26 UI student-athletes are being investigated for online gambling, incl in Wrestling, Men’s Basketball, Football, Baseball, Men’s track & field

Welp, DO NOT GAMBLE ON SPORTS is a pretty long term, standard rule the NCAA has had for a very long time. Unfortunately, these players ignored that rule and now they have to pay the price for that. It sucks, for sure.

I'm actually surprised this isn't a bigger story around the country. It's almost like people are afraid if they made a bigger deal about it then people would start asking questions and want to look at other schools around the country. Personally, I'm betting that if they did that there would not be a school in the country that wouldn't have significant numbers of athletes caught up in this stuff. A lot of the competitive personality traits that make someone a top tier athlete also make them likely to gamble as well.

Part of me wants the Hawks to punt this year and have a year similar to When Perry beat Hendricks. Woods winning it all and a few other AA’s mixed in there with him. Carl and his kronies might be doing something similar with Starcrap and Brooks which kinda leaves the door open also. Need to find a way to get all 3 Ferrari bothers in the lineup next year add Arnold, Kueter, Block, Ayala and PK psu has got a fight on their hands.

Feel kinda bad for the kids involved. But here’s something to think about my daughter is a D1 softball player(mid major) and every Tuesday in team meetings they remind the girls to not gamble. I guess the biggest difference is there really is no NIL money being thrown around and stiffens barely cover rent so no extra money to throw around. I see both sides where it the kids want to bet on a game or 2 but I also see how it could affect the integrity of the games. Just sucks!

To be fair until we know how much they bet, on what sports, what teams, when, and how often; it's hard to guage the severity of their actions and render any judgement.

I remain averse to the concept of lifetime bans except for the most extreme cases resulting in collusion, point shaving, or betting on athlete's own games. I don't believe that is the case here.

That aside, coming from a PSU fans perspective, this really sucks for the program, the sport, the kids, the fans, and our unique rivalry.

You have my sincere condolences.

This is one of those things that could have happened almost anywhere. We all have done questionable things, outright dumb things, with our friends at that age.

We can all hope as fans of the sport and our mutual history, that the Hawks bounce back strong, quickly. The Portal and NIL have changed the game. Here is to your regaining a full strength roster, ready to do battle in 2024, as if this never happened.
Other school's wrestlers should have a pretty clear idea not to do this in the future and the ramifications will be carried out and are serious. If you get busted going forward, shame on you. It is a shame it had to happen at Iowa for the rest of the schools to get the lesson.

The state / ncaa is making another use-case for illegal bookies. Betting money you don’t have and now not getting caught by the NCAA.

I agree with this in principle, but never underestimate the stupidity and arrogance of young adults, especially male athletes. Notice that up to this point no women athletes are involved.

I’m not saying that they did gamble… but that’s part of the legal (prob not NCAA) appeal here… they specifically targeted male athletes and nobody else.

A few years back my accountant told me that he would place some bets with an assistant coach at a D3 football program, and that he did play for a major D1 university. I’d speculate he might’ve been doing this in college, but it was done the old fashion way, cash in exchange for the bet with payoffs in cash.

True that.
He did in fact have his ducks in a row..

Having Gable Steveson in the room for a year would be great for Cass and Kueter. It would allow both of them to get much better, and allow Kueter to focus training.

There is no doubt that if a similar microscope were placed on every school in the country, there would likely not be a school that is unscathed. Every program around the country should be hoping and praying that their state does not crack down like Iowa did. Although I do believe there needs to be harsh penalties on gambling for the good of the sport, I recognize it is unfair that it is only happening to Iowa schools. Hopefully, college athletes around the country take heed of what happened in Iowa and there is much less gambling by college athletes moving forward.

The fact that there isn't even any piling on from other schools is a testament to this. Usually when something bad happens to Iowa athletics it's a major story in the news cycle for several weeks. Hell, people still talk about the rhabdo incident. But I think other schools just want this to go away because they know they would be as bad or even worse if the magnifying glass were pointed in their direction.

First logical comment yet. Rest assured, other states w/ same gambling laws as Iowa have their own investigations rolling and it will just be a matter of time. Culprits will not be resting easy at night any time soon

Am I in the twilight zone? This thread is 14 pages long and it has been on topic almost the whole time. :)
There is hope for the cesspool after all!!!

As a side note - my dad ran a gambling shop for years. It put us through school and we lived the high life until he finally got busted. I grew up thinking gambling was a part of life. We played cards for money. We bet on things. I would have done the same thing in college if I had the opportunity. Luckily for me, there was no fanduel etc back then.

Are you from Iowa? I probably know him - LOL

We bet the over/under on the length of the sermon at Sunday mass. It's kinda funny, but it's not a joke. And it always kept the kid's attention.

I read a lot of reference to appeals. This is only a guess, but I would think there is a good chance that one potential appeal could involve a low number of bets and/or total $$ placed...but at least one bet included the women's BB team.

If that is the case, I can't imaging the NCAA giving in and setting a precedent that they would have to live with later at other schools. It would suck if it is the case and UI athletes just got caught up in final four hype, but I would not blame the NCAA one bit for not bending in that case.

Iowa football player Noah Shannon has been suspended one year. It's being appealed.

From what's being reported:

Shannon apparently bet on one of Iowa's other teams (ie, he bet on an Iowa basketball game or Iowa baseball or some other Iowa sport).

How many bets he placed and how many dollars he wagered has not been revealed as of now.
