26 UI student-athletes are being investigated for online gambling, incl in Wrestling, Men’s Basketball, Football, Baseball, Men’s track & field

Tried to told y’all.

Now just pray the NCAA plays nice. (Doubtful)

Plus - the appeal/defense of the attorney is likely to piss them off.
Would that be the gender exclusive nature of the investigation?

Update on this big freakin' mess:

I count 16 former & current Iowa student athletes being named so far. But I think there's MORE than 10 yet be be named because the UI's May 8 announcement stated the list of 111 individuals included 26 CURRENT student-athletes. The list of 16 student athletes (and one coach) that follows contains at least THREE FORMER student athletes (so there might be more 10 student-athletes yet to be named).

* On March 22, 2023 BB player Ahron Ulis announced that he was entering the transfer portal. He ended up at Nebraska

* FB players Reggie Bracy & Arland Bruce transferred in the offseason.

Of the Iowa student athletes (former & current) tied to gambling, here's the breakdown BY SPORT of who's been named publicly so far:

Baseball:
Keaton Anthony
Jacob Henderson
Ben Tallman
Gehrig Christensen--criminally charged

Football:
DL Noah Shannon
DB Reggie Bracy (now at Troy)--criminally charged
WR Arland Bruce (now at OK State)--criminally charged
WR Jack Johnson--criminally charged
Kicker/Punter Aaron Blom--criminally charged

Basketball:
Ahron Ulis (now at Nebraska)--criminally charged

Wrestling:
Tony Cassioppi--suspended for season?
Nelson Brands--suspended for season?
Abe Assad--suspended for season?
Cobe Siebrecht--suspended for season?
Cullan Schriever
Patrick Kennedy

Men's Track & Field:
no one yet named

Student Managers:
Evan Schuster, Iowa Men's Basketball--criminally charged (accused of betting on Iowa games over the last 2 seasons)

Coaches:
FB Grad assistant Owen O'Brien--criminally charged

Nobody is. Wrestling community is pretty small. Mineo isn’t really breaking news here that wasn’t pretty much known
weren't you one of the dumb@ss saying 11 guys, and how could the penalties be worse if they are senior and suspended for whole season. hate people who bring out i told you so and you were wrong

The release you posted above said 11 current student-athletes.

Reminder of the possible punishments:

According to NCAA guidelines, which are in effect for violations reported on or after May 2, 2023:

* Hawkeye players' college eligibility would be in jeopardy if they bet on Iowa games (in any sport).

* Football players could lose half a season if they bet on any college football contests.

* For other wagering activity:

--- they would face a loss of 30% of the season if they wagered more than $800

---20% of the season if they wagered between $501 and $800

--10% of the season for $201 to $500

---and gambling education (no games missed) for $200 or less.

To be fair until we know how much they bet, on what sports, what teams, when, and how often; it's hard to guage the severity of their actions and render any judgement.

I remain averse to the concept of lifetime bans except for the most extreme cases resulting in collusion, point shaving, or betting on athlete's own games. I don't believe that is the case here.

That aside, coming from a PSU fans perspective, this really sucks for the program, the sport, the kids, the fans, and our unique rivalry.

You have my sincere condolences.

This is one of those things that could have happened almost anywhere. We all have done questionable things, outright dumb things, with our friends at that age.

We can all hope as fans of the sport and our mutual history, that the Hawks bounce back strong, quickly. The Portal and NIL have changed the game. Here is to your regaining a full strength roster, ready to do battle in 2024, as if this never happened.

It does happen everywhere. This was a concentrated effort to target Iowa and Iowa State. Not sure how or why Drake, UNI, or all the D2 and D3 schools in Iowa went unscathed. My guess is someone was looking to make a name for themselves. In the end, the state is probably looking at several lawsuits for the way they went about accessing their information and targeting.

Wrong guy buddy. Apologies are accepted

It sure makes me wonder why Barta left?
However, I have my suspicions and there only that.

Pack on that muscle Kueter! Your time is now son. Red/Gray shirts seem less important now with the NIL and transfer portal.
With a top ten finish in real jeopardy at Nattys, you don't burn a redshirt for Kueter. And I wouldn't burn it with Arnold either.
No way in hell.

The additions of VV, Franek, and Caliendo were an early indication of how impacted the wrestling team was.

Gonna get ugly next winter.
Looks like Dresser finally beats Iowa in a dual...with an asterisk, of course.
Then again...imagine the embarrassment if he loses to an Iowa team missing four starters?
Ditto for Eggum.

I normally would agree. I just don't believe in punt years nowadays with NIL and the Portal. Although this maybe the year to do it
