That IS part of the problem.
Cael's own guys were already light years beyond Iowa's. Taylor, Retheford etc.
Tom's own guys are irrelevant thus far at the next level.. And most of them will stay totally irrelevant. Cael also went out and lured away Snyder and Dake, while having top guys already there... Iowa has Lee... Lately, it appears Tom, has been using HWC to be loyal to former Iowa Wrestlers to keep them in the room working with current Iowa wrestlers- Moody, Warner, Young etc...

And, as far as hiring assistant coaches with great wrestling resumes, was Cunningham better than Terry?

No Cunningham is not better than Terry, but Cunningham is excellent in his own right. And, Cunningham is much better than other Iowa assistants.

Was Cody drastically better than Morningstar? Was Kennedy drastically better than Telford? Were they drastically better than Schwab, Zadick, Frayer, Perry, Dennis, Eustice, etc.?

Partially answered above, but also, When Schwab was coaching at Iowa, Iowa won 3 NCAA titles in a row... Schwab and Zadick were both Olympians, and Zadick won a World silver... Zadick was coaching at Iowa during Tom's three year run of NCAAs.
So this makes my point. Those guys were replaced were marquee names and international wrestlers. They now have Bobby Telford and Morning* -- case closed but if you need more....
Frayer was not well received, was not very good, and the people in Wisconsin felt the same way about him after his stint there... Not a good hire despite a good resume. Perry may have been a 2x NCAA Champ, but there was zero international resume, and was not appealing to the top recruits with Olympic dreams, and while at Iowa for his stint as hWC coach, he was a fat and out of shape artist posing as a wrestling coach Dennis, not a bad hire at all, and maybe worth keeping.. Eustice really? Not even relevant enough to mention...
