"Cade gives us our best chance out there." --Oct 22 KF Press Conf & Player Availability. Stephens & Ostrenga OUT; Castro (ankle) & Entringer IN

"Terrible decision" is pretty harsh. Especially since it's not like he sat and pondered it. It sure didn't end up as a terrible decision.

And if reviewed for that aspect it would have been judged as a forward pass, which is what he was trying to do.

I think it was a good split-second decision. He has a quick mind.

Well, enough of that topic for me.
He's coached to by no means make that throw. And is coached very firmly to not make turnovers like that. It was a big mistake

I wish we could read Lester's mind. Is Sullivan performing that badly in practice?

Remember that one play (vs Washington?) where Sulivan made a bone headed throw & we all said Brendan will never see the field again? ;)
Sully tripped over his own feet, vs Minnesota I think. Lost 6-8 yards. Not impressed.

Tried to turnover the ball vs Washington ? and only saved when his knee was down before he fumbled.

Not impressed.

I guess you guys watch all the practices and grade the players each week... Why the fug would the head coach chasing a big ten win record, NOT PLAY HIS BEST PLAYERS?

His best players at QB suck! That is the problem! He sucks at recruiting, development and evaluation of the position. It’s all on him.

He seems ok to me. 10-2 last year with the worst QB in college. He seems to struggle at QB lately. But Brad Banks, Chandler, Sherman, Ruddock, Tait, Stanzi, Stanley... Not in order, seemed to be ok. A string of tight ends were ok too.

I think you are being a bit unfair. Every coach can have a bad year. Hell Debbie has has a string of coaches with bad years.

And they are a blue blood.

“We've seen enough, I think, good things out of Cade (Petras , Deacon, etc.)to feel like he gives us our best chance out there.... I think he's done enough good things where we have confidence in he'll play well Saturday…but in reality, this whole thing goes back to adding quarterback coach to my incompetent son’s list of duties years back, which really screwed up the quarterback room. We just haven’t recruited well in this area and are terrible at identifying quarterback talent. So, it’s like I said, we just have to clean a few things up on the quarterback recruiting front. It’s certainly possible that the right quarterback in my outdated offensive system could maybe be more successful. We just feel at this time a mobile quarterback is too sexy for my offense, but maybe adding a quarterback who can scramble and make plays with his feet makes some sense down the road. For now, though, we feel comfortable with trotting out the worst quarterback in the conference and are confident he can get the job done, if we can get the defense playing better and holding up their end of complementary football, I feel pretty good about our chances to win some more games this season. We have full trust in Cade and at no point will we consider playing the backup.”

Yes, you already stated this.

That fact that he made a play close enough to be called a lateral made it a terrible decision.

Guys don't necessarily have the best control over where the ball is going when they throw it as they are being yanked to the turf. That's why you don't do it. 100%, BS should have ate that ball
What’s Cade have for an excuse for being wildly inaccurate?

Jesus H. The quarterback recruiting ADHD development has sucked. 2019 was the last decent year. 5 years or dogshit

That’s it — Petras was the last serviceable Iowa QB. I would rate him as serviceable during the second half of 2020 abbreviated season and during the first six games in 2021.

Once Petras fell apart in the Purdue game in 2021, he never played well again.

Since Purdue 2021, Iowa has had lousy QB play. Give credit to defense and special teams for Iowa having a 26-16 record during this stretch, though the record is 20-16 versus power conference teams (.556 winning percentage), and Iowa has no longer been competitive versus top 15 opponents.

Iowa has had this stretch of lousy QB play during an offensive era in college football where a playmaker at the position is key.

So while I also was around for poor QB play in the 1970s (growing up in Iowa City), the terrible play during the first half of this decade has been much more frustrating to watch, since Iowa had mostly elite defensive and special teams play from 2020-2023. Poor QB play in Kirk’s antiquated offense scheme has wasted those seasons.

Question - has he played yet? If he hasn’t, I don’t play him this weekend so they can still preserve his RS status even if he plays the remaining 4 games after tomorrow.

No real advantage at this point to burning the redshirt.
If good enough to play, you play them due to the portal and their ability to portal out if they don’t play. Add in the injury bug that can hit so next man in. In this case, the players at the position haven’t played well so find a guy that can play and get the job done. This isn’t rocket science, this is football.

To my mind, coaches have to try and treat the situation the same…I don’t think playing 5 games instead of 4 would affect whether or not he enters the portal.

Yes, Watson has played

Now do Cade…….

It never fails……Iowa can have a starting qb that makes mistake after mistake, game after game. Fans want the backup to get a chance, but there are always a few who are against it. If the backup does get a chance and makes just ONE mistake….then those few are quick to say “See, I told you the backup wasn’t any good.”

Here we have swihawk who wants to ignore the ineptitude of McNamara and declare Sullivan not being as good based on 2 alleged mistakes. Despite the fact Cade makes numerous errors every game.

Kirk isn’t infallible.

Sherman? What does he have to do with Kirk Ferentz?

“Ruddock, Tait” 😂

I don't give 2 sh*ts what Kirk says about the QB position. It's ALWAYS going to coach speak.

What matters is what they do in the games and how they are preparing the QBs.

Kirk's decisions surrounding the QB last Saturday get giant F.

He's the ONLY coach in the country that wouldn't have given Sullivan at least one series last Saturday. And spare me the "we don't want to impact Cade's confidence". His confidence was already shaken and playing like crap... He'd benefit watching a few series from the sideline.

The fact that KF says they have seen enough good things out of Cade, who is 3rd to last in the Big Ten as a QB, tells you all you need to know about the low expectations and standards he has for the QB position.
Dynamic playmakers not wanted. They are a little too "unsettling".

Interesting that Northwestern is ranked really poorly in pass defense.

Therefore, Cade SHOULD look good; however, his accuracy likely won't be any better.

Lester should decide who gives the offense the best chance to move the ball.
Iowa doesn't have the luxury of options. The problem Iowa faces offensively is that they're not able to take advantage of weaknesses in an opponent's defense because they are so one dimensional. MSU is not a great defense but leaned heavily into stopping KJ and dared Iowa to beat them through the air which Iowa has been unable to do. It leads to a lot of TFL's and very short gains. It can also lead to the occasional long run because the secondary is up on the line of scrimmage. If KJ can't pop for several long runs in a game Iowa will struggle to score. That's what last week, today and every game this season boils down to.

What’s scary is is that KF and staff “evaluate” players every week. What the hell are he and Lester watching that makes them think McNamara is any good at all. That kid should be the backup at best.

Unfortunately, I think KF still has too much veto power when it comes to the offense
