some excerpts:

Moreno has only completed one official visit out of the bunch to Iowa.

"They have been in contact with me since I was a little fella," Moreno said on the Hawkeyes. "They recruited my older brother Michael when he was in high school and they kept in contact with me ever since. Fran McCaffery and Sherman Dillard have always treated my mom and I like family. It was nice being in that family environment when I was on my visit."

"I had a chance to watch them play and they are doing well with their freshman big man Owen Freeman," Moreno continued. "He has made big strides since I saw him on the visit. Seeing how well he has developed gives me an example of how well I can develop at a program like that."

Outside of Iowa, Moreno has completed unofficial visits to Arkansas, Cincinnati, Indiana, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Tennessee.

He looks a little like Garza.

Cochran's team played against Blair Academy, which features 6'10 Jack Bailey who has an Iowa offer:

You have to give it to Fran, he is a tireless recruiter. He recruits Minny a lot with no success, not sure why. He also struggles in the Chicago area but does better down-state. Seems to be doing better out East. Hope he makes a splash in the 2025 class. The 2023 class has been solid as freshmen, I'm anxious to see our 2024 commits.

Garlock is from a suburb of Madison. Looks like a strong Wisconsin lean. He visited on his own dime, so whi knows.
This was his 2nd unofficial to Iowa City too--he visited this fall for a football game too. But yeah, if I were to guess he will end up a Badger if Wisconsin pushes for him. Not sure what their plan is for 2025 at this point--they already have a guard committed for '25 and I know there are some wings they are pursuing in-state (Davion Hannah and Xzavion Mitchell) so not sure if all of those guys would be a "take" as a lot of schools are doing smaller classes these days.

Funny looking at the family's facial expressions. Dad is smiling, daughter has a semi-smile, Will is watching intently and his Mom is sitting in the row behind with a scowl on her face. I think she is thinking about all the super bowl parties they are missing out on, wishing they were anywhere but Iowa City, ha!

Well the young man can see what Iowa bigs can do. Freeman put on a heck of a show against Minny.

Timeline on Trent's recruitment:

Iowa offered on July 9, 2022.

Unofficially visited Sep 10, 2022 (Iowa State football game).

Sherman Dillard watched his AAU game on April 22, 2023.

Fran was at his school on Sep 11, 2023 to watch him work out.

Officially visited Sep 29-Sep 30, 2023 (Michigan State football game); this was his first ever official visit.

On Fri Feb 16, 2024, an Iowa assistant was present to watch him play.

Iowa offered 6'11 PF/C Will Garlock on Jan 16, 2024.

He visited Iowa City the weekend of Fri. Sep 15, 2023 (Western Michigan football game).

He also visited Super Bowl Sunday, Feb 11, 2024 (Minnesota MBB game).

Looks like we have a shot at him.

Jack really doesn't have an offer?

Jack really doesn't have an offer?
I mean, I have that on my list as sort of tongue and cheek, but no he has not posted on social media that he has a scholarship offer from Iowa. Jack has reported 4 offers: Butler, VA Tech, Wake Forest and Bryant. FWIW, Jack was visiting Butler yesterday for their game against Creighton.

This is the guy that has attended Luka Garza camps in the DC area (as he's from DC), has worked out w/ Garza, and has stated that he's very familiar with / has watched Iowa a lot because he's a fan of Garza.
Mom's wearing ND crap. Pretty sure where he will end up. Fran has offered numerous bigs lately. Unless he visits, I would scratch him off the list.

In fairness, the pic with mom was taken while he was visiting ND - but yea, no visit certainly means it's a bit of a non-starter at this point. That being said, Fran must think he has a shot or he wouldn't be so active in reaching out to him.
