Personally, my focus is on Iowa but I have to admit, it's not a good look that we have Penn State (Jerry Sandusky), Minnesota (10 player gang rape), Michigan State (Nassar; multiple football player and basketball player sexually assaults with Dantonio and Izzo being untouchable), Ohio State (wrestling sexual assault scandal; Zach Smith domestic violence), and Maryland (player death from heat stroke; ESPN documenting its toxic culture) recently or currently embarrassing the conference.

Oh I didn't read the article. I'm confused as to why you started the thread. Kinda dumb.
the Minneapolis Star Tribune is a major newspaper and this story was published today. To the author, the scandals across the B1G have lessened his enthusiasm as the season opener approaches.

There has been corruption and lack of control in college athletics forever. The PSU thing was a different level for sure. The people involoved have been dealt with. It is yet to be proven how much Dantonio or Izzo knew about Nassar. They are both slimebags regardless of any complicity they may have had in that saga. It is kind of like an ethnic restaurant: if you really knew what you were eating, there is a good chance you would look for something else. I am proud to have had KF representing Iowa for 20 years. There have been moments and episodes during that time. They have been dealt with for the most part. I still don't understand why DJK was allowed to stay on the team as long as he was. And honestly, I am concerned about the culture and mentality of this team going into the season. There seem to be a number of individuals who have their own agenda. I hope this is not another 2010-type season where talent and potential got pissed away by guys who had their own thing going on.

It's a rational question, OP, and yes, it has diminished my enthusiasm somewhat, especially since Iowa has to deal with four player suspensions itself. We look to sports to give us a break from reality, but sports is often a reflection of that reality rather than a respite from it. Such is the case as this football season is about to begin.

It's true that human nature has not changed and never will. It's true that scandal has been a part of college sports since they were invented, but those facts don't make the disappointment disappear when major transgressions occur like the ones in the Big Ten now.

So yes, the turmoil has put a damper on the season for me, but I hope that a great season awaits in Iowa City, one that will help us Hawkeye fans enjoy the positive diversion sports should provide.

What dampens the season for me is that a number of the schools are looking to find anything they can to make these issues appear acceptable and thus this behavior is becoming part of their culture.

People make mistakes and no one is perfect. That said, we'd hope they learn from those mistakes and experience the consequenses of their actions. Most of the schools are doing everything they can to find a way condone it, cover it up, and continue business as usual. That sickens me. Schools that do nothing should experience a full house cleaning from the president on down.

But for the grace of God go IOWA

First, no does not damper at all. Second, every program has skeletons in the closet. It is just a question of how bad and when/if it surfaces. Third, and This may sound counter-intuitive, but I actually believe as time goes on with the speed of info and continued technology, these "stories" will actually have less of an affect on sports and people watching. For starters, we are getting to the point where there are really no "shockers" anymore. And the stories are so plentiful, each one seems to lose importance in terms of coverage. I mean I rarely think of what happened at MSU and OSU wrestling anymore and 10 years ago those would be year long stories. PSU will never go away cause of the nature of it but now what used to be front page stories for weeks, (OWI's, Grade issues, Public Intox, running from cops, fighting, etc.) are non-events because in part with technology these stories are always breaking and there is always a new one to divert attention. It now takes a death, sex assault on kids or rape to really get any extended coverage. And nobody seems to care if it breaks during season unless it affects who is playing on the field. I mean outside of Iowa City and Ames (CF of course has more posts on Iowa suspensions than anything ISU football related) nobody gives a crap about what happened in IC with suspensions and transfers recently and 10 years ago it would be viewed as a "rogue" program but now these stories break daily everywhere. My 2 cents.
