Bruce in portal..

Been really a gadget guy since he's been here. Hopefully Kansas State can unlock his potential.
He’s been a “gadget guy” because the qb throwing to him has been awful. I’m sure Charlie jones was a “gadget guy” last year in your mind too

And that's only hurt CBB thanks to schools like Kentucky popularizing that bold strategy years ago (even if it was slightly less legal back then.......), so I don't foresee any problems whatsoever with this becoming the new norm in CFB! :D
I was thinking how this will impact CFB down the line. What if your major conference schools stop recruiting HS players except for the so called can't miss 4 and 5 star players. The other HS players get recruited by the also ran colleges. Then after they have proven themselves, the major colleges recruit them in the portal.

I think the big thing preventing that down the line is the NFL….as we have found out most of the great players that Iowa “develops” don’t stick around too long anyways before heading to the league anymore…so I don’t see someone sticking it out another year just to transfer to Bama.

The portal is a new season now.

The difference being Jones - even when at Iowa - didn't drop the ball or make the kind of mistakes Bruce made this year. I wish Bruce would have stayed but it was disappointing to see how he handled being the "main guy" this year.

He dropped a lot of passes and was a negative in the return game.
This, his play was subpar all year. He didn't do anything with the oportunites he had. He sucked in the return game. Like Tracy, I doubt we miss him.

We have literally lost our four best receivers in the past two years. And we have people on here like, “Yep I love our young guys.” 🤦‍♂️
Only way this works out if three of the top four receivers next year are not currently on the roster.
I don’t think some posters realize just how bad the WR room is. We need immediate help.

Yeah. it was his fault for being " absent " instead of the reality that he was obviously misused, under-utilized, mismanaged and coached by a completely clueless jackass of an OC. All his fault?? How are some FB fans this backwards?
I really didn't say it was "all his fault" now did I? A lot of factors contributed to his lack of production. That said....he could have made more contribution than he did...even with the "clueless jackass of an OC". Don't be so mad, max.

No. It is a sign Iowa is bringing in a new QB and many new receivers. The offense is getting a complete overhaul.
After the McNamara commit and all the rumors now…I’m thinking the same way. I’m guessing there will be some other defections of guys that need a fresh start and don’t want to start from ground zero here competing against brand new players.

I hope Iowa can successfully retool the offense. If BF can get the players and freedom to succeed it would be great. If not, time to definitely move on.

They will have to do it at the next school.

The sad thing is it does nothing to speak against the WRs we had. The QB play was subpar at best all year and our scheme is typically awful.

Brian, for all his faults, isn't a complete dummy when it comes to scheming guys open situationally. We've seen numerous occasions where we'd have guys wide open along the sidelines and Petras would either miss them by the length of the ocean, or throw it to the other team as an alternate option for completing a pass.............

However, structurally, more often than not, our WRs aren't getting open because our route trees are just too easy to defend or take to long to develop.

The other thing is you wonder what else is going on beyond just the inept offense and poor utilization and execution of our passing game that would make these guys (let's be realistic, Johnson and Bruce were our two best WRs) choose to rather transfer with plenty of eligibility left rather than stick it out in the hopes that Iowa will choose not to stay at the bottom of CFB offensively, especially with McNamara transferring in, and our next recruiting class coming in and the fact that Petras won't be back.
This. Well said Monkey.

Is this a sign there are zero changes at OC?
Highly doubtful, something will be done. Still think Brian stays, Budymar is pass game coordinator, Brian run game and maybe new OL coach or some shuffling there. Kirk also gives Brian 'full' control of offense...

They will have to do it any the next school.
True, but they also have the advantage of a clean slate there…the coaches are bringing them in specifically as an upgrade…and the bad memories of fumbles and stumbles are non existent

Hate to see a couple of guys that we wanted leave but this also means there is a great opportunity here. You just filled with a very solid QB and a young but talented OL that should get much better as a unit and one of the best 2nd string TE in the country. Now you just need to sell to some WRs and you might end up in a much better spot than people are thinking right now. Also, adding a kid from SEP would make that OL a little better as well.

Wipe the slate clean. Fresh starts for everyone after a dismal 2 years of offense. I’m more looking forward to staff changes at this point. Nobody on offense outside of Kaleb would really disappoint me by transferring at this point.
^This

Tbh, I wasn’t impressed with Bruce at all this year after a promising freshman season. He just isn’t that fast or elusive, which is what you need from a guy of his physical stature.

I wish him well, but not disappointed he’s leaving in the least.

Iowa can survive losing receivers. Not without a good qb and a good line tho, so far they’ve fixed one issue.
Can we really? Are we going to run Wick, the walk on from Deerfield and some other guy nobody knows and expect big results? That’s ridiculous.

Agreed

He is/was a solid bit player and in reality should be a 3rd or 4th WR for most P5 schools. We saw the production when he was a #1 this year. Liked his toughness but too slow for a slot guy. Iowa SHOULD be able to find a better talent to fill that spot.
