Day 1 of recruiting for Anthony Knox

You guys are being pretty harsh on @SPOONER . From what I understand, the family has made it known they aren’t interested in the Hawkeyes, don’t have an interest in being recruited by us, and will be staying in the northeast. But that’s just what I heard through the grapevine.

No. That’s the mentality of someone who understands planning and focus. He was barely even worth the call they made. I’d have advocated they not bother to call at all.
Are you really saying this top 10 pfp kid is not worth 10 minutes of TnTs time on the off chance all the other stuff (rumors he doesn’t like Iowa) is not true. A 10 minute phone call?!?!? there’s your problem if leadership thinks the same …

Spoons, generally has a pretty good take & is level headed right up until the point you disagree with him. Then there is no end in sight to the back and forth banter thereafter. My recommendation is agree to disagree with the him & move on. The sky is in fact pink and the mountain tops blue.

bragging about being a good salesman is not a virtue, people in sales are lying pos

Pot meet kettle.

They did.

And guess what? It isn’t like that’s the first time they had any sort of contact with the kid.

Spoons is a totally different poster. Puff…puff…pass.
You are really doubling down on the recruiting violations? Holy wow!

Explain, please.

I wouldn’t do it off a rumor. I’d have already talked to his HS coaches, club coaches, the kid himself, etc.

If you’re doing it right, you already know. And if you don’t already know, you’re still in the starting blocks when the race is already underway.

And I sure as heck hope leadership thinks the same.

Tom or terry should of called all top 10 p4p right away. I cant imagine to busy could be an excuse…..come on….a college wrestling coach in the off season! All there is is time!
But the real question is whether at midnight you have to call them in the order of their p4p rankings, and if so, using whose rankings. And how many minutes per call? What if their phone is busy - move to next guy and come back? Or can they do a group call at midnight with a recorded message saying "we want you". Kids are demanding and finicky these days, recruiting is a bitch.

P.S. I'm pissed as hell if someone calls me at midnight.

Throw professions out the window. My thoughts are Knox is a highly ranked & credentialed wrestler at a projected need weight. Iowa has two of the best light weight coaches in the game. One of them needs to be on the horn at midnight calling him. To say not to because of some tweets is very short sighted. The Flo coverage makes it pretty obvious to me. How many recruits have flipped throughout the years? How many Yanni D's have worn Tigerhawks on their headgears as kids? How much time, energy & effort is taken in a phone call?
Midnight calls to a kid who has 2 years of HS remaining aren't a must. Only 1 out of 79 called him at midnight.

What if their phone is busy?

Lol. Good thing aol wasn’t busy when you dialed in with your 14.4 modem to post that.

I don’t think you have to call at midnight. Obviously. Most didn’t. But if you would have, it obviously would have meant something to this recruit.

But no one is choosing Iowa over Penn State or Cornell or even Ohio State or Rutgers because Bobby Telford called. Even if you think you’ve somehow figured out you have no chance with a top recruit (before even being allowed to talk to him), if you’re making any call at all it has to come from Tom or Terry. Not doing so already caused an unnecessary embarrassment.

Are you for real? Or are you a parody account?

I’m surprised you can access the internet. Good thing aol wasn’t busy when you dialed in with your 14.4 modem to post that.
Was hoping my post would have self-answered your question.

P.S. I am now an IT specialist, former salesman, with AOL. I know what I'm doing and talking about.

Nobody should be choosing a college over the coach who makes the 1st contact. If that's what determines the school then the support staff around that athlete isn't doing its job. Most staffs get a list together and divide it up amongst themselves and all make calls

Got it.

How often do you get busy signals these days?

Interesting, b/c that’s not what the video showed. Maybe that’s true for non top recruits, but if you’re serious about a top recruit, I have to think your initial actions speak to that.

Of the top schools that we witnessed in the video, only Iowa didn’t use the head coach. So if you’re Anthony Knox and you got calls from Mike Grey and Cael Sanderson, etc., but Iowa (and only Iowa) had their volunteer assistant make initial contact, what would you think about their level of interest?

The level of interest today is shown by NIL fyi

My meaningless 2 cents based on history is that the approach that TnT and company have used for recruiting has not been especially effective after factoring in results. I feel they have struggled at times to identify and obtain the kind of talent that is needed to get the job done. Ignoring people who actually liked Iowa who then went on to do well elsewhere has been a problem too often. Repeatedly targeting the classic slow footed grinder type has been a big issue. Recruiting too often seems passive and unorganized. If they want the big fish then trying to catch them is better than hoping they happen to jump in the boat because your boat won a lot of races years ago.

This kid was sitting by the phone at midnight waiting for those calls. We’re so far behind in recruiting that it is embarrassing, imo.

Recruits and parents have made this midnight call thing something. And now the media . Most coaches hate it they're in bed so they can get up at 5am and be in the room for a lift or a run. Plus now with NIL that midnight call means nothing. Most programs and coaches who will continue to make the midnight call a priority will be the programs who can't compete in the NIL game. If you call a kid at midnight now NIL comes around and you offer 20k year and others offer 100k and they didn't call who do you now think the athlete believes wants him more

Do you think the staff and the collective discuss the value of the athlete? Or do you think the collective decides all of that ?
I know the coach that successfully recruited my kid was not allowed to discuss anything NIL related. My kid did get some small NIL stuff for camps and personal training.

The coaches words regarding money were, " 50% Fasa, 35% academic, the rest athletic budget would take care of. You can earn extra money by working our camps. NIL monies is all up to you. I can not discuss it"

The team won a D1 title 2 seasons ago and was 2nd last year.

I understand all of that . My point is the coaches are talking with the NIL collectives about the athletes and how much they're worth. The collectives aren't making up #s on their own . I get all the PC talk

Most coaches hate it. But it’s only one night a year, right? And in this new day and age of portal hopping, we should be planting positive vibes for IC with all top recruits no matter their perceived interest in our program at present.

That stuff is way beyond my pay grade.🙂

The sport my kid plays is even more of a niche sport than wrestling. I'm just grateful that we won't be 200k in debt after 5 years at NU. Go cats!!!

I would hope the coaches are doing everything in their power to close the gap with PSU. If that means staying up until 1am one night a year to make some phone calls, so be it.

I get why the coaches wouldn’t like it but if it helps you get a leg up on a top guy, why not? Not doing it simply because you don’t want to, when it’s obviously important to the recruit, just seems lazy and arrogant.

We heard the same story with Rocco Welsh. Just play the game and make the f’n call.

They may not lie it, but the world isn’t designed around their desires. As my dad used to say, “That’s why it’s called work.”
