anyone see the Kurt Warner movie yet?

Kurt Warner was the color man for the Cardinal's game last week. During the entire game I don't think he used the word "I" once. It was so enjoyable.

For reference people like Sean Hannity and Chris Collingsworth do not know how to communicate without using the words "me" and "I."

Or is Kevin Dyson wasn't tackled.

BTW, it’s currently the #1 drama at the box office (only three action movies and a musical/comedy are above it), and this story was before revised estimates put it in fourth overall instead of fifth…

Lionsgate’s American Underdog, the story of quarterback Kurt Warner, debuted to $6.2 million after two days of release. That is better than the studio’s Voyagers, The Protégé, and Chaos Walking did after five days and nearly as much as Chaos had after 10 ($6.9 million.)

As a fellow Cedar Rapids native and Hy-Vee employee (albeit only for two months), I’ll definitely check it out.

The first trailer looked awful but the subsequent ones much better.

I was told by a couple friends that it was a waste of time. Didn't really have a desire to see it before I heard that, so I definitely won't be watching it.

And as others have said, the fact they have UNI playing outside is just.......unforgivable. How could something like that get by everyone that had anything to do with the production of the movie? I don't get it.

It's called a budget.

youd have an argument if they didn't film the StL and arena football parts inside a dome. Couldn't they just film the UNI ones there too?
A lot budgeting issues also involve timing/availability etc.. This movie doesn't have a big star attached to it or the potential of getting Oscar buzz. They can turn a nice profit without risking much capital.

Took the Father in Law to it tonight. Hey there isn't much to do in Ottumwa. We enjoyed it. The Christianity wasn't over the top Tim Tebowish. Strong cast. Even the smaller roles had experienced actors. So didn't give it a Hallmark Channel feel.

Yeah, just admit you lost on this one.

A day or two of filming isn't gonna make or break a movie. Especially when you consider that is all one set up. If you do the UNI stuff out doors that another set up.

The only people who are really going to notice the lack of UNI Dome are Iowans and the handful of fans of the FCS teams who've played there. Would be really funny if they did an outdoor Iowa Barnstormers game. Did they show any Arena ball in the movie?

True but u don't spend money. You don't have to either. That way you can hire Dennis Quaid instead of Randy Quaid.

Warner’s roommate through college was Mike Hudnutt. He was a white offensive lineman. I don’t believe he played arena football, he became a DIII position coach I think.

it’s interesting to see a movie you have some knowledge of and pick up on the liberties they take with the facts to make it more Hollywood.

I also don’t think Jim Foster coaches the Barnstormers. He owned the team but didn’t coach it.

They did absolutely show important Arena Football League games in his career. They took a small liberty with Warner’s Arena Bowl loss to Tampa Bay making it nearly exactly the same as his St. Louis Rams would win over McNair (a last second completion whose stretch was just short of the end zone). In reality, they were just short on the play that got them to the one, but his last pass was actually after that on an incompletion at the goal line.

FYI, pretty good film. Just a simple, but effective (and well acted) struggle-from-rags-to-riches story. Very much about how the relationship between he and Brenda allowed each other to thrive. Rudy meets Rocky.

I get that you really can’t make a Kurt Warner movie without injecting religion into it, but I’m not interested if it’s as heavy handed and sappy as your typical Christian film.
This is my concern as well. I respect the man and his beliefs. You probably can't tell a story about him without his religion. If the story can be conveyed about the power of God for him than I'm fine with it. If the story is conveyed with the power of God then I'm out.

Was pleasantly surprised. Worth seeing if you like Kurt Warner or just inspiring, feel good movies in general. Not great, but far from bad. A little bit of a Hoosiers, Rudy vibe.
Just got home from seeing it. I would agree with your assessment. It's hard to do sports movies well, but this one was fairly decent I thought. I am not sure about every aspect of his rags to riches story, but it has to be one of the all time best stories of that kind.

It is a LONG way from UNI and the Arena League to the Super Bowl and NFL MVP. Yet he absolutely did it. Impressive.

not to mention they clearly did not film in an actual Hy Vee store as you can clearly see different private label items.

...
And here I thought you could tell it wasn't really filmed in a true Hy-Vee store because there were no armed security guards patrolling the pet food aisles. Sheesh, learn something new every day. :)

American Underdog was 4th at the box office this weekend, has a 75% Rotten Tomatoes, and has already flown past the $7 million mark on its opening weekend alone. With its advertising budget and nearly twice the screens nationwide that Lionsgate has put it on, around $15 million in box office alone is almost guaranteed at this point. May well rake in north of $50 million overall when said and done. All signs point to a much better film.

Called it. It’s a surprise hit. Definitely going to be closer to that $50 million total once it’s run ends (which will be longer now after its rise on New Year’s Day). Going to again be the #1 drama and #3 overall at the box office…

American Underdog is living up to its title, earning $4.075 million (-31%) and placing above a handful of more high-profile titles. The faith-based (but not quite faith-centric) true-life NFL drama has now grossed $15 million nine-day domestic cume. The Zachary Levi/Anna Paquin flick will pass Will Smith’s King Richard ($14.6 million) and a slew of high-profile awards season titles (almost everything released over this awards season except for West Side Story, Dune, and House of Gucci) by the end.
