We got the first public glimpse of his mysterious new wife today as the Dodgers prepared to fly to Seoul. Her name is Mamiko Tanaka and she’s a former basketball player for the Fujitsu Red Wave.

Indeed, she better have a good prenup:

"Under the terms of his unique deal, Ohtani will only be paid $2m per year for the first 10 years, then $68m per year 2034-2044."

Presumably structured that way so he can avoid paying California's high personal income taxes.

Must have had a good attorney or agent

California's already said the $680m he will be paid (presumably) after he retires/leaves the state/country will still be subject to the tax, as it was earned while he was a resident/employee of the Dodgers. Doesn’t matter where he flees to, California will require the franchise to fork over the taxes before paying him.

Good luck with that California

Tall, athletic women so often tell more about how big/strong/athletic a kid will be than the dad. Their kids have really high odds of being athletic freak shows.

Why pick them apart like a group of gossipy housewives.

They look happy. Ohtani really comes across as a great individual off the field.

Good for them.

You think Japan's are lower than California?

Full disclosure, I have no idea what Japan's tax rates are it's just most other industrialized countries have higher tax rates than the US.

Also, I can't get past the part where there's a women's professional team with the nickname "Red Wave".
