DeVries of Drake is the replacement if Fran is done

Fran has had an ok run,but there is no longer any fan enthusiasm and attendance is in a rut. I doubt that Beth will let this continue much longer. Hiring a new coach would energize the fan base. Look at how many coaches ISU has gone thru just during Frans time here.
Iowa has to have a job available before they can offer a job to someone. There hasn’t been an opening for a men’s BB coach at UIowa for 15 years or so. Maybe the next time there is an opening, DeVries might inquire. Both the FB and men’s BB coaches are retirement age and won’t be coaching too many more years.
DeVries would be a “Ralph Miller” level hire for UIowa. And Miller is the best BB coach the Hawks ever brought in from somewhere else. (Not even close.)

Lute Olson?

I agree. Ralph Miller was an absolute gem of a coach. Just one of those incredible basketball minds.

Drakes current coach Ben McCollum is clearly an up and comer. Maybe he’s next in Iowa City. I thought I read something about him being from NW Iowa originally. I watched about 5 Drake games this year and have been impressed with the way his team plays. Probably should be ranked honestly.

I'd consider that

I had to read up on miller a bit, he had his teams averaging 100 points in some seasons without the three point line. Why did he end up leaving the Iowa?
Evy lied to him. Evy promised Ralph a new arena if he won the B10….In 67-68 Ralph tied tOSU fir the title and Evy “remodeled” the old Field House. Repairs took longer than promised and the Iowa team of 68-69 never “got into shape” and jelled as hoped. (Remodel forced practices be shorter and pre-season workouts were done in an unheated FH)… 1969-70 the same team returned plus Fred Brown, and after a slow start, the Hawks went in a roll about Christmas time.
UIowa won the B10 that season, and Oregon State came calling with a brand new field house and great golf…Ralph couldn’t resist. Ralph was a lot like Evy. He felt Evy lied to him so he left when given an opportunity.

The Beavers have his name on their floor today I believe, right? So sad we've had some amazing coaches here. Fball coach in the 1920s who left Iowa and made USC, USC. Name is escaping me.

Miller’s 1970 team is the best Hawk men’s team ever in my opinion. John Johnson and Fred Brown spent years in the NBA. Calabria and Vidnovic, Jensen and McGilmer. Ralph’s 6 pack. Lost to Artis Gilmore’s team on a last second tip in. Prevented us facing UCLA in the final. My guess is Iowa wins that if it had happened.

Yes, Johnson was sick for that game or it wouldn't have been close. John Wooden said that Iowa was the one team they feared that year.

Born in IC I believe. Raised in Storm Lake.

Drake had a little lapse after the holiday break but they’re solid. Stirtz would walk in to Iowa and be our best player right now.

Yep he loves Iowa. May still be possible but much more difficult than a year ago.
Is it easier to win at WVU or Iowa? If Iowa is a job he wants, I would say being somewhere for a year would not be a huge issue if the job was to open up. There may be some really good jobs that open up at the end of the season. I could see North Carolina, Texas, Georgia Tech, with the right person could be a good job, Virginia will probably be open as well.

Just much more difficult financially now the biggest hurdle.

Lute was an “unknown” coming to Iowa from Long Beach…
Miller had been coaching in the best VB conference in America (the Mo Valley) fir several years and even win that conference once or twice at Wichita…Ralph was a coach of national renown when he came to Iowa.
When Iowa hired Ralph, college basketball took note….No more bounce passes at UIowa! Ralph introduced the “revolving door” to the Iowa bench…break a “Ralph rule” on the court and you were going to talk with him about it immediately. He was a piece of work.

Ralph was great, but Lute was very close.
