Devries Rumors Getting Louder

If you put an undersized PG on the floor in a power league, you are handicapping yourself from the jump. If he's a clutch shooter or cat quick or a lock down defender, or a wizard in ball screens or good at getting to the rim .or shot creation ...or very high IQ...
Or something ....anything....you can be ok.

Which of those compensating factors does Harding bring?

Exactly.

100%. Fran usually starts 3-4 guys that are defensive minuses....you might be able to cover for a single weak defender, but when you have 3 or 4 of then out there at one time, no way. Harding as soon as you put him on the court is the smallest guy, big problem on switches, needs help when he gets backed down in paint. He doesn't bring enough to the table on offense to make up for being a defensive liability.

Probably drunk while posting.

I have a white Cousin who was All American and would house nearly every Player currently in the B1G if not all , Frans problem is getting bad white Players in mass, Just because a Player has a certain skin color does not make Him automatically worse or better , the pool of elite white Players is smaller but they are out there , Your racial stick is old and as bad and as incorrect as the spelling of Your handle , there are no TH in Old Norse it is a P , so Thor is actually Por . . In Newer Scandinavian dialects Th became a D so anglicized Lodbruk is the correct translation Free lesson .
Of course skin color doesn't make one a better basketball player. It just happens to be blacks are better at basketball than other races and it's not even close.

Basketball is an easy pickup game in the streets. Golf, tennis, hockey, etc aren't. Inner city kids (more blacks than whites) do pick up games.

Yes, but it’s also about roster construction to an extent.

No amount of coaching will give the Sandforts the lateral quickness required to guard athletic wings. Coaching won’t add 3 inches to Brock or Freeman’s height.

It’s just really hard to play defense with a bunch of guys who are slow, undersized, or both. It’s about getting the right guys in as well as coaching them up.
So if Fran is back Iowa will have a majority black roster next year for the first time since the late 80s.

Why do we want him gone then?

You all want DeVries.

Well, he's gonna have to want Iowa.

Chad is a long time beat writer for the Des Moines Register, of course.

The problem with this framing is that it assumes the nil issue is completely independent of Fran and out of his control and that's just not the case. He's a bad/disinterested fundraiser who doesn't click personally with a lot of people and he has very strict strict ideas on how he wants the NIL money allocated that makes it harder to operate in the current climate. Iowa isn't going to be Indiana or anything like that but if you got a big name native son like DeVries in there the money situation would improve dramatically.

There's so much hate for Harding out there, there's nothing that can be said to change the narrative. Harding was not brought to Iowa because he was a 5 star player, He has qualities that every true point guard has except height and because Fran recruits players that need time to develop. By next year Harding will be a much better player, but this is now a different college basketball world then it was a few years ago.
Coaches like Fran are a dyeing breed, development coaches are being left behind and are frustrated with the system that is in place with NIL, the portal, and instant transfer eligibility. It's clear Fran can't handle it. That's why you're seeing some great coaches leaving the profession.
Fans now what instant gratification, something Fran cannot or can ever deliver to Iowa's fan base and with all the injuries that has beset the program this year it has reduced Iowa's chances to even be competitive.
Fran is not going to change and become a portal genus, He relies on recruiting high school players and development, so if Iowa fans want Iowa to ever become relevant again you better hope that the existing roster develops at a faster rate, or Fran is bought out and Iowa hires a coach that embraces the portal, NIL, and instant transfers.
Fran has been in the business of coaching for a long time, he knows the game, but he's now a stubborn old man that refuses to change his recruiting and coaching style, He tries to fit a square peg into a round hole and it's not working.
If he refuses to retire, then Beth has to do the right thing, fire him and make a new hire if Iowa men's basketball is to rise again to respectability. JMO.
Can you repeat that?

I didn’t say anything about race in my post.

Just because the new recruits are black doesn’t mean they are physically ideal basketball players. That’s caveman logic. We have had plenty of black players who were undersized (Bowen, Toussaint) or just not very athletic (Dembele, Ogundele).

Dembele is basically a traffic cone on defense. There is a HUGE difference athletically between him and Traore.

So, maybe the new crop of recruits are going to be better defensively. But it’s asinine to say that, because they’re black, they will be good defensively

If you guys want to see what Fran ball with a bunch of athletic black guys would look like just watch Rutgers.

Hint... it's still just lots of scoring and bad defense.

There's a reason you see Tom Izzo constantly chewing his players out about defensive mistakes. It's because you have to fvcking coach to get results.
Exactly right. It’s not going to matter with Fran.

Well my apologies to you sir. I made the mistake of lumping you in with the "black = defense" crowd.

I agree with your points.

My point is it's largely irrelevant with Fran because any group of players he has will still be immersed in a culture of indifference to defense and it's virtually impossible for a team to be connected defensively in that environment.

Real iffy

Uh, no. Perhaps this year they been good offensively and not very good defensively but Rutgers has been really solid defensively these past few years. During that same time, they struggled offensively.
Its not real hard to understand that I was referring to this year.

No way Beth can afford to let fan apathy to grow to Lick-level years by bringing him back.

Fran will be done at the end of the year … you don’t give him one more season … to show he is still - and always will be - an average coach (.510 conference record) …
She needs to put her stamp on the program, running BIF out of town was a tap in. She has some work to do.
