Cooper

Cooper wrestlers smarter and he wins. I have no problem with refs not giving Cooper another stall point.

I agree. Cooper is beyond terrible on the mat. He is going to get ridden to death the entire year if he is our guy. Marstellar couldn't even walk the last two periods and Cooper still couldn't get the win

It's too bad Cooper didn't recognize being on his feet was his best bet earlier. Giving up the reversal and two sets of backs was the real difference.

Exactly. He should have never tried to ride in the 2nd and definitely not try to horse Marsteller. In the 3rd if he commits to leg attacks from space only with quick releases he wins. Poor match strategy against a very gassed Marsteller. I mean dude was done in the 1st period, jeeesh

Not my opinion but my father is blaming brands for that match he wishes brands would've coached cooper better as far as cutting him and taking him down when you see he has no gas tank
I can go with that if Brands was not instructing him to do that. I don't know if that's the case though.

Irony of that match is that Coop was notorious for poor weight management and was known to gas himself in high school while Marsteller didn't cut weight as a prep. Fast forward to today and I doubt Coop is cutting much if anything while Marsteller is clearly struggling with the cut.

Cooper did not look like he had enough in the gas tank...there is just not much of an excuse for not scoring on a go-behind in that situation...I wonder if he was tired himself and hoping that the ref would call a stalemate or a stall...I think the refs did just fine there. I hope he learns from that going forward. He showed flashes on some of his shots, but boy, both wrestlers both looked pretty sloppy overall

Mars should have been hit in the last 22 seconds for just hanging on the leg.
Neither really deserved to win but Coop at least tried to wrestle.

Cooper didn't do enough to earn another stall.
Guess what bums me the most, it's not like Cooper is an inexperienced red shirt freshman. He has a lot of mat time. Either him or Brands or both hosed this up.

cooper should have actually tried to get away from him better to make it obvious that martsellar was doing nothing but hanging on his leg when cooper was on top of him. all he did was sit there pretty much staring at the ref expecting stalling to be called. if he makes it look like he is obviously trying to let him go martsellar more than likely would have been called for stalling again.cooper made a bad decision trying to toss him also. one of those tilts he practically put himself in that position.

Yes, this. It seemed to me he was expecting help from the referee in that position. I heard Iowa coaches yelling at Cooper to let him go pretty early on from that position...I don't think this is on the coaches. They were telling him what to do - he just wasn't doing it.

He couldn't let him go. He was trying Marsteller was hanging on to him balled up on the mat. He absolutely should have been hit for stalling again or it should have been stalemated with 25 sec left. Trust me the crowd let the ref know it.

probably one of the stronger 57 lbers cooper will face. it was also his 1st match so I will wait and see. coop did look bigger, legs were not as spindly.

Was it just me or did chance wrestle more like a high school kid?

Chance is a pussyy. What a way to wrestle on a large stage. He's just place a target on himself. Unbelievable the hype around this kid, he's a bust now and a bust in 2 yrs from now. He's lucky Jojo is a redshirt.

Lol. That was terrible, if the ref had any balls he would've called stalling the last 45 sec.

I liked the stalling calls except for 157 and 197. I thought Marsteller should have been DQ'd. I was blatantly obvious he was hanging on for dear life. Also thought Burak deserved a stalling call (or two) in the 3rd period.

Cooper was handed the biggest silver platter for a win I have ever witnessed.

I have NEVER seen someone ranked so gassed by the end of a first period in all the decades I've been watching. His arms were shaking in the down position they were so tired. It was unreal.

And whether it's just Cooper or the coaches also unaware one more stall call in the final minute gives a win, it was truly a knuckle dragging, mouth breathing, final minute. It was a Dumb and Dumber moment.

Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed the event and thought it was incredible! Go Hawks!!!!

The ref let Marstaller run 30 seconds off the clock. A stall call should have been called.

He should have stopped working in the third before he did when he was fighting to get his leg out. He would have had thirty plus seconds for one more takedown. Instead he like 17 seconds.

And I would add that I was pleasantly surprised by Cooper today. I'm not ready to announce that he'll AA but I am saying there is a chance.
I was more disappointed in 3 of our weights that won than Cooper. Cooper come out shooting and made some dumb mistakes but overall I saw hope.

I don't think so. I think he gets supplanted in the line-up by midlands. I did like his double though. Pretty easy to score on a guy giving less effort than someone in a drilling session.

I really hate to see wrestlers gas like that from cutting too much weight. I think that is another black eye for wrestling.

I'm ready to see what StJ has to offer. Unless Cooper is heads and shoulders better than StJ, I'd rather give StJ an extra year in the lineup to improve. At this point I don't think we have a NQ this year at 157, and certainly not an AA. So let's build for the future with a RSF instead of a senior. That opinion may be a bit premature, but I personally think Cooper failed the test today and I'd definitely give StJ the next start and go from there.

It may be a bit premature but I actually agree. He was really bad on the mat last year against competition with a pulse and he got turned 3 times by Marsteller today. If Chance wasn't cutting too much weight, he would have tech'd him with tilts.

I'd bet my favorite pair of shoes that SSJ would've won that match if he would've been ready to go today.

The book on Marstellar will be to put a crap load of pressure on him in the first period but wait it out and wait until he gasses. Disagree with Smith for throwing him out there. One of the first times I have seen the guy on bottom clinging to the guy on top who is giving him the mistake...He should have been DQ'd. Cooper should have took it to him...but that was Cooper's first match as a Hawk on a large stage...give him a break. Nice gas tank, good attitude.

It may be the first match this year for Cooper but I have yet to see anything from him at 157 that makes me feel he is any kind of AA candidate. Gas tank is lacking, very poor on mat positions, lacking explosion and urgency. Maybe he is better this year and just had nerves going in a big match but there needs to be major league improvement. No excuse not to beat a kid that gassed out. We have a lot of talent coming in around that weight range, I see no reason to sit guys who might put up more of a fight. Brody better be good at 141 because 157 is ripe for the taking. I think having Kemerer in position to go 157 would have been a good idea. Is Erickson an option? This team can't afford to leave better options out, especially if they could easily be on the bench after redshirt anyway.

Spot on I saw Terry going nuts hollering and using his hands at Cooper to cut him. My buddy said well Okie is holding on to his leg still no excuse at least try to break that this is on Cooper not the coaches just saying..............

I was shocked Cooper couldn't get away as Chance was only holding on with one arm.

It's not every day you see the top guy unable to get away from the bottom guy.

I'm not nearly as pessimistic about Cooper as some of you folks. I think we're overlooking the fact that Marsteller is a supreme talent. Yes, he gassed after 1 period, and yes, his effort was pathetic, but he's still a very skilled and dangerous wrestler. Remember, coming out of high school, he was projected to be the next David Taylor at PSU.

Cooper showed me some fight, and he also showed an explosive double leg. He certainly could have wrestled a smarter match, and lack of situational awareness hurt him in this match, as he pretty much fell into a takedown and back points after trying to horse Marsteller over with a cowcatcher. Minus that brain fart, he wins this match easily.

I think he can learn from this match and have a productive season. Not saying the spot in the lineup is set in stone, but if he earns it, I think he can do some good things. I'll sure be pulling for him.

This. A reasonable and accurate assessment of the match and the situation. Cooper certainly wasn't perfect, but he wrestled much better than many of you are saying.
