Drake Ayala?

I don’t know about that. The whole starting lineup is from out of state. Also think Ybarra is gonna be a stud.
It is easier to recruit inside state lines instead of going into enemy territory for elite talent. So when your school doesn't have the in state HS talent of Ohio or Pennsylvania, you have to convert

I agree. Going out there seems cool at first but for a small town Iowa kid its a big change.

I dont think Teske has the talent many had hoped for but I had heard he liked the campus but never really adjusted to how east coast folks are. Iowa nice is a thing. That and sounds like a girl really did a number on him.

Dont get me wrong, I think Columbus is a huge change from Iowa. Its a huge city. I hope he weighs that pretty hard.

But to argue against myself Tom Ryan is a good guy regardless of how hard a time we want to give him. He really is. Plus fellow Iowan Nick Oldham is out there so if he is liking it then that likely plays a factor with Drake.

If we don't get Ayala, that's a huge problem. Can't let an out of state school take your elite in state talent and expect to compete for titles long term

I also think it would be a bit of a problem not to land Ayala. If we don’t get Ayala, do people start comparing that to PSU not getting Lee? Obviously Iowa had something big that PSU couldn’t offer, that being the turnout of the best lightweights in the country, especially on the senior level. Spencer has also said a few times that growing up watching Iowa and liking ”Iowa-style” has played a role, too.

I know that Lee is a generational talent, but you have to assume Ayala also has aspirations of being a 4 timer (doesn’t every college wrestler?) as well as a desire to rep the US on the big stages. For the most part, people throughout the country know that the Iowa room especially excels at developing the lightweight talent. It seems like the logical place for Ayala to go.

The biggest wrench that I can see (outside of the money that everyone keeps mentioning) is Ybarra. Is that enough for us to lose the highest ranked recruit prospect from our state in the last decade?

Go easy on me and take all of this with a grain of salt. I’m only considering losing him to Ohio St based off of other possible insight mentioned in this board. If he has Ivy League dreams and has the test scores to go along with his grades, then I’d be really happy for him. I think that presents a completely different dragon than the PSU vs Iowa recruiting process for Lee.

I personally could see Ybarra being a problem. With Cullen and Ybarra both coming in. Ybarra is gonna be a 25lber.
Yup. YBarra will probably start off at 125...I don’t know how much bigger he’ll get. He committed to Iowa awhile back and has never wavered. Right now, I would think the priority is 149,157.
werent rby and Ybarra teammates? He has the same potential as rby. And is still raw from matches that I have watched.

I'd be interested in seeing the list of Iowa kids that made All American status leaving the state.

This is not a knock on Ayala because I like his style and his attack rate but its not really close. Ayala will need a year to get bigger unless he hits a growth spurt. Just depends on how much value Iowa is going to put into the first weight.

Yes...but they are different wrestlers. Both are hungry but I would argue that RBY is better athletically. Jesse is going to be very tough to score on and always seems to be in good position. RBY gets out of tough situations because of his quickness, Jesse doesn't really get into tough situations unless it benefits him.

Both RBY and Jesse come from a strong program but do not have the wealth of good, D-1 caliber wrestling partners to train with like a lot of these guys do. Thats why you are seeing a leap with RBY and will probably see the same with Jesse.

That's awesome, thanks! Can you make a list of Iowa kids staying in state making All American in the same time era?

Spencer Lee was the overall prize of his class IMO, but that class included Yianni, Fix, and Nick Lee in the Top 5. Pretty good. Seems like if you get a couple 2-3 of those every year you'll have a pretty good team...........

Don't think Ayala fits that bill, but pretty accomplished kid. Iowa has Schreiver if he ever gets healthy again, and Ybarra in those first couple weights already. Ayala is going to be rated higher than both Nationally at the end I believe (?). But Teams with scholarship limits have to fill other spots.

I don't know anything about the Ayala Family, if they are Hawkeye Fans or not, but IMO if it's not about money or Ivy League it's a no-brainer to come to Iowa and compete for a spot (since Spencer won't be in the way).

Nice but tells a lot. See blank st. With what Iowa is doing says a lot.

Imo Ybarra has more upside then Ayala. I’m might get hate for that but watching both wrestle that’s what I see.

FWIW I've been told by a person in the know in Dirty Dodge that its now down to Iowa and Ohio St and that he favors Ohio St 60-40.

We shall see.

IMO the kids the real deal. McDonough part II

I hope he is smart enough to not fall for Ryan's ass kiss BS. I thought it was a bad career move for Teske to go to PSU and I feel the same in this situation. It is a tough road being a D1 wrestler no matter where you go, at Iowa he has a team family to help him out and real family close at hand plus will be a a fan favorite not to mention the best of the best to help him advance. The smoke Ryan blows up his ass is not going to be much good when he is sitting in ohio hating life surrounded by a bunch of tools.

Honestly, why would he even consider any place but IOWA? Unless there was a significant money discrepancy which I can not imagine. How would any other place even compete at all?

1) You are from Iowa
2) There is NO question where the mecca of Wrestling is!
3) Partners and greatest ability to reach the top and it is not even close!
4) Not sure how long it will take? But the New facility is in the works.

So unless someone else is offering women, cars, and cash like the old days of SMU Football and the likes. What am I missing?
Don’t forget the sec in that list with SMU

Iowa wins the National title and it will do alot for recruiting. New facility adds more bonus.
Seam's the same conversation was about Teske 2 years ago (actually it's about every year) that hes a must get.
Actually hope he comes but we seriously need to get the Pennsylvania pipeline going some more kids from out east.

You are a Nerd.......damn good one too! ;)

If I were Tom Ryan I'd be telling Ayala that he'll be a four-year starter at Ohio State, that he needs to leave the safety of his home state to achieve his dreams, that Ryan knows both Iowa and Ohio State and Ohio State is the place where Ayala will succeed, and that Iowa already has two guys at 125 and do you really want to go into a situation where the coach doesn't have a clear path and plan for you?

If I were Tom Brands I'd be telling Ayala: YOU are the guy we've chosen to carry on the legacy of Spencer Lee at 125 and help KEEP the NCAA title in Iowa City. You are Iowa born and bred (like Tom, Terry, Morningstar, and Gable)--imagine the ovations you're going to get at CHA at the lead-off guy. You'll get polite applause from Ohio State fans, first because they can't pack a house, and second because you'll never be embraced as a hometown boy. You'll be a 4-year starter and 4-time champ at 125 (with a 1-2 punch of Ayala-Ybarra at 125-133, and possibly Ayala-Ybarra-Schriever at 125-133-141). And as for Tom Ryan, ask him what posters were in his bedroom when he was growing up. I can guarantee you they weren't Ohio State. You could also ask him if there's any other program he'd rather be coaching at--if you trust him to give you an honest answer.

(Oh, yeah--and when Tom Ryan left his home state to achieve his dreams, where did he go again? I can't remember.)
