Cade McNamara News & Updates.

Again, Cade is expected to be back practicing soon. Deacon Hill is QB2. Click on "ourquadcities.com" in the tweet below to take you to the video & story.

Some excerpts from this report from Channel 4:

“The bad news is we have guys not practicing week 3 of camp, but the good news is I think everybody has a chance to start working in into this week,” Kirk Ferentz said. “We’ll know more at the end of the week but I’m really optimistic.”

How does that bode for McNamara’s chances of playing week one against Utah State?

“We’ll know more at the end of the week,” Ferentz said.

No promises that McNamara would be available week 1, but it sounds like he’ll be back out on the practice field soon. Sportsbooks currently have Iowa pegged as a 23 point favorite over Utah State. If McNamara were to miss any time, the Hawkeyes would turn to Deacon Hill to be the short term answer.

what do we know about Utah State?
A snippet I picked up.........Utah State came out of nowhere to win the conference in its first season under Blake Anderson but regression hit the Aggies hard last fall as they fell from 11 to six wins amid a rash of quarterback injuries. Cooper Legas is back at QB, but USU was hit very hard by the transfer portal and graduation. USU may take another step back before it begins to ascend toward the top of the conference again.

-----
They are a uptempo offense, and apparently a good QB and RB. I like that their strength is going against ours and we will have 8 d-lineman rotating on what looks to be a warm day coming up. Out of their conference meeting the odds have them at finishing 9th in a 12 team conference. Side note after last season they lost their D-coordinator and their O-coordinator. Head coach will call the plays. Defense gave up 405 points in 2022 in 13 games.

Nice write up

Thank you

I am going with what KF has been saying.

I always tend to believe the players more as they tend to be the ones to more likely spill the beans than a 25 year veteran of media relations head coach.

That said, I think this is a case of Cade wanting to get out there already as he feels he is fine, but the staff and medical staff want to give him more recovery time out of an abundance of caution. I think that’s what’s going on here.

We'll know in about a week.

I fully expect Cade to be ready to go in the game against Utah State.
but if not... I think Marco Lainez will see significant playing time in that game.

remember... if Cade is out... Joey is out.. then we are down to Deacon... and if Deacon goes down... it's Marco.
Do you think there is the potential of Cade suiting up as emergency only??

yea.. if he is out.. it is possible that he could dress up, but as a precaution, he sits out..
then, of course, worst case scenario... we need him in there.

hopefully it doesn't get to that... but I am of the belief that Utah State is a helluva football program... and this game very well could be tight.

Sat, Sep 4, 2021 Utah State @ Washington State 26-23

Washington State was only able to score 23 points... on their home field... against Utah State... so begs the question... does Iowa have a better offense than Washington State?

Sat, Dec 18, 2021 Utah State vs Oregon State 24-13

again, Oregon State scores only 13 points against Utah State

Yeah, I will be very surprised if we don't see Cade at QB1 on Sep 2.

Joe was supposed to be back this week. If all goes according to plan, this is what Sep 2nd will look like:

QB1: Cade McNamara
QB2: Deacon Hill
QB3: Joe Labas
QB4: Marco Lainez

Those scores are from a good Utah St team 2 years ago. Last year they weren't great and won't be again this year. If this game is tight even with Hill starting then Iowa is going to have problems all year even with Cade healthy.

good points. it just would be nice to get him some live game reps before the Clown U road game.

The lost a bunch of guys from that team then hit hard by the portal. Most are picking them about 9th in their conference and taking a bit of a step back from last season where they were 6-7.

yea... who knows, right ?
but I thought I heard they got 13 Power Five transfers coming in this season and they obviously have very good coaches... I expect a good game.

It begs no such thing. A) were not playing either of those teams, and its been reported that they've lost a ton of players from last year. B) They weren't playing Iowa's defense either

Nice story on Cade McNamara. Some fun tidbits:

He expects to be 100% by the end of spring practice in late April.

He has two years of eligibility and is non-committal about whether he would use both.

He expects to win a B1G Championship. It's not just a goal; it's an expectation.

He’s already in Phil Parker’s ear about letting Cooper DeJean dabble on offense. “An absolute freak of nature. Our first week, we all went and shot some hoops. This dude is throwing down (dunks) lightly. His head’s above the rim and I’m just like, ‘What the heck is going on?’”

He attended the men's game vs MSU and the women's game vs IU. “I was there when Caitlin hit that shot. That was one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever been in in terms of a college event. She’s an absolute beast.”
