Terrible match. Marsteller had nothing and Cooper did nothing. He is not the answer at 157.
Exactly. He should have never tried to ride in the 2nd and definitely not try to horse Marsteller. In the 3rd if he commits to leg attacks from space only with quick releases he wins. Poor match strategy against a very gassed Marsteller. I mean dude was done in the 1st period, jeeeshCooper wrestlers smarter and he wins. I have no problem with refs not giving Cooper another stall point.
I can go with that if Brands was not instructing him to do that. I don't know if that's the case though. Not my opinion but my father is blaming brands for that match he wishes brands would've coached cooper better as far as cutting him and taking him down when you see he has no gas tank
Irony of that match is that Coop was notorious for poor weight management and was known to gas himself in high school while Marsteller didn't cut weight as a prep. Fast forward to today and I doubt Coop is cutting much if anything while Marsteller is clearly struggling with the cut.
cooper should have actually tried to get away from him better to make it obvious that martsellar was doing nothing but hanging on his leg when cooper was on top of him. all he did was sit there pretty much staring at the ref expecting stalling to be called. if he makes it look like he is obviously trying to let him go martsellar more than likely would have been called for stalling again.cooper made a bad decision trying to toss him also. one of those tilts he practically put himself in that position.
He couldn't let him go. He was trying Marsteller was hanging on to him balled up on the mat. He absolutely should have been hit for stalling again or it should have been stalemated with 25 sec left. Trust me the crowd let the ref know it.Yes, this. It seemed to me he was expecting help from the referee in that position. I heard Iowa coaches yelling at Cooper to let him go pretty early on from that position...I don't think this is on the coaches. They were telling him what to do - he just wasn't doing it.
The ref let Marstaller run 30 seconds off the clock. A stall call should have been called. He couldn't let him go. He was trying Marsteller was hanging on to him balled up on the mat. And I would add that I was pleasantly surprised by Cooper today. I'm not ready to announce that he'll AA but I am saying there is a chance.Cooper wrestlers smarter and he wins. I have no problem with refs not giving Cooper another stall point.
I was more disappointed in 3 of our weights that won than Cooper. Cooper come out shooting and made some dumb mistakes but overall I saw hope. And I would add that I was pleasantly surprised by Cooper today. I'm not ready to announce that he'll AA but I am saying there is a chance.

It may be a bit premature but I actually agree. He was really bad on the mat last year against competition with a pulse and he got turned 3 times by Marsteller today. If Chance wasn't cutting too much weight, he would have tech'd him with tilts.I'm ready to see what StJ has to offer. Unless Cooper is heads and shoulders better than StJ, I'd rather give StJ an extra year in the lineup to improve. At this point I don't think we have a NQ this year at 157, and certainly not an AA. So let's build for the future with a RSF instead of a senior. That opinion may be a bit premature, but I personally think Cooper failed the test today and I'd definitely give StJ the next start and go from there.

Spot on I saw Terry going nuts hollering and using his hands at Cooper to cut him. My buddy said well Okie is holding on to his leg still no excuse at least try to break that this is on Cooper not the coaches just saying..............
I'm not nearly as pessimistic about Cooper as some of you folks. I think we're overlooking the fact that Marsteller is a supreme talent. Yes, he gassed after 1 period, and yes, his effort was pathetic, but he's still a very skilled and dangerous wrestler. Remember, coming out of high school, he was projected to be the next David Taylor at PSU.
Cooper showed me some fight, and he also showed an explosive double leg. He certainly could have wrestled a smarter match, and lack of situational awareness hurt him in this match, as he pretty much fell into a takedown and back points after trying to horse Marsteller over with a cowcatcher. Minus that brain fart, he wins this match easily.
I think he can learn from this match and have a productive season. Not saying the spot in the lineup is set in stone, but if he earns it, I think he can do some good things. I'll sure be pulling for him.
This. A reasonable and accurate assessment of the match and the situation. Cooper certainly wasn't perfect, but he wrestled much better than many of you are saying.I'm not nearly as pessimistic about Cooper as some of you folks.
