26 UI student-athletes are being investigated for online gambling, incl in Wrestling, Men’s Basketball, Football, Baseball, Men’s track & field

Keep dreaming. He might qualify for the NCAAs.
You might be right. His first match was promising though. Nathan Haas was a big recruit for Nebraska before transferring to Cal Baptist in the offseason. Haas beat Owen Webster a couple years back and beat Zayne Lehman (former NQ) last year. I liked the feel and athleticism that Swafford displayed in the match against Haas. 184 cleared out a lot. I see 4 very likely AA's at 184 in Keckeisen, Truax, Munoz & Plott. After that, it's a crapshoot.

If i were in the position of these Iowa wrestlers I would IMMEDIATELY file a discrimination lawsuit against the NCAA for selective persecution... I mean they ONLY investigated the Iowa and Iowa state football and wrestling teams... I guess all the other sports teams BOTH male and Female in the state and THE REST of the country are safe??? How about we just give CASH bonuses out to the members of those 2 sports ?? would anyone be crying FOUL ??? I think a good legal team could find plenty for which to find discriminatory practices being implied. The standard is that all must share and be treated equally regardless of sex or institution.... UNLESS its Iowa and Iowa state football and wrestling ??? I would be seeking a good law firm and at least annoy the $HIT out of the NCAA
This was not an NCAA investigation.

Everyone was so giddy happy when gambling on NCAA event became legal in Iowa. This was going to be the result. All Iowa coaches can be blamed somewhat for not harping to the athletes to shun gambling. They didn't get the message home.
I'm not blaming their coaches here. From what I understand they are well informed that they can't do this. Does it seem hypocritical? Damn right, but until different rules are in place they can't do this.

Does anyone know if there is an official penalty for Kennedy?

While it may only be a 4 meet suspension based on the general rules, if the NCAA hasn’t made an official decision, he can’t wrestle until they do. Based on their ineptness and pettiness, it wouldn’t surprise me if they gave an official ruling of a four meet suspension after the season is done - and he loses an entire season due to the delay.

As others have stated, this did not begin with the NCAA. It began with the state of Iowa. Could they win a discrimination lawsuit? Maybe. But it would be against the state and would do literally nothing to help their case with NCAA.

Correct. NCAA had no choice because these were self-reported by the school. They didn't "target" the state of Iowa. Like i said before - Ferentz was an absolute idiot for railing the NCAA like its their fault.

The dudes gambled - it was a rule, they got caught. Should it be changed, to some degree. But the integrity of sports matters.

more likely the state of iowa gets sued than the ncaa. Not sure of the validity, but someone posted a tweet awhile back from the lawyer representing a couple of the ISU athletes suspended, basically saying the state used illegal means to obtain the gambling information on the athletes. If that’s true and can be proven, the state will be paying out serious $ i would have to imagine!

my understanding is the ncaa has made the decision but it just hasn’t been released due to the privacy laws. i am not privy to the information but it sounds like he will be back somewhere between isu and columbia

Illegal means? I seriously doubt it.

I must not have been following well enough before this big meeting. I'm not seeing anything different than before this reconsideration.
The NCAA removed the lifetime ban on eligibility and reduced it to one year, if you bet on on a sport the NCAA sanctions at your institution. This excludes betting on the sport you are rostered on, which still carries the penalty of permanently losing all eligibility.
Simply put, if this is your last year of eligibility, your career has ended. If it’s not your last year of eligibility you may be reinstated.
The NCAA didn’t even address the issue of being criminally charged, which shows you’re trying to hide something.

Your position is utter BS. The only reason that the NCAA investigated Iowa & Iowa State is because Iowa & Iowa State reported the violations. The only reason that Iowa & Iowa State found out about the violations is because of the criminal investigation. One of the reasons, if not the main reason for the criminal investigation was because one of the athletes used their mother's phone to place bets and their mom called the police to report her phone/account being hacked and used illegally.

Swafford and Hill are both talented, and both looked good against Cal Baptist.

Swafford is a sixth-year senior ranked #23 by WS. His best win was over then-#21 Harman from Missouri, who has never started. He also his 2 wins over then-#33 Broderson from ISU. (Haas from CB was ranked #62.) It's a long way from where he is to top-8, with a very short runway, but I'd love to see it.

Hill is ranked #55. His best win is over #63 Chesser from The Citadel. He's only a RSF, so he has more runway. But also a pretty daunting challenge.

I'm not sure a lawsuit would go anywhere because the initial investigation was about the illegal aspects (under age, false accounts, etc.) of what they and obviously many others were doing. I highly doubt it was originally about athletes in the state of Iowa, at least to start.

If the NCAA is fine with acting on information regardless of how it was obtained is it open season?

Will media, do gooders, whistleblowers, data hackers, etc. reshape the NCAA landscape? Think about it Mineo!! You could be despised by everyone. What better way to drive your brand and get eyes and clicks.

Cass done
Assad done for the year (has Covid year)
Nelson done for the year (medshirt availavlr, apparently)
Siebrecht done for the year

PK SHOULD only be suspended for a few meets.
I don't believe Abe has a covid year left

Here you go, from tonight:

Iowa coaches Terry Brands, Kirk Ferentz blast NCAA, are 'battling for logic to prevail'

Chad Leistikow
Des Moines Register
Published 9:24 pm CT Nov 8, 2023

The NCAA dropped some news Wednesday that affected athletes at the state of Iowa's two biggest universities, and it wasn't good news.

The governing body issued guidance that athletes who placed any wager on their own school (but not their own sport) would be subject to a loss of one year of eligibility, which was a reduction of the previous punishment of a lifetime ban from NCAA sports. However, indications a few weeks ago were that those athletes would be reinstated immediately.

That reversal irked some heavy-hitting coaches at the University of Iowa, who sounded off with criticism to what they felt was an outdated NCAA.

Iowa associate wrestling coach Terry Brands is calling for an overhaul to what he feels are outdated guidlines surrounding sports gambling from the NCAA. His son, Nelson, is facing a suspension that would end his Iowa career.

For Iowa football, the career effectively ended for defensive tackle Noah Shannon, who reportedly placed a single wager on an Iowa women's basketball game.

For Iowa wrestling, four senior starters were impacted by the ruling:

157-pounder Cobe Siebrecht,
174-pounder Nelson Brands,
184-pounder Abe Assad and
heavyweight Tony Cassioppi.

More: Who fills the void left by Iowa wrestling's suspended athletes?

Iowa State football and wrestling also had athletes affected.

Brands' father, Terry Brands, is Iowa wrestling's longtime associate head coach.

Here is what Brands told the Des Moines Register in a text-message statement on Wednesday night:

"Hawkeye nation and our brothers from Iowa State are battling for logic to prevail in an unprecedented, standalone struggle," Brands wrote. "Only athletes from 2 institutions in Iowa have been targeted. No other D1 institution in this country has been targeted. This is an NCAA membership committee that has a chance to modernize our NCAA and they continue not to account for a rapidly changing culture.

"The penalty for athletes who did not break any laws, did not bet on themselves, did not bet on their sport somehow is the same as for those who compromised the integrity of college athletics. Cass, Nelson, Cobe and Abe have been steadfast through this all and will remain so. We have appeals left with two of these awesome individuals and will never rest on working for an overhaul of an outdated NCAA and its leadership."

Earlier Wednesday, Iowa football coach Ferentz teed off on the NCAA during his weekly radio show, arguing that the organization has been way too slow to react to the times during the past decade. Then, via an official statement, he swung again.

“I am heartbroken for Noah (Shannon) and his family that the NCAA has come to this conclusion," Ferentz said. "Noah did not break any laws. He did not commit any crimes. And yet he is being severely over-punished by a membership committee that refuses to see perspective or use common sense. I have said many times that I think it is peculiar that the state of Iowa is uniquely the focus of this investigation. Noah is being sidelined because the NCAA is ruling on an investigation that they did not instigate, using an uneven system of justice to severely punish an excellent young man. It is just wrong.”

Note that Chad Leistikow reported in this story that the career effectively ended for defensive tackle Noah Shannon because he reportedly placed a SINGLE WAGER on an Iowa women's basketball game.

ONE FREAKIN' BET.

INSANE.

ISU had a wrestler place one $25 bet on the ISU-Iowa football game 2 years ago. The only bet he ever placed on anything. Took ISU to win and lost the bet. And his career is done.

Just ridiculous punishment.

I'm just a guy posting what I was told by sources close to the situation, I'm not banking on anything.
I do know that these apps have age verification and geo location. Obviously the state did not want to see underage people gamble with apps. I placed a few Superbowl bets on two apps and I had to go through a process to verify my age and ID. I'd guess since gambling is state regulated there are rules these apps must follow and I'll guess that verifying someone's ID is one of them.

This is not true. They did not just investigate wrestling and football. Other sports are involved as well.

It's more on the investigation end of things is my understanding where the state, or more specifically, one state employee, may have not done things the way they are required. That's where the problem lies.

Just what I was told.

So he beat a guy who once beat Owen Webster and another guy who once qualified for nationals? Damn, I had no idea. Game changer.

IIRC, one of the defense lawyers claimed that at least one DCI agent went rogue

I still think there should be full transparancy where a timeline is presented to the public; ie, what sparked the whole investigation (and what was that date), why did they target only male sports, why did they only target Iowa & Iowa State (and not UNI, Drake, etc), etc.

Sometimes I don’t even read the names of the poster as I’m reading posts, and a lot of times I can pick out the ones that you write. Idk what it is but there’s something specific that just screams “Spooner”

Betting on your own school is the big no no. You might have inside information is the thinking.
Oh, good grief. In this day of instant communication to just about anybody through countless media technologies, physically being on the same campus as another team is not going to yield any extra inside information.

If someone has a cell phone or a computer, information can do out to anybody instantly. A guy on the wrestling team isn't going to have any advantage concerning inside info from a girl basketball player on campus than that girl's friend out of state. Any inside info is one text away.

There's clear evidence that a Michigan football staffer bought tickets to games involving future opponents & filmed (or hired someone to film) the opponents' sidelines, stealing their signals. This is an NCAA violation. This was going on during the 2021, 2022 and 2023 seasons. That Michigan staffer then would stand by the Michigan defensive coordinator during games, where they'd watch the signals from the opponent's sideline, and then call the defense (they knew what was coming from the opponent's offense).

Think about over/unders and point spreads in all of these Michigan football games. When your defense knows what's coming, that has an impact on both the O/U and the point spread. We're talking about a lot of games and a lot of bets potentially impacted. And what did Noah Shannon's ONE bet on ONE women's basketball game impact?

The NCAA needs to be dismantled.

Ok, tell that to the NCAA. I don't make the rules. You know what they also have access to, have been informed about, and have been warned about? Not to do stupid stuff like bet on NCAA sports, especially their own school.

The Michigan stuff is like 2-3 weeks old. Maybe take a breather on the references as it’s a long, long way from playing out. We’re only at the beginning.
