Does Iowa go after one or 2 QB’s in the portal this next season?

Perhaps not. But the last 5 years have been and that's what today's QB recruits see as IOWA football
I agree the QB position since Nate left has been shite. Whatever tiny numbers of downs Stanley played as a freshmen turned out to be a waste. The 2020 team might have made the playoffs with Stanley. Two close losses to inferior competition because of poor quarterbacking, Even the NCAA would have to taken an undefeated Big Ten team.

It's not just Iowa. It's way more of a crap shoot, for every Rocco Becht there are 3 JJ Kohl types. I bet only 1 of the OSU qbs on their roster will succeed after next year 2, 5* in Sayin, Noland, and 2 high 4* in Keinholz and Brown. Hell even last year, McCord was a high 4*/5* recruit.
For ISU fans: What will JJ Kohl do? Will he sit for two more years?

Iowa has been using the current NFL model of not developing QBs for decades now.

Why would they change as long as Kirk is there?

P.S. learning a playbook and developing skills are two different things
any solid coaches in the portal? (sarcasm) If OSU loses to Penn State today, look for them to start courting Matt Campbell. May as well start the rumors now.

I think you're mostly right, but they did take two this year and it would have to work along similar lines. One guy to compete with Sully immediately and a second guy in a similar position to Stratton - FR or RS-FR who wants a change of scenery.
Yes, the QB from Colorado State who's head coach (Norvell) was a former Hawkeye. Very unusual.

We have been thin at QB for 6 years. What evidence do you have that anyone on the roster
Or currently committed will perform at the position
Big Deac was anything but thin....

Well if Matt Campbell is ever going to leave ISU, this would be the year. His stock has gotta be as high as it's ever been. A chance to go undefeated and make the CFP. If he wants a big payday, the time is now.

I wouldn’t think more than 1. What would be the point? Newsflash: if you’re playing your 4th team QB you aren’t going to win many games. Iowa is not a developmental program for QBs. If someone is transferring in they should already be a starter from somewhere.

We are paper thin… do we go after another qb as a backup for Sully this coming season? I think Sully has one year remaining? I think going after at least one would be highly beneficial…
I thought Sully had 3 years left when he transferred in? Need to get a young QB with experience from the portal next year.

How much longer is the band-aid strategy going to be the norm? How about recruiting some QB talent out of high school and coaching them into solid QBs. Next year will be the third year running that the QB will be a player not initially recruited into the program. Something is wrong.
Not much longer Just 5 years; at the most!!!!

One for sure … maybe two… Not sure if Marco L will ever get a sniff as the starter … Can’t go into next season with the mindset thinking Sullivan is/will be the answer. We sure as hell better start recruiting and developing QBs because our track record of recruiting/developing QBs is atrocious. And I know that ties back to BF … so Tim L better show his stuff moving forward ….

Some of those guys were decently rated. I think it comes down to the system that is run here. Hopefully Lester can be better at teaching and developing good qb's. Kirk needs to let go.

+shows how poor our development is (you may have implied as an outcome of our “system”)

I agree that surprisingly we can recruit decent QB’s on paper (Wiegers and Petras were 4 stars) but rarely do they develop.

This guy is the current third string QB at aTm, he started a few games last year due to injuries. He could do wonders for us.

We don't know what Lainez can do. If Sully can play well as a full time starter, and there is really no reason to think he can't, we have the position covered for two seasons.

Hopefully Kirk learns to stay the hell out of QB recruiting and let Lester handle it. Fans can see the better QB than Kirk can. Repeatedly. Without being at practice.

That's what TL is here to do, recruit QBs to run his offense. TL will hopefully show us what recruiting Offense looks like.

I think a lot of Iowa's approach to the QB portal will be decided by how good they feel about Lainez and how good Lainez feel about staying at Iowa , I do expect Lil Fitz to eventually earn a Schollie, That Kids tape is good and He is a 3 star PWO
Has anyone heard if Jimmy Sullivan is enrolling at semester or next summer? That might play a factor as well.

I do expect a qb addition regardless, with resar changing positions and Cade graduating. Would like one for depth if nothing else.

I’d also add the caveat of waiting to see who wins actually in the portal. Everyone was clamoring for a big name prior to spring ball, but that never happened. First because of the OC job search taking longer than we expected, but also because the transfer QB market simply wasn’t what most expected it to be.

Ty Thompson seemed like that big name, and hindsight is 20/20, but bro seems like a bust given that he's not even starting at Tulane.

Barring injury. Running your QB1 comes with risks.

So without any defections next year would look like:
Senior: Sully
Junior: Stratton
Soph: Marco
Tr. Fr: Sully2.0, Lil Fitz PWO

Seems like numbers wise that is a good room, obviously if the scholarship situation allows and there talent is out there, bring in someone to compete. Remember Sully2.0 committed before Lester was hired so Lester may still want to find someone he deems a great fit.
Yeah that’s a complete dog**** room unless Jimmy Sullivan can come in and be serious player and be #2 as TFr. They need someone to come in and compete with Sullivan. No way he’s the guy they choose to 100% commit to being the starter next year.

I predict he will make that clear. The NW boards and tweets were pissed they picked the wrong guy.

Sully is absolutely the starter next year.

Sully is absolutely the starter next year.
Most likely I agree; but we will again need an additional body for depth if nothing else. Would also like to see Sullivan have to earn it officially.

Nothing against him; just burned by Cade previously being effectively anointed as the starter and never truly earning it.

Cade Truly earned it in practice. Like all starters do.
